Hypnotherapy for Stage Fright

Hello, I’m Susannah. I’m a fully qualified clinical hypnotherapist with over 22 years of experience helping clients overcome stage fright and performance anxiety.

I have been awarded the Senior Qualification of Hypnotherapy Practice (SQHP) from the General Hypnotherapy Standards Council (GHSC) and the HPD from the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH). If you’re looking for hypnotherapy for stage fright and would like to explore how I might help, please get in touch.

Do you freeze on stage? Does the thought of performing fill you with dread? Do you avoid auditions, gigs, presentations or opportunities because the fear feels too overwhelming?

Hypnotherapy can be a powerful way to overcome stage fright and build greater confidence in your ability to perform.

Stage fright affects performers at every level, from beginners to experienced professionals. The physical symptoms can be intense, including trembling hands, a shaky voice, nausea, sweating, a racing heart or the unsettling feeling that your mind has suddenly gone blank. Unfortunately, the more we worry about these things happening, the more likely they are to occur.

This happens because the brain begins to treat performing as a threat. When that happens, it activates the fight, flight or freeze response, the same automatic survival system that would protect you from genuine danger. Once this response has been triggered, it can be difficult to simply think your way out of it.

Through clinical hypnosis, NLP and coaching, I help clients how to calm stage fright and teach their brain to respond differently, building expectations of calm, confidence and success.

Together, we’ll work on the thoughts, beliefs and habits that may be fueling your anxiety, helping you feel calmer, more confident and better able to focus on your performance rather than your nerves.

NLP, Coaching and Hypnotherapy for Stage Fright

Stage fright can occur for a number of reasons. Perhaps you had a bad experience once, forgot your lines, made a mistake in front of an audience or felt humiliated on stage, which then developed into a fear of it happening again. Or maybe the fear crept in gradually, fuelled by negative self-talk and worst-case thinking. Either way, your brain has learned to associate performing with danger.

When your brain perceives a threat, it triggers your stress response. Adrenaline floods your system, your heart races, your muscles tense and your mind goes blank. This was useful for our ancestors facing physical danger, but it’s not so helpful when you’re trying to deliver a performance.

The frustrating thing is that the more you try to control the anxiety, the worse it can get. Your subconscious mind, in its attempt to keep you safe, ends up triggering the very symptoms you dread.

Hypnotherapy for stage fright works by changing the way your nervous system responds to performing. In a relaxed, focused state, we can help your brain learn that there’s no real threat. We can calm the automatic fear response and build new confident associations with performing.

I usually work with clients for around 3 to 4 sessions, and you can schedule these at a pace that suits you.

Hypnotherapy for Stage Fright Can Help You

What is Stage Fright?

Stage fright is more than just normal nerves. Most performers feel some anticipation before going on stage, and a certain amount of adrenaline can actually enhance performance. But stage fright is different. It’s when the fear becomes so intense that it interferes with your ability to perform or stops you from performing altogether.

Stage fright can show up physically as shaking hands, a trembling voice, dry mouth, nausea, sweating, a racing heart or the feeling that your legs won’t hold you up. Mentally, you might experience your mind going blank, losing your place, forgetting words or music you know perfectly well or an overwhelming urge to run offstage.

Emotionally, there’s often a sense of dread in the days or weeks before a performance, difficulty sleeping and a harsh inner critic telling you you’re going to fail. Some performers develop avoidance behaviours, turning down opportunities or making excuses to avoid performing.

One of the confusing things about stage fright is that it can develop suddenly, even in experienced performers who’ve been fine for years. A single bad experience, a stressful period of life, or increasing pressure and expectations can all trigger it. This can be particularly distressing when performing has always been something you loved.

How Hypnosis for Stage Fright Works

Hypnosis is a natural, focused state of attention, similar to becoming absorbed in a good book or film, where your mind is more open to helpful ideas and new ways of thinking. Rather than simply trying to manage stage fright through willpower, hypnosis allows us to work with the automatic thoughts, beliefs and emotional responses that can make speaking in front of others feel so uncomfortable.

During sessions, I guide you into a deeply relaxed state and then gently help you mentally rehearse the situations that would normally trigger anxiety, whether that’s walking onto a stage, beginning a presentation, answering questions or speaking up in a meeting. As you repeatedly experience these situations whilst feeling calm, confident and in control, your brain begins to create new associations, making it easier to respond differently in real life.

I combine hypnosis with NLP, coaching and neuroscience-based techniques to help you overcome stage fright. Together, we identify the negative self-talk and unhelpful assumptions that often fuel performance anxiety. Many people with stage fright spend a great deal of time imagining what could go wrong, worrying about being judged, or replaying past experiences in their mind. These habits keep the brain and body on high alert. Through hypnosis and mental rehearsal, we begin to shift the focus towards how you want to think, feel and perform. Over time, many clients find they become less focused on themselves and more focused on their message, allowing them to speak with greater ease and enjoyment.

Who Can Benefit From Stage Fright Hypnosis?

Stage fright affects performers across every discipline and at every level of experience.

Musicians, singers, actors, dancers and comedians all commonly experience it. Whether you’re performing solo or as part of a group, the fear of being watched and judged can be overwhelming. For musicians, it often shows up as shaky hands or forgetting pieces they’ve played hundreds of times. For actors, it might be going blank on lines or feeling disconnected from the performance.

Public speakers, presenters and teachers can experience stage fright too, whether it’s presenting to colleagues, speaking at a conference or standing in front of a classroom. The same fear response kicks in whenever you’re the centre of attention.

Athletes and sports performers also struggle with performance anxiety. The pressure of competition, being watched by crowds or performing at crucial moments can trigger the same physical and mental symptoms.

Stage fright also affects people facing one-off events. Whether you’re giving a wedding speech, performing at an audition, presenting a thesis or speaking at a funeral. These high-stakes moments can feel terrifying, especially if you don’t perform regularly.

It’s worth noting that stage fright affects beginners and seasoned professionals alike. Years of experience don’t make you immune. In fact, the higher the stakes and expectations, the more vulnerable you can become. Whatever your situation, hypnosis for stage fright can help you perform with confidence again.

The Science Behind Stage Fright Treatment

Stage fright is controlled by the same part of the brain that handles all threats, known as the amygdala. When your brain perceives danger, the amygdala triggers your fight-or-flight response, flooding your system with stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.

These hormones cause physical symptoms like a racing heart, sweaty palms, shaky hands, dry mouth and a tight throat. They also affect your cognitive function, making it harder to remember your lines and stay in the moment.

The problem is that your amygdala can’t tell the difference between a real threat and an imagined one. If your brain has learned to associate performing with danger, it will trigger the same response whether you’re facing a hungry lion or a theatre full of people.

Hypnotherapy for stage fright works by retraining this response. In hypnosis, we can communicate directly with the part of your brain that’s triggering the fear, helping it learn that performing is safe. Once the threat response is switched off, the physical symptoms naturally subside and you can access your natural abilities.

Is Hypnotherapy for Stage Fright a Quick Fix?

The subconscious mind can be very responsive to positive suggestions, particularly when someone is motivated and ready for change. Some clients notice a shift in their confidence after just one or two sessions, while for others the process is more gradual.

Repetition plays an important role in helping new ways of thinking and responding become more familiar and automatic. That’s why I combine our sessions with recordings for you to listen to between appointments. This gives your brain regular opportunities to practise and reinforce these calmer, more confident responses.

Most clients work with me for around 3 to 4 hypnosis sessions for stage fright, although this varies from person to person. Some choose to continue for longer if they would also like to work on broader issues such as perfectionism, imposter syndrome, self-confidence or fear of judgment. The aim is not simply to reduce nerves, but to help you feel increasingly comfortable, confident and able to perform at your best
