3 Most Common Types of Eating Disorders and Their Treatment

types of eating disorders

While the label “Eating Disorders” may make you think that these disorders are mainly related to the body, for the most part, they aren’t.

The term eating disorders refers to various complex and severe mental conditions, which often require the help of both physical and mental health professionals.

According to studies, more than 3 million people in the UK are affected by some sort of eating disorder that makes it harder for them to live their lives. Of those affected, approximately 75% are females.

Experts also suggest that most eating disorders develop during adolescence. However, there have been a few cases where these disorders have developed much earlier or later on in life.

Nevertheless, eating disorders can have severe health consequences that can completely shatter the lives of the affected and everyone around them.

In this article, we’ll talk about the 3 most common types of eating disorders and also find out how hypnotherapy can help.

1. Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia nervosa is probably one of the most commonly diagnosed eating disorders. Affecting women more than men, the disorder causes people to believe that they are overweight whilst being underweight.

This constant fear of gaining weight leads to compulsive behaviour that makes them restrict their food intake. The disorder can cause severe damage to the body, as enough nutritional food is not consumed due to the impending fear of gaining weight.

Anorexia nervosa is generally found in two subtypes. One involves the individual restricting their calorie intake to a great extent, leading to extreme weight loss through fasting, exercise, etc. The other involves purging or vomiting their food after consumption, as a way to taste the food and trick the brain into thinking that they have eaten, without really consuming the calories.

2. Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia nervosa is another commonly found disorder that can be considered the opposite of anorexia nervosa. The disorder involves various episodes of binge eating.

It refers to the consumption of unusually large amounts of food until the person is unbearably full. When suffering from this disorder, a person finds him \ herself unable to stop or control his/her eating habits, resulting in severe physical damage to their digestive organs.

Furthermore, in many cases, the patient might forcefully purge the food in order to relieve discomfort. Such purging activities may involve vomiting, the use of laxatives, enemas, etc.

3. Binge Eating Disorder

Binge eating disorder is a very common disease affecting adolescents and young adults. While the symptoms of binge eating are pretty similar to those of bulimia nervosa, the people affected by binge eating disorder do not usually turn to purge.

The disorder involves episodes of binge eating over short periods of time. Just like patients with bulimia nervosa, they also find themselves with a lack of control over their eating habits.

These people are usually overweight and suffer from obesity, leading to increased chances of strokes, heart attacks, diabetes, and other forms of physical conditions caused by obesity.

Hypnotherapy for Eating Disorders

While there is a wide range of treatments that are usually prescribed for eating disorders, hypnotherapy is one of the most common ones.

Hypnotherapy can help with eating disorders through various techniques, such as cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy and exposure therapy.

Not only will hypnotherapy sessions help change your point of view towards food by getting to the root of your problem, but they also help deal with any anxiety and depression that come with it.

This way, you can slowly experience a change in your behaviour and feel more confident and in control of your episodes.
