Vaginismus is a condition where the muscles around the vagina contract and tighten, making penetration very painful or impossible. This condition can affect not only sexual intercourse, but also medical examinations and tampon insertion.
Vaginismus occurs when the vagina is unable to relax, causing the muscles to spasm. This is a reflex response, similar to when we automatically flinch if an object comes too close to our eye.
Vaginismus affects many women to differing degrees. With some women, vaginismus prevents any attempt at successful intercourse. With others, it may occur later in life, after having enjoyed many years of pain free intercourse.
Once experienced, sufferers often find themselves trapped in a vicious cycle. The vaginal muscles tighten due to an expectation of pain. The experience of pain then reinforces the fear that it will happen again. And so the pattern repeats itself…
How can you manage vaginismus?
The simple answer is, not very well. Vaginismus is involuntary. Trying to stop it happening is like trying to stop blinking. You can try, but the unthinking, subconscious part of the mind will override your attempts and that physiological response will take over automatically once again. Some people will try distraction or relaxation techniques. Some attempt to avoid certain “triggers” to prevent the problem occurring. Others may use direct hypnosis suggestion to correct the learned response to pain. But unfortunately, none of these methods resolve what caused it in the first place, and so eventually the problem will just keep coming back, and the anticipation will never go away.
Why, Why, Why?
The most effective way to treat vaginismus completely and permanently, is to resolve what’s causing it; if there is no longer any cause, there can be no effect.
So why do you suffer from vaginismus? You have probably puzzled over this many times before. Looked for reasons, triggers behind it. Perhaps you know why; an early sexual experience was painful or unsatisfactory. Perhaps you’ve experienced sexual abuse in the past. Maybe previous sexual experiences have caused you embarrassment, or feelings of inadequacy. But knowing this doesn’t make the problem go away. Or maybe you can’t think of any reasons to explain it. But that doesn’t mean there is no cause, because for something to exist it has to have been created. It has to come from somewhere.
Beneath all the triggers and confirmation there is a single, root cause stored away in the subconscious mind. It’s something you can’t think of. Something small, easily forgotten, easily overlooked. It’s like that bit of grit in your eye. Once you find it, it can be hard to believe that something so small could have caused so much trouble.
It can take years for our problems, conditions and symptoms to get a good hold over us. Something that starts out as a minor irritation gets worse and worse until it causes us so much suffering that we eventually seek help to put it right.
How can hypnosis treat vaginismus?
Lesserian™ curative hypnotherapy is distinguished from all other forms of hypnotherapy primarily by its use of logic. The therapist approaches each person without theories or preconceptions – except for one – that the answer to your sexual problem lies only within your subconscious mind. With Lesserian™ curative hypnotherapy there is no need to suppress or manage your symptoms. By helping to resolve and correct the true cause, your vaginismus – along with any pain, anticipation, anxiety and fear – can automatically fade away, until eventually your problem is nothing but a vague and distant memory.
With Lesserian™ curative hypnotherapy you will not be required to relive any traumatic or upsetting situation. All you will feel is beautifully relaxed.
Lesserian™ Curative Hypnotherapy Trademark
Over the years many practitioners have incorporated the word “Curative” when describing their treatment, despite providing more basic methods of hypnotherapy. Due to concern over the confusion that was being caused by this, the trademark “Lesserian™ Curative Hypnotherapy ” was registered to mark the difference. The name “Lesserian™” Curative Hypnotherapy is therefore protected by law and denotes the method of treatment that requires the understanding of how people create their problems, which is the necessary first step on the path to correcting the cause of, and resolving, a symptom / condition. Only hypnotherapists licensed as Lesserian™ are qualified to use this technique.
Susannah Saunders is the longest practising Lesserian™ curative hypnotherapist in London.
