What is hypnotherapy for menopause?
Hypnotherapy uses focused attention, relaxation and therapeutic suggestions to help you work on thoughts, feelings and reactions that can exacerbate your symptoms. During menopause, this can include anxiety, insomnia, low mood, apathy and a loss of confidence.Menopause hypnosis can also support weight management by addressing emotional eating, help with stress and poor sleep that affect memory and concentration, and address reduced libido and sexual confidence.Hypnotherapy for perimenopause
Symptoms can start years before your periods stop. You might be waking in the night, getting hot flushes, forgetting words or feeling unusually irritable while still having regular periods. You don’t have to wait until menopause to get help. We can start with the symptoms that are bothering you now, whether that’s night sweats, lying awake for hours or sudden anxiety at work.Hypnotherapy during and after menopause
Menopause means you haven’t had a period for 12 months, when there isn’t another cause and you aren’t using hormonal contraception. Hot flushes, sleep problems and other symptoms can continue afterwards.I offer hypnotherapy during perimenopause and after menopause. You can have it alongside HRT or other treatment. The NHS explains the different stages here. How menopause hypnotherapy sessions work
We’ll talk about the symptoms you want help with, and I’ll explain how I use hypnosis for them. Your first appointment includes hypnosis, as well as time to talk and ask questions.Your first session
Tell me what’s been happening: how often you have hot flushes, what your sleep is like, or whether brain fog is affecting your work. I’ll also ask about your health and any treatment you’re having. You don’t need to know which technique you need; I’ll explain what I recommend and why.During hypnosis
Once you’re in hypnosis, I use therapeutic suggestions and imagery for the symptoms we’ve discussed. For hot flushes, we’ll develop cooling sensations that you can practise again at home. For sleep, we’ll include suggestions for rest and address the expectation of lying awake. If confidence is a concern, we can rehearse a specific situation while changing the self-critical beliefs associated with it. I adapt the session to how you respond.Between appointments
I provide hypnosis recordings for you to use at home and explain how to use them. At your next appointment, we’ll talk about what you’ve noticed: fewer night sweats, longer periods of sleep or feeling calmer at work, for example. That helps me decide what to include next. The number of appointments depends on what you want help with and how you respond. We’ll discuss that together as we go.

How hypnotherapy helps with menopause symptoms
Hot flushes, night sweats, broken sleep, anxiety, low mood and brain fog can feed into one another. If you’re waking several times a night, it’s harder to concentrate the next day. Feeling tired and forgetful can leave you more anxious, irritable and less able to cope with the demands of work and home.Hypnotherapy uses deep relaxation, focused attention, suggestions and imagery to help ease symptoms and calm automatic stress reactions. If a hot flush starts and you immediately worry that everyone will notice, that worry adds tension to an already uncomfortable experience. In hypnosis, I can help you change that reaction and use cooling imagery to encourage a feeling of comfort.Clinical research has found that hypnosis can reduce the frequency and severity of hot flushes and improve sleep quality. Below, I explain how I use it for particular symptoms, as well as difficulties with confidence, eating and intimacy.Hypnotherapy for hot flushes and night sweats
Hot flushes can interrupt a meeting, leave you changing your clothes or wake you several times a night. Clinical hypnosis can reduce how often they happen and how severe they feel. It’s one of the non-hormonal treatments recommended by The Menopause Society.During hypnosis, I guide you through cooling imagery. You might imagine stepping into cool water or feeling a breeze against your skin, paying attention to the sensation of cooling down. I combine this with suggestions for coolness and comfort. You can practise the same imagery at home with a recording. This is treatment for the symptoms themselves. In the research linked below, women receiving clinical hypnosis reported fewer hot flushes and better sleep.Self-hypnosis for menopause symptoms
You can use hypnosis between appointments too. I provide recordings and explain how to practise, so you have something to use at home. For example, you can practise cooling imagery during the day or listen to a sleep recording when you’re ready for bed. If your confidence has taken a knock, a recording can also help you rehearse going into a meeting feeling prepared and at ease.Hypnotherapy for menopause anxiety
Perhaps you’ve started worrying about things you used to handle without a second thought. Your heart races before a meeting, you imagine something happening to your family, or one small mistake leaves you convinced you’re failing. In hypnosis, I help you change the mental pictures and beliefs that set off that fear. If you keep imagining going blank at work, for example, we can change that scene and rehearse answering calmly. I use suggestions that build confidence in your ability to cope, so an anxious thought doesn’t have to lead to hours of worry.Hypnotherapy for menopause low mood
Low mood can mean crying more easily, losing interest in seeing people or struggling to enjoy things you usually look forward to. You might also be giving yourself a hard time for not getting as much done.I use hypnosis to address that self-criticism and help you recall the feelings of enjoyment, confidence and connection that have been harder to find. We can rehearse getting back to something you’ve stopped doing, such as seeing a friend or returning to an activity you enjoy. That gives us something specific to build on between appointments.Hypnotherapy for menopause sleep problems
You’re tired all day, but wide awake when you finally get to bed. Or night sweats wake you and you spend the next two hours checking the clock, worrying about how you’ll get through tomorrow.Hypnosis can help you settle to sleep by reducing physical tension and the expectation of another bad night. I use suggestions for heaviness, comfort and sleepiness, along with imagery you find relaxing. If night sweats are waking you, we can include cooling imagery too. You’ll have recordings to use at home. We’ll look at whether you’re falling asleep more easily, waking less often or getting back to sleep sooner.Hypnotherapy for confidence during menopause
If you’re forgetting words, having hot flushes or struggling to concentrate, it’s easy to start doubting yourself. You might stop speaking up at work, turn down opportunities or avoid seeing people because you’re worried they’ll notice.I use hypnosis to challenge conclusions such as “I’m not good at my job any more” and help you remember your skills and experience. We can rehearse a presentation, a conversation or a social occasion while bringing back the feeling of being confident and capable.Hypnotherapy for menopause stress and irritability
You might hear yourself snapping at someone and wonder why you reacted so strongly. Then you feel guilty, even though you’re exhausted and have been trying to keep everything going.- A shorter temper: Snapping at people over things you’d usually brush off.
- Feeling overwhelmed: Finding it hard to cope with everyday demands, especially after a poor night’s sleep.
- Difficulty relaxing: Still feeling tense when you finally get time to yourself.
Hypnotherapy for menopause brain fog, memory and concentration
Forgetting why you walked into a room is frustrating. Losing your train of thought in a meeting can be upsetting, especially if you’ve always been someone people rely on. Brain fog can affect how quickly you think, how well you concentrate and how confident you feel at work.- Poor concentration: Trouble multitasking, staying focused or keeping track of a conversation.
- Memory lapses: Forgetting names, appointments or what you were about to say.
- Mental sluggishness: Taking longer to process information and feeling mentally tired.
Hypnotherapy for emotional eating during menopause
Changes in your weight or body shape can be upsetting. When you’re also tired, irritable or low, food can become the quickest way to feel better for a few minutes. You might then criticise yourself, feel worse and reach for more.I use hypnosis to help change that automatic response. We look at what happens before you eat for comfort, then use suggestions and mental rehearsal to practise responding differently. That can include recognising hunger and fullness, stopping the “I’ve ruined it now” thinking after a snack, or rebuilding motivation for exercise you enjoy. We can also address how you feel about your body. You don’t need to criticise yourself into making changes, or wait until you reach a particular weight to feel more comfortable being seen or enjoying intimacy.Hypnotherapy for sexual confidence during menopause
When you’re tired, your sex drive has dropped or you feel uncomfortable with changes in your body, sex can become another thing you feel under pressure about. You might avoid intimacy because you’re worried about what your partner expects.Hypnosis can help you feel less self-conscious and more at ease with intimacy. I use suggestions and imagery to reduce pressure, address negative thoughts about your body and help you imagine closeness that feels comfortable and enjoyable. There’s no expectation that you should want sex more often than you do.If dryness or pain is part of the problem, your GP or menopause clinician can help treat it. Tell me about it too, so we take it into account.Benefits of hypnotherapy for menopause
Relief can mean getting through a meeting without a hot flush, having more energy after a better night’s sleep or feeling less irritable with your family. Depending on the symptoms you bring, we’ll work towards:- Fewer hot flushes and less disruption from night sweats
- Falling asleep more easily and feeling better rested
- Feeling calmer and less irritable at home and at work
- Less self-criticism when you forget a word or lose your train of thought
- Feeling more in control of emotional eating
- Greater confidence in your body and more ease with intimacy
Hypnotherapy alongside menopause treatment
You can have hypnotherapy alongside HRT or other medical treatment. Tell me what you’re taking and whether you’re having any other therapy, so I can take that into account. If you’re already receiving treatment but still struggling with night sweats, broken sleep or anxiety, we can discuss adding hypnosis to help ease those symptoms.NICE recommends considering menopause-specific CBT for hot flushes and night sweats, and for sleep problems associated with them. Clinical hypnosis is also recommended for hot flushes and night sweats in The Menopause Society’s 2023 position statement. You can discuss the available treatments with your GP or menopause specialist.Research on hypnotherapy for menopause
Hot flushes and night sweats
A 2013 trial involved 187 postmenopausal women. After five weekly clinical hypnosis sessions and home practice, the hypnosis group reported about 74% fewer hot flushes at 12 weeks, compared with 17% in the structured-attention control group. The combined frequency-and-severity score fell by about 80% in the hypnosis group. Sleep quality also improved.Read the trial by Elkins and colleaguesClinical guidance
