Hypnotherapy for Arachnophobia in London
Hello, I’m Susannah. I’m a fully qualified clinical hypnotherapist with over 22 years of experience helping people overcome their fear of spiders.
I hold the Senior Qualification in Hypnotherapy Practice (SQHP) from the General Hypnotherapy Standards Council (GHSC), and the HPD from the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH). If you’re looking for hypnotherapy for arachnophobia, I’d be happy to help.
Whether it’s a spider in the room, on a television programme, or just the thought of one nearby, arachnophobia can trigger an immediate fear response that feels completely out of proportion. Some people freeze. Others run. Some feel panicky and sweaty, even when they know logically that the spider is harmless.
That’s where hypnotherapy for fear of spiders can help. Hypnosis treatment for spider phobia works with the part of your mind that’s triggering that primitive threat response. When you’re in a deeply relaxed, focused state, your subconscious becomes open to positive suggestions, so we can begin to change that reaction, helping you feel calmer, safer, and more in control.
I use a combination of NLP and clinical hypnosis to help reduce phobic responses. If your fear of spiders started with a specific event or memory, we can help your mind reprocess it in a more neutral way, so it stops triggering the panic. If your arachnophobia feels completely irrational, we work directly with the subconscious to create a calmer, more appropriate response.

NLP, Coaching and Hypnosis for Treatment for Arachnophobia
Your brain’s main role is to keep you safe, so it’s always on the lookout for anything it believes could be a threat. With arachnophobia, at some point, your brain created the belief that spiders are dangerous. That belief might have come from a past experience, something you saw, or even just the way people around you reacted.
Once that association is in place, your brain treats spiders as if they’re a real threat. It activates the fight, flight, or freeze response automatically, even when you know logically that you’re safe.

When this survival instinct kicks in, your brain floods you with adrenaline and cortisol to prepare you to react fast. You might find your heart pounding, your muscles tighten, or perhaps get sweaty palms.
But the good news is that the brain is incredibly adaptable, and it’s always learning. Hypnotherapy for arachnophobia works with your subconscious to change this fear response by correcting the belief that spiders are dangerous. Once your mind starts thinking about spiders in a neutral way, you will respond calmly and rationally.
My hypnotherapy for arachnophobia can help you:
- Stay calm and relaxed when you see a spider
- Rebuild a sense of safety and control in your environment
- Feel more confident in situations that used to trigger the anxiety
- Create more positive beliefs and mental images to trigger calm and confidence
- Let go of anxious “what if” thoughts and respond more calmly
How Hypnotherapy for Fear of Spiders Works
My personalised treatment for arachnophobia sessions combines solution-focused hypnotherapy, NLP, and coaching, and is tailored to suit you and your goals.
During your treatment for fear of spiders, we start by understanding how your fear of spiders shows up and how life will be better once you’ve overcome this phobia. From there, we work together to help your brain respond differently, so that you start feeling more relaxed and in control in those situations that would have previously triggered panic.
Hypnosis is a calm, focused state where your mind becomes more receptive to helpful ideas and positive change. Most people find it deeply relaxing, a bit like being half-awake and half-asleep, where your body feels at ease and your mind begins to daydream. It’s a bit like being in a meeting, where your mind wanders even though you’re aware someone is talking. We use this state to help your brain rewire those old patterns and create a new, more balanced response.

Understanding arachnophobia
What is arachnophobia?
Arachnophobia is an intense fear of spiders. It can involve panic at seeing one, avoiding places where you expect them or checking a room repeatedly. The fear can affect sleep, holidays, gardening and feeling comfortable at home.
Is arachnophobia more than disliking spiders?
Yes. You can dislike spiders without changing your plans or feeling panicked. A phobia can make a small sighting feel like an emergency, keep you out of a room or leave you unable to settle long after the spider has gone.
Why do I panic even when I know the spider is unlikely to harm me?
An automatic fear response can happen faster than deliberate reasoning. Knowing the facts does not always stop a racing heart or the urge to run. Treatment can address that immediate reaction as well as what you imagine the spider will do.
Can disgust be part of a spider phobia?
Yes. Some people are more troubled by how a spider looks or moves than by the possibility of being bitten. Tell me whether fear, disgust, unpredictability or the thought of contact is the strongest part for you.
Can spider pictures trigger arachnophobia?
Yes. Photos, videos or even talking about spiders can trigger anxiety for some people. We discuss this before deciding how to approach treatment, so preparation can begin at a level you can manage.
Why do I keep checking for spiders?
Checking corners, bedding or clothing can briefly reduce worry, but it can also keep you on alert. We can address the fear of missing a spider and rehearse ordinary activities without repeatedly scanning for one.
Can arachnophobia begin without a frightening spider experience?
Yes. Some people remember an incident; others have been afraid for as long as they can recall. Seeing other people react fearfully can also influence expectations. You do not need a clear origin story to discuss treatment.
When is it worth getting help for fear of spiders?
If the fear restricts where you go, affects sleep or leaves you dependent on someone else whenever you see a spider, support can be useful. Your goal can be simply handling an everyday encounter more calmly; you do not have to want to like spiders.
How hypnotherapy for arachnophobia works
Can hypnotherapy help with arachnophobia?
Hypnotherapy can help address the automatic fear response, anxious expectations and avoidance involved in arachnophobia. We use therapeutic suggestions and mental rehearsal to practise responding with less panic. The focus is on the situations you want to handle more comfortably, rather than simply telling yourself to be brave.
How does hypnosis for arachnophobia work with the subconscious?
By subconscious, I mean the reactions and expectations that happen automatically. In hypnosis, we can address thoughts such as “I cannot cope if a spider moves towards me” and rehearse a different response. This gives us a way to work on fear that persists even when you know logically that a situation is manageable.
What techniques are used in hypnotherapy for arachnophobia?
Sessions can combine clinical hypnosis, therapeutic suggestions, imagery, NLP and coaching. For example, we can rehearse noticing a spider at home and deciding what to do without immediately panicking. We also look at the thoughts that increase the fear and agree practical steps for using the work outside sessions.
Do I need to know what caused my arachnophobia?
No. We can begin with the situations you fear now, what you expect will happen and how your body responds. There does not have to be a single event behind it, and treatment does not depend on recovering a hidden memory.
Will I have to face my fear during hypnosis?
We discuss how to approach the fear and agree manageable steps. Imagery can let you rehearse a situation before trying it in everyday life. You will know what we are planning; the purpose is to build confidence through agreed practice, rather than surprise you with a feared situation.
What research supports hypnosis for arachnophobia?
A 2019 meta-analysis of hypnosis for anxiety reported benefits across the studies reviewed, particularly when hypnosis was combined with other psychological treatment. It studied anxiety more broadly and does not establish a specific success rate for arachnophobia. We can discuss the approach alongside established treatment options such as CBT.
Can I have hypnotherapy alongside CBT or medication?
Hypnotherapy can be considered alongside other care. Tell me about any therapy and prescribed medicines so we can discuss how the approaches fit. Keep following your prescriber’s advice and discuss medication changes with them.
What does progress with arachnophobia look like?
We agree concrete goals and review them: what you can now do, how much worry you have beforehand and how quickly you recover after feeling anxious. Improvement is about being able to do more with greater confidence, rather than judging every nervous sensation as a setback.
Specific fears and situations
Can hypnotherapy help me stay in a room after seeing a spider?
Yes. We can rehearse the first moment of noticing one and responding without an immediate rush of panic. The goal can be staying calm enough to decide what to do, rather than feeling you must abandon the room for the rest of the day.
Will I have to hold a spider during hypnotherapy?
Holding a spider is not a requirement for enquiring or beginning hypnosis. We agree goals and practice beforehand. You can want to cope with an ordinary sighting without wanting direct contact with a spider.
Will you show me spider pictures without warning?
No. We discuss the approach and agree any use of pictures or other practice in advance. If images are difficult, we can begin with talking and mental rehearsal rather than surprising you with one.
Can hypnotherapy help with fear of spiders in the bedroom?
Yes. We can address checking before bed, imagining a spider moving towards you and struggling to sleep after a sighting. Rehearsal can focus on settling in your room without repeatedly inspecting it for danger.
Can hypnotherapy help with gardening or going into a shed?
Yes. We can rehearse the setting you avoid and the possibility of an ordinary spider encounter. The focus is on reducing panic and excessive checking so you can make sensible decisions and return to activities you want to enjoy.
Can hypnotherapy help with spider season anxiety?
Yes. We can address the anticipation that builds around a time of year when you expect more sightings. That includes watching the floor constantly, dreading evenings or keeping rooms off-limits before anything has happened.
Can hypnotherapy help if I worry about passing my spider fear to my children?
We can focus on your own response and rehearse staying calmer when a child is present. You do not need to pretend to love spiders. The goal can be responding without panic and showing that an uncomfortable encounter can be handled.
Can hypnotherapy help with spider phobia before a holiday?
Yes. Tell me about the destination and what you fear will happen. We can address anticipatory anxiety and rehearse responding calmly while still following appropriate local advice about wildlife and genuine risks.
Finding a hypnotherapist and booking sessions
How do I choose a hypnotherapist for arachnophobia?
Look for recognised qualifications, professional registration and experience working with fears and anxiety. Ask how treatment is tailored and how progress is reviewed. I hold the HPD and Senior Qualification in Hypnotherapy Practice and have practised since 2003. Read more on my About page.
Where can I find a hypnotherapist for arachnophobia in London?
I offer one-to-one appointments at City Hypnotherapy Centre, Longcroft House, 2–8 Victoria Avenue, London EC2M 4NS, near Liverpool Street. Contact me to discuss arachnophobia and arrange an appointment.
Do you offer online hypnotherapy for arachnophobia?
Yes. I offer sessions by Zoom as well as in London. You need a private, quiet space, a reliable internet connection and a comfortable seat. We discuss your fears and use hypnosis remotely, with practice linked to your own goals.
What happens in the first arachnophobia hypnotherapy session?
We discuss the situations you find difficult, how long the fear has affected you and what you want to do differently. We agree where to start. The first appointment includes hypnosis as well as this conversation, so treatment begins during that session.
How many hypnotherapy sessions will I need for arachnophobia?
The number depends on the situations involved, how widely the fear affects your life and how you respond to treatment. We discuss an initial plan and review progress together. Tell me about any upcoming journey, appointment or other deadline when you enquire.
How much does hypnotherapy for arachnophobia cost?
Current session fees are on my prices and appointments page. You can contact me to discuss the approach before arranging your first session.
What can I practise between arachnophobia hypnotherapy sessions?
We can agree a small step related to your goal and rehearse it in the session. Relaxation or self-hypnosis practice can help reinforce the work. We review what happened and adjust the next step, so practice is purposeful and manageable.
