What is emetophobia?
Emetophobia is an intense fear of vomiting. It can include a fear of being sick yourself, of seeing or hearing someone else be sick, or of feeling nauseous. It is also known as the fear of being sick or a vomit phobia.
Many people with emetophobia have rarely been sick in recent years, but the fear stays all the same. Knowing that sickness is unlikely does not necessarily switch off an automatic fear response. You can understand the facts and still feel frightened.
Different forms of emetophobia
Emetophobia shows up differently from person to person. The main focus of the fear might be:
- being sick yourself
- being sick in public or in front of others
- seeing or hearing someone else be sick
- catching a stomach bug
- feeling nauseous and losing control
- a child or partner being sick
Many people experience more than one of these, and the focus can shift over time.
Common triggers of emetophobia
Triggers can be internal or external. A queasy stomach, indigestion or feeling hot can set off a wave of fear, even when the sensation is caused by anxiety itself.
External triggers include stomach bugs going round at work or school and someone saying they feel unwell. Travel, alcohol, eating out, a scene in a film and news of norovirus outbreaks can also set it off. Winter can be especially hard for people with emetophobia.
Physical symptoms of emetophobia
When the fear is triggered, the body reacts with the fight or flight response. Common symptoms include:
- nausea or a churning stomach
- a racing heart
- sweating or feeling hot
- shaking
- shallow breathing
- dizziness
- an urgent need to escape or get to a bathroom
- a dry mouth
Many of these sensations feel similar to being about to vomit, which adds to the fear.
How hypnotherapy for emetophobia works
Hypnotherapy for emetophobia works with the anxious expectations, beliefs and learned reactions that keep the fear going. In hypnosis, we can explore ideas such as “being sick would be unbearable” or “I will not cope”, and develop a more balanced, reassuring response.
Sessions use focused attention, relaxation and therapeutic suggestions. Imagery and metaphor can help you experience a situation differently, while mental rehearsal lets you practise eating out, travelling or responding to a queasy feeling without immediately preparing for the worst.
We also address the background stress that leaves you on edge. Your personalised recording supports practice between appointments, so the work continues beyond the session.
Techniques used in emetophobia hypnosis
Emetophobia hypnosis draws on many techniques, and sessions are tailored to you. Depending on what you need, they can include:
- working on the beliefs and stories that keep the fear going
- positive suggestion to build calm and confidence
- metaphor and imagery that the subconscious responds to
- working with the part of you that stays on alert to protect you
- releasing tension held in the body
- turning down the alarm response to stomach sensations
- picturing yourself eating out, travelling or caring for others calmly
- rehearsing staying calm in situations you have been avoiding, where helpful
Each session uses the techniques that suit you, at a pace you are comfortable with.
Working with a hypnotherapist for emetophobia
Working with a hypnotherapist for emetophobia starts with an initial consultation. In this first session, we talk through how the fear affects you and what you would like to be able to do. That might be eating out or travelling.
I also explain how anxiety and the subconscious mind create fear. The first session includes hypnosis, so the work begins straight away, at a pace that feels manageable.
My approach is solution-focused, so sessions concentrate on what you want and the progress you are making.
What happens in an emetophobia hypnotherapy session
Each session after the first starts with a short conversation about what has gone well since we last spoke. Most of the session is hypnosis, using the techniques that suit you.
After each session, you receive the personalised recording of that session to listen to before the next one. Listening regularly helps reinforce a calmer response at a subconscious level, and it can be useful on days when the fear feels stronger.

Hypnotherapy for anxiety and nausea
Anxiety and nausea can feed each other. When you feel frightened, changes in your stress response can leave your stomach unsettled. You might then read that sensation as a sign that you are about to be sick.
That interpretation creates more fear, and the nausea grows. Hypnotherapy for anxiety and nausea aims to calm this loop at a subconscious level, so stomach sensations can be noticed without setting off panic.
Safety behaviours and avoidance in emetophobia
Most people with emetophobia develop ways to feel safer. These can include checking use-by dates, overcooking food, frequent handwashing, carrying mints or anti-sickness tablets and sitting near exits. Some people also avoid anyone who mentions feeling unwell, or keep their distance from children during bug season.
These habits bring short-term relief, but they also tell the subconscious that the danger is real. Over time they take up more energy and can make the fear stronger.
The distinction is between sensible hygiene and checks that keep expanding because you never feel reassured. We work on the extra checking and avoidance, while keeping ordinary food-safety and health precautions.
Emetophobia and eating
Food is often closely tied to emetophobia. Many people avoid foods they link with being sick, such as chicken, seafood, eggs or anything from a buffet. Some eat less when they feel anxious.
Eating out can feel risky, and some people only eat food they have prepared themselves. Others skip meals before travelling or social events. If your eating has become very restricted, or you have lost weight, speak to your GP as well.
How emetophobia limits your life
Emetophobia can affect almost every part of life. People may avoid travelling, especially by boat, plane or coach, or turn down social events where alcohol is involved. Some stay away from hospitals and crowded places.
At work, a colleague mentioning a stomach bug can lead to days of worry. Relationships can be strained when a partner does not understand the fear, and many people feel embarrassed about how much it controls their choices.
Emetophobia, pregnancy and parenthood
For some women, the fear of morning sickness makes pregnancy feel frightening, and some delay or avoid it altogether. During pregnancy, emetophobia can make nausea especially distressing. Hypnotherapy can be used before or during pregnancy, alongside care from your midwife or GP.
Parents with emetophobia often find it very hard when their children are unwell. The urge to keep away can clash with wanting to care for them, which brings guilt as well as fear.
Who is affected by emetophobia?
Emetophobia can affect anyone, at any age. It often begins in childhood or the teenage years, sometimes after a memorable bout of sickness, and can continue into adulthood. It is more common than many people realise.
It can also start later in life, after food poisoning, a difficult pregnancy or a period of high stress. Many people live with it for years without telling anyone, often because they feel it sounds strange to others.
What causes emetophobia?
Emetophobia usually develops from a mix of factors. A frightening experience of being sick, or of seeing someone else be sick, is a common starting point. Growing up around anxiety, or a general tendency to worry, can also play a part.
Sometimes there is no clear starting point. Learned fear, sensitivity to bodily sensations and patterns of avoidance can all keep emetophobia going. You do not need to identify one original event before seeking help.
Emetophobia, hypnosis and the subconscious mind
With emetophobia, fear can arrive before you have had time to think: your stomach turns, you scan for an exit and you start checking whether anyone looks unwell. When I talk about subconscious patterns, I mean these automatic associations, expectations and reactions.
Hypnosis gives us a focused way to work with those patterns. We can address the expectation that nausea means disaster, strengthen your confidence in coping and rehearse everyday situations with a different response. That might mean enjoying a meal without monitoring every mouthful or staying present with your child when they feel unwell.
What hypnosis for emetophobia feels like
Hypnosis is a natural, relaxed state, similar to daydreaming or being absorbed in a film. You remain aware of what is happening and in control throughout, and you can open your eyes at any time.
Hypnosis for emetophobia is a clinical process, very different from stage hypnosis. Sessions are calm and gentle, and work at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
Hypnotherapy for fear of being sick: trusting your body again
Over time, emetophobia can leave you feeling that your own body cannot be trusted. Every twinge or rumble is checked for danger, and an unsettled stomach after a meal can lead to cancelled plans.
Hypnotherapy for fear of being sick focuses on rebuilding that trust at a subconscious level. The aim is for ordinary stomach sensations to feel ordinary again, so you can eat, travel and spend time with others without constant monitoring.
Everyday steps that support hypnotherapy for emetophobia
Alongside hypnotherapy, some everyday steps can help:
- eating regular meals, which can help keep your stomach settled
- gentle, unforced breathing when you feel anxious
- agreeing gradual steps to reduce excessive checking, while keeping sensible hygiene
- limiting searches about illness and outbreaks
- getting good sleep and regular exercise to lower stress
- telling someone you trust about the fear
Small steps, taken at your own pace, tend to work best.
Is hypnotherapy for emetophobia right for you?
Hypnotherapy for emetophobia can suit anyone whose fear of vomiting is affecting their eating, travel, work or relationships. It tends to work best when you are ready to make changes and listen to the personalised recording between sessions.
If you are eating very little, have lost weight or have symptoms of OCD or depression, speak to your GP as well. Hypnotherapy can be used alongside other support.
Choosing a hypnotherapist for emetophobia
When choosing a hypnotherapist for emetophobia, look for recognised qualifications and experience of working with phobias and anxiety. It also helps to feel comfortable with the person you choose, and an initial consultation is a good chance to ask questions.
I hold the SQHP and HPD qualifications and have been practising as a clinical hypnotherapist since 2003.

Research on hypnotherapy, anxiety and emetophobia
Hypnosis for anxiety
A 2019 meta-analysis of 15 studies, including 17 trials, found that hypnosis reduced anxiety compared with control conditions. Results were stronger when hypnosis was combined with other psychological approaches.
Read the meta-analysis of hypnosis for anxiety
This is encouraging evidence for anxiety work. It does not establish a success rate for emetophobia: high-quality trials specifically testing hypnosis for fear of vomiting remain limited.
Research specifically on fear of vomiting
A small 2016 randomised trial compared 12 sessions of cognitive behavioural therapy with a waiting list in 24 people with emetophobia. The CBT group improved more. It was a pilot study of CBT, not hypnosis, and larger studies are needed.

The NHS includes hypnotherapy among treatments for phobias and explains how talking therapies and other support can help. If fear is severely restricting your eating or daily life, your GP can help you access appropriate care alongside work on anxiety.

Understanding emetophobia
What is emetophobia?
Emetophobia is a strong fear of vomiting, feeling nauseous or seeing another person be sick. It becomes a problem when the fear shapes your meals, travel, work or relationships. Someone can go years without vomiting and still spend a great deal of time worrying about it.
Is emetophobia the same as disliking being sick?
Most people dislike vomiting. With emetophobia, the possibility of sickness can bring panic, repeated checking and avoidance even when nobody is ill. The difference is how much fear and restriction it creates, rather than how unpleasant you find sickness itself.
Can I have emetophobia if I am mainly afraid of other people vomiting?
Yes. The fear can centre on someone else being sick, your own sickness, or both. A parent might cope with their own nausea but panic when a child feels unwell. Sessions begin with your particular triggers rather than assuming everyone has the same fear.
Can emetophobia make me feel nauseous?
Anxiety can cause nausea, and interpreting that feeling as a warning can increase anxiety further. Hypnotherapy can address the anxious reaction to stomach sensations. New, persistent or unexplained nausea should also be discussed with your GP rather than automatically put down to anxiety.
Why does reassurance only help for a short time?
Asking whether food is safe or whether someone feels sick can bring immediate relief. But when certainty becomes the only way to feel comfortable, you may need to ask again. Sessions can work on tolerating everyday uncertainty and reducing the urge to keep checking.
What causes fear of vomiting?
A distressing experience of sickness can contribute, but there is not always one identifiable cause. Learned fear, anxiety about bodily sensations and avoidance can reinforce each other. You do not need to remember a childhood event or recover a hidden memory before making progress.
Is emetophobia linked with OCD or health anxiety?
There can be overlap, particularly when contamination fears, repeated checking or reassurance seeking are prominent. They are not automatically the same condition. If these patterns take up a lot of your day, a GP or qualified mental health clinician can assess what support would be most appropriate.
Can emetophobia lead to restricted eating?
Yes. Fear of sickness can lead to avoiding foods, skipping meals or eating only a small range of familiar foods. If you are eating very little, losing weight or struggling to drink enough, seek medical support. Anxiety work can accompany appropriate nutritional and psychological care.
How hypnotherapy for emetophobia works
Can hypnotherapy help with emetophobia?
Hypnotherapy can help you work on the anxiety, fearful expectations and automatic reactions surrounding sickness. Sessions can include therapeutic suggestions, belief work and rehearsal of situations you avoid. Research specifically on hypnosis for emetophobia is limited, so progress is assessed through your own goals rather than a promised cure or success rate.
How does hypnosis for fear of vomiting work with the subconscious?
Subconscious work means addressing reactions that happen automatically: scanning your stomach, expecting catastrophe or feeling you must escape. In hypnosis, focused attention and suggestions give you a way to explore those associations and practise a calmer response, rather than simply telling yourself not to worry.
What techniques can an emetophobia hypnotherapist use?
Techniques can include imagery, metaphor, therapeutic suggestions, confidence building and mental rehearsal. For example, you might rehearse staying engaged in a conversation at a restaurant instead of repeatedly checking your stomach. The choice depends on your triggers and what you want to change.
Can hypnosis help with the nausea and panic cycle?
Hypnosis can support work on the fear and tension that amplify your response to nausea. We can practise noticing a sensation without immediately interpreting it as a crisis. This addresses the anxiety cycle; ongoing nausea or vomiting also needs appropriate medical assessment.
Will emetophobia hypnosis stop me ever being sick?
No treatment can guarantee that you will never vomit. The useful goal is to reduce the fear, checking and avoidance that make the possibility of sickness dominate everyday life. Progress can mean eating more freely or keeping plans even when you cannot have complete certainty.
Will I have to watch upsetting videos or make myself vomit?
Making yourself vomit is not part of my hypnotherapy sessions. We discuss the approach and work at an agreed pace. CBT for emetophobia can include planned, gradual exposure with a trained therapist; exposure does not mean you have to induce vomiting.
Do I have to know when my emetophobia started?
No. We can begin with what happens now: the sensations you fear, situations you avoid and thoughts that increase panic. An earlier experience can be discussed if it is relevant, but treatment does not depend on discovering one original cause.
What does hypnosis for emetophobia feel like?
Hypnosis usually involves feeling relaxed and absorbed in the therapist’s words or your own imagery. You do not need to feel asleep or experience anything dramatic. Some people notice physical relaxation; others notice that it becomes easier to focus without checking everything around them.
Eating, travelling and family life
Can hypnotherapy help me eat out with less fear of vomiting?
Sessions can address the expectations that make restaurants feel threatening, such as assuming unfamiliar food will make you ill. In hypnosis, we can rehearse choosing a meal and enjoying the company around you. Any practical steps should retain normal food-safety precautions and respect genuine allergies or medical dietary needs.
Can emetophobia hypnotherapy help with excessive use-by-date checking?
We can work on repeated checks that continue after you have already followed sensible food-safety guidance. The aim is to feel able to finish a normal check and move on. Hypnotherapy does not involve ignoring use-by dates or deliberately eating unsafe food.
Can hypnosis help with fear of catching a stomach bug?
Hypnotherapy can address the constant scanning, catastrophic thinking and avoidance that continue beyond sensible precautions. You can keep ordinary hygiene while working towards less preoccupation with who might be ill. No therapy can promise that you will never catch an infection.
Can hypnotherapy help with emetophobia on planes, trains or boats?
Sessions can focus on feeling trapped, anticipating nausea and worrying about others being sick. Mental rehearsal can help you picture travelling with more confidence and flexibility. If motion sickness is also a problem, speak to a pharmacist or GP about suitable ways to manage it.
Can hypnotherapy help when my child or partner feels sick?
We can work on the panic, urge to escape and guilt that can arise when someone close to you is unwell. Hypnosis can include rehearsal of responding calmly and asking for practical help when needed. The goal is to make caring for someone feel more manageable.
Can I seek help for emetophobia before pregnancy?
Yes. You can seek support for the fear of morning sickness before making decisions about pregnancy. Sessions can address catastrophic expectations and confidence in coping. Discuss pregnancy-related nausea, medication and health concerns with your GP or midwife as well.
Can I have emetophobia hypnotherapy during pregnancy?
Contact me to discuss your circumstances and the anxiety you want help with, alongside your usual maternity care. Hypnotherapy focuses on the fear and stress around sickness. Persistent vomiting, dehydration or difficulty eating during pregnancy requires advice from your maternity team or GP.
Can hypnosis help me stop cancelling plans because I feel queasy?
We can work on the habit of treating every stomach sensation as a reason to cancel. Sessions can include rehearsal of staying with a plan while managing uncertainty. Genuine illness still needs sensible care; the focus is on fear-driven restrictions that have taken over your routine.
Evidence and choosing support
What research supports hypnosis for emetophobia?
There is research showing benefits of hypnosis for anxiety, but it should not be presented as proof of a specific cure for emetophobia. Direct, high-quality hypnosis trials for fear of vomiting remain limited. The research section above links to anxiety research and a separate emetophobia CBT trial so you can see the distinction.
Is CBT an option for fear of vomiting?
Yes. CBT is a treatment option for phobias, and a small randomised trial specifically studied CBT for emetophobia. It can address catastrophic interpretations, avoidance and checking. A suitably trained therapist can explain gradual exposure and how the work would be adapted to you.
Can I use hypnotherapy alongside CBT or other therapy?
It can be possible to use hypnotherapy alongside other support. Tell me about your current treatment so we can discuss whether the approaches fit together. If another therapist is guiding exposure work, consistency matters; any coordination with them would be discussed with you first.
When should I see my GP about emetophobia?
Speak to your GP when fear is substantially restricting daily life, eating or drinking, or when you have ongoing physical symptoms. Weight loss, repeated vomiting or dehydration need medical attention. A GP can assess physical concerns and help you access appropriate psychological support.
How do I choose a hypnotherapist for emetophobia?
Look for recognised qualifications, experience with anxiety and phobias, and a clear explanation of the approach. Ask how progress will be assessed and how other treatment will be taken into account. Feeling comfortable enough to describe your fear honestly is important too.
Who is the best hypnotherapist for emetophobia?
There is no single best hypnotherapist for everyone. Qualifications, relevant experience and the relationship you build all matter. You can try my free hypnosis audio to hear my voice and contact me to discuss what you are looking for before deciding.
What experience and qualifications does Susannah Saunders have?
I established City Hypnotherapy Centre in 2003. My qualifications include a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, the Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma and the Senior Qualification in Hypnotherapy Practice. I am registered with the CNHC and am a GHR registered member. You can read about my experience and qualifications.
What improvements can I look for during emetophobia hypnotherapy?
Useful signs include spending less time checking, eating a wider range of suitable foods, keeping social plans and feeling less alarmed by ordinary stomach sensations. We agree goals that matter to you and review changes over time. Improvement is individual and does not require never feeling nervous again.

Will I receive a personalised hypnosis recording?
Yes. You receive the personalised recording of your session to use between appointments. Regular listening supports practice of the suggestions and responses we have worked on.
