ADHD hypnotherapy in London and online
Does your mind jump from one thing to the next, leaving tasks half-finished and you feeling overwhelmed? Do you struggle to get started, switch off at night or deal with a harsh inner critic? I help adults with ADHD explore the stress, anxiety and subconscious beliefs that can make ADHD harder to live with, so they can feel calmer, more focused and more confident in how their mind works.
Hello, I’m Susannah. I am a fully qualified hypnotherapist with 20+ years of experience, offering clinical hypnotherapy in the City of London, near Liverpool Street, and online. I work with adults with ADHD, whether recently diagnosed, waiting for an assessment or living with it for years. Hypnotherapy works alongside medication, coaching and other support, helping with the anxiety, overwhelm and self-doubt that so often come with ADHD. Contact me to find out more or book your initial consultation.
Prices and appointmentsYour first appointment includes hypnosis.

Can hypnotherapy help with ADHD?
Hypnotherapy can be used alongside ADHD assessment, medication and specialist support. My work focuses on additional challenges such as anxiety, overwhelm, self-criticism and bedtime worry.
The aim is to make day-to-day life feel more manageable. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition, not a result of negative thinking, and hypnosis does not remove it. We agree practical goals and review your progress together.
ADHD hypnotherapy alongside medication and coaching
Hypnotherapy can be considered alongside medication, coaching and practical support such as reminders, planning tools or working alongside another person. We discuss how the approaches fit together and avoid adding unnecessary pressure.
ADHD care is individual. Medication and ADHD-focused psychological support have their own roles; my sessions focus on stress, anxiety and confidence. Any decisions about medication should be made with your prescriber.
How hypnotherapy for ADHD works
We begin with the concerns you want help with, such as stress, overwhelm or harsh self-criticism. Hypnosis offers a way to rehearse a more supportive response and imagine manageable steps in everyday situations.
Sessions may combine relaxation, imagery and therapeutic suggestions with practical goals. We focus on changes such as approaching a task with less pressure or winding down more comfortably, and review how the work is helping.
Techniques used in ADHD hypnosis
ADHD hypnosis draws on many techniques, and sessions are tailored to you. Depending on what you need, they can include:
- working on the beliefs and stories built up over years of struggling
- positive suggestion to build confidence and self-belief
- metaphor and imagery tailored to your preferences
- working with the part of you that feels overwhelmed or self-critical
- releasing tension held in the body
- practising ways to respond to stressful situations
- rehearsing a simple cue for pausing or starting a task
- picturing yourself following through on plans
- rehearsing situations you find hard, where helpful
Sessions can be kept varied and engaging, which suits many people with ADHD.
Working with a hypnotherapist for ADHD
At your first appointment, we discuss how daily life feels, the concerns you want help with and your current care. I explain the approach and its role so we can agree suitable goals. This consultation is not an ADHD diagnostic assessment.
The first session includes hypnosis, so the work begins straight away. My approach is solution-focused, so sessions concentrate on what you want and the progress you are making.
What happens in an ADHD hypnotherapy session
Each session after the first starts with a short conversation about what has gone well since we last spoke. Most of the session is hypnosis, using the techniques that suit you.
After each session, you receive a personalised recording to use between appointments. We can agree a realistic time for practice. Listen only where it is safe to relax, never while driving or operating machinery.

I have been on quite the journey with Susannah. For so many years so many aspects of my life seemed to be causing me anxiety and anger, making me too exhausted to complete simple, everyday tasks, that seemed straightforward to other people. I couldn’t imagine things would improve without months of therapy at least. Working with Susannah however made me understand that it was my perception of my life rather than the events of my life that needed addressing, and this made finding solutions so much more manageable. Right from the first session things started to improve, and as it turned out, in total I needed only five sessions.
Susannah has a gift for explaining complex functions of the brain in a super-accessible way, so that I now both understand what was going wrong and have developed strategies to support me in preventing the build-up of stress and anxiety in the future. I cannot think of an area of my life that has not been positively impacted by my time with Susannah and cannot recommend her highly enough.

I can’t even tell you exactly what has changed since my 3 hypnotherapy sessions, only that something in me has shifted, I feel better, more content, positive and lighter and I’m making better choices.
After the first session it felt like something in my brain moved, for the better. I was really sceptical going in to this, especially as the sessions were online, but it worked.
Would definitely recommend Susannah, the sessions aren’t cheap but was worth every penny to me.

I will be honest, I was sceptical about hypno previously but it’s been such a great experience.

What is ADHD?
ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, activity levels and impulse control. It is often described as inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive or a combination of the two.
In adults, ADHD often involves inner restlessness, distraction and difficulty getting organised. Some adults were not diagnosed as children. Each person has their own strengths and challenges; you do not have to fit a particular stereotype to seek support.
How ADHD can show up in adults
ADHD affects everyone differently. Common experiences include:
- losing focus, or getting so absorbed that hours disappear
- putting off tasks until the last minute
- losing track of time, keys or appointments
- restlessness and difficulty relaxing
- feeling overwhelmed by too many things at once
- strong emotions that rise quickly
- acting on impulse, then regretting it
- a busy mind that struggles to switch off at night
Many people work extremely hard to keep on top of things, which can be exhausting.
Hypnotherapy for ADHD, anxiety and overwhelm
Anxiety often goes hand in hand with ADHD. Worrying about forgetting things, missing deadlines or letting people down can keep the mind on high alert. The constant effort of keeping up adds to the stress.
A helpful metaphor is a stress bucket: everyday pressures add to the load until coping feels harder. Sessions aim to ease the anxiety and pressure you are carrying, helping you practise calmer responses alongside practical ADHD support.

Hypnotherapy for emotional regulation with ADHD
Many people with ADHD feel emotions quickly and intensely. Frustration can flare in seconds, and criticism or a sense of rejection can feel crushing, even when it is minor.
These reactions can feel automatic. Sessions can help you explore triggers and practise noticing tension, pausing and choosing a response. Emotional regulation is a goal we work towards, rather than a promised result.
Hypnotherapy for ADHD and self-esteem
Years of being called lazy, disorganised or careless can leave deep marks. Many adults with ADHD carry beliefs such as ‘I always mess things up’ or ‘I can’t be relied on’, even when they are capable.
We can work on familiar expectations and self-criticism, using imagery and therapeutic suggestions to practise a kinder response. The aim is to recognise your strengths and treat yourself with more understanding.
Explore confidence and self-esteem support.
Hypnotherapy for procrastination and getting started
For many people with ADHD, the hardest part of a task is starting it. Even simple jobs can feel blocked, and the longer they wait, the heavier they become, which adds guilt and stress.
Sessions can address the worry and self-criticism that add to the difficulty. Mental rehearsal can be paired with a simple first step or starting cue. ADHD-related difficulties with initiation also benefit from practical adjustments and appropriate specialist support.
Hypnosis for focus and concentration
Focus with ADHD tends to depend on interest and stress levels. When stress is high, attention scatters further, and when a task feels dull or overwhelming, it can be very hard to stay with it.
We can work on lowering stress and rehearsing habits that help you settle into a task. The goal is to support your everyday routine alongside ADHD care, with progress measured through the changes that matter to you.
Hypnotherapy for ADHD and sleep
Sleep problems are common with ADHD. Many people find their mind becomes most active just as they try to sleep. Others stay up late because the evening is the only time that feels their own.
Poor sleep can make coping harder the next day. Sessions can work on bedtime worry and winding down, and your recording can support practice. Persistent sleep problems, including possible medication effects, should also be discussed with your GP or ADHD clinician.

Hypnotherapy for impulsive habits
Impulsivity can show up as habits that are hard to shift, such as endless phone scrolling, impulsive spending, nail biting or interrupting others. These often give a quick hit of relief or stimulation, followed by regret.
We can explore what happens before an urge and rehearse a pause or alternative action. Practical boundaries, reminders and specialist help may also be useful, particularly if a habit is causing significant harm.
Who hypnotherapy for ADHD can help
Adults who may wish to discuss this support include:
- people recently diagnosed with ADHD
- adults waiting for an assessment
- those who have managed ADHD for years but feel worn out
- students facing exams and deadlines
- parents juggling family life alongside their own ADHD
- women whose symptoms have become harder to manage during perimenopause
- professionals who mask their struggles at work
You can enquire whether or not you take medication. We discuss suitability and how sessions fit with your wider support before beginning.
Hypnotherapy after a late ADHD diagnosis
Being diagnosed with ADHD as an adult can bring relief, along with grief for the years spent struggling without understanding why. Many people look back and see past difficulties in a new light.
Hypnotherapy after a late ADHD diagnosis works on the old beliefs and self-criticism that built up over those years. The aim is to build confidence in working with your brain.
ADHD, hypnosis and the subconscious mind
Knowing why you struggle does not always change how you feel. Years of criticism or feeling different can leave familiar expectations such as “I will get this wrong”, adding pressure to an already demanding day.
When I talk about the subconscious, I mean automatic reactions, expectations and habits. Hypnosis uses focused attention, imagery and therapeutic suggestions to practise responding differently. This is work on the additional stress around ADHD, rather than a claim that beliefs cause ADHD.
What hypnosis for ADHD feels like
Many people with ADHD worry that they will be too restless for hypnosis. Hypnosis involves focused attention and may feel like being absorbed in an activity. Wandering thoughts are normal, and you do not need a perfectly empty mind.
Hypnosis for ADHD is a clinical process, very different from stage hypnosis. Sessions can be adapted, and it is fine to move or fidget. You stay aware and in control throughout, and you may find hypnosis easier than you expected.
Is hypnotherapy for ADHD right for you?
Sessions may suit adults who want support with stress, anxiety, confidence and habits alongside their ADHD care. You can also discuss these concerns while awaiting assessment. We consider your needs and preferences, including how to make practice manageable.
If you think you may have ADHD, speak to your GP about an assessment. Hypnotherapy can be used alongside medication and other support, and any change to medication should be made with your doctor.
Choosing a hypnotherapist for ADHD
When choosing a hypnotherapist for ADHD, look for recognised qualifications and experience of working with anxiety, stress and confidence. It also helps to feel comfortable with the person you choose, and an initial consultation is a good chance to ask questions.
I hold the SQHP and HPD qualifications and have been practising as a clinical hypnotherapist since 2003.
The benefits of hypnotherapy for ADHD
Feeling calmer and more confident can make everyday challenges easier to approach. Goals we can work towards include:
- less anxiety and overwhelm
- calmer reactions to frustration and criticism
- getting started on tasks more easily
- better sleep
- a kinder inner voice
- more confidence in your abilities
- more choice over impulsive habits
- more energy for the things you enjoy
If you would like help with ADHD, contact me to find out more or book your initial consultation.
Research on hypnosis, ADHD and related anxiety
Research offers useful ways to understand the goals of hypnotherapy, from ADHD-related experiences to the anxiety that can accompany them.
Hypnotherapy and adult ADHD
A 2010 randomised study by Virta and colleagues compared nine adults receiving hypnotherapy with ten controls. More people in the hypnotherapy group improved on some self-report and independent symptom ratings. This small study provides an encouraging starting point for exploring how hypnosis may support adults with ADHD.
In practice, I focus on your own goals and review changes in everyday life, such as self-confidence, stress and the pressure around tasks.
Hypnosis for related anxiety
A 2019 meta-analysis of hypnosis for anxiety found benefits across 17 trials, with stronger effects when hypnosis was combined with other psychological approaches. This supports working on anxiety as a concern in its own right.
The anxiety research concerns anxiety relief; it is not evidence that hypnosis removes ADHD. NICE ADHD guidance describes how environmental adjustments, medication and ADHD-focused psychological support can fit an individual care plan.
ADHD hypnotherapy: frequently asked questions
Answers about adult ADHD, hypnosis, practical support and appointments in the City of London or online.
Understanding adult ADHD
What is ADHD in adults?
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect attention, activity levels and impulse control. In adults it may involve distractibility, restlessness and difficulty organising or finishing tasks. These experiences can have other causes too, so an ADHD diagnosis requires a specialist assessment rather than a symptom checklist alone.
Is ADD the same as ADHD?
ADD is an older term commonly used for difficulties with attention without obvious hyperactivity. Today this is usually described as ADHD with a predominantly inattentive presentation. An ADHD specialist can assess your pattern of symptoms and support needs.
Can ADHD be diagnosed for the first time in adulthood?
Yes. Some people reach adulthood without their ADHD being recognised. Assessment considers childhood experiences as well as current difficulties across different areas of life. A late diagnosis does not mean ADHD suddenly began in adulthood.
Is ADHD caused by stress or negative subconscious beliefs?
No. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition, not a failure of willpower or a result of negative thinking. Stress, anxiety and repeated criticism can add to the difficulties of living with ADHD. Hypnotherapy here focuses on those additional pressures, rather than claiming to remove the underlying condition.
How can I find out whether I have ADHD?
Speak to your GP if difficulties with attention, organisation or impulsivity affect your work, studies or relationships. They can discuss assessment and referral options. I do not diagnose ADHD; hypnotherapy sessions are not an ADHD assessment. Read the NHS guide to ADHD in adults.
Can ADHD and anxiety occur together?
Yes. Some adults experience both, and worry about missed deadlines or forgotten tasks can add to the strain. Anxiety can also affect concentration independently of ADHD. It is useful to understand both difficulties rather than assume that every symptom has the same cause.
Why can everyday tasks feel overwhelming with ADHD?
Planning, prioritising, remembering steps and starting a task can require considerable effort. Stress and fear of getting it wrong may add another layer. Sessions can explore that pressure alongside practical supports such as smaller steps, reminders and clearer routines.
Can I seek support while waiting for an ADHD assessment?
Yes. You can seek help with stress, anxiety and confidence while waiting, without assuming you have a confirmed diagnosis. We discuss your needs and any other care you receive. Hypnotherapy does not replace an assessment or guarantee a shorter route to specialist support.
Hypnotherapy, evidence and established ADHD care
Can hypnotherapy help adults with ADHD?
Hypnotherapy can be used as additional support for adults who want to work on stress, self-criticism, confidence and habits alongside their ADHD care. Sessions use focused attention, imagery and therapeutic suggestions around your own goals. The aim is to make everyday challenges feel more manageable; individual responses vary.
Can hypnosis cure ADHD?
No. Hypnotherapy should not be described as a cure for ADHD or a way to remove a neurodevelopmental condition. My aim is to support the aspects of daily life we agree to work on, such as managing worry, feeling less overwhelmed or developing a kinder inner voice.
What research is there on hypnotherapy for ADHD?
A 2010 randomised study involving 19 adults reported improvements on some symptom ratings after hypnotherapy. Research also explores hypnosis for related concerns: a 2019 meta-analysis found benefits for anxiety, particularly when combined with other psychological approaches. The anxiety findings relate to anxiety relief, rather than demonstrating an effect on ADHD itself.
What treatments are recommended for adult ADHD?
NICE guidance includes environmental adjustments, medication where indicated and ADHD-focused psychological support. Depending on the person’s needs, psychological treatment may include CBT and regular follow-up. Your ADHD clinician can help you choose an individual plan. See NICE guidance on ADHD management.
Can I have hypnotherapy while taking ADHD medication?
It may be suitable as additional support. Tell me about your medication, relevant health conditions and other treatment so we can discuss how sessions fit with your care. Medication decisions belong with your prescriber; do not change your dose or stop treatment because you are having hypnotherapy.
Can hypnotherapy replace ADHD medication?
Hypnotherapy is not a substitute for prescribed ADHD medication. Some adults do not take medication for various reasons, but that choice should be discussed with an appropriately qualified clinician. Sessions can address stress and confidence without promising the same effects as medication.
How does hypnotherapy differ from ADHD coaching or CBT?
Hypnotherapy uses focused attention, imagery and therapeutic suggestions. ADHD coaching commonly focuses on practical goals and strategies; CBT works with patterns of thinking and behaviour and can be adapted for ADHD. We can discuss how my work fits alongside support you already have, with clear goals for each approach.
Does hypnotherapy change the ADHD brain or dopamine levels?
It would be misleading to promise that sessions correct dopamine levels or rewire ADHD away. Hypnosis is used here to practise responses to stress, expectations and everyday situations. Improvements in confidence or wellbeing should not be confused with proof that the underlying condition has changed.
Stress, sleep, focus and everyday goals
Can hypnotherapy help with ADHD-related anxiety and overwhelm?
We can work on worries, self-criticism and the feeling of constantly falling behind. Sessions may include relaxation, imagery and rehearsal of manageable responses to stressful situations. The aim is to reduce additional pressure, with progress reviewed around your own goals. You can also read about hypnotherapy for anxiety.
Can hypnotherapy help with procrastination and starting tasks?
We can explore the worry, perfectionism or shame that sometimes adds to difficulty getting started. Mental rehearsal can be paired with a small practical first step. ADHD-related difficulties with initiation are not simply negative beliefs, so routines, adjustments and specialist support may still be needed.
Can hypnosis improve focus and concentration with ADHD?
Sessions can focus on lowering stress and rehearsing habits that support settling into a task. We might practise a simple starting cue or breaking an overwhelming task into a first step. We review specific everyday goals rather than promise a general increase in attention or a change to ADHD itself.
Can hypnotherapy help with sleep when my mind will not switch off?
We can work on bedtime worry and the pressure to fall asleep. A personalised recording may support a wind-down routine. Persistent sleep problems should also be discussed with your GP or ADHD clinician, including whether medication timing or another sleep difficulty is relevant. See my insomnia page.
Can hypnotherapy support emotional regulation with ADHD?
Sessions can explore triggers, practise noticing rising tension and rehearse a pause before responding. This is work towards a goal rather than a guarantee that intense emotions will disappear. If reactions are severe or create significant difficulties, discuss them with your ADHD or mental health clinician too.
Can you help with self-esteem after a late ADHD diagnosis?
We can explore the effect of years of criticism or feeling different, and work towards a more understanding view of yourself. A diagnosis can bring mixed feelings, including relief and sadness. You do not have to force a positive interpretation of every past experience. Read about confidence and self-esteem.
Can hypnotherapy help with impulsive scrolling or spending?
We can examine the situations, feelings and habits around an urge and rehearse a pause or alternative response. Practical safeguards can be important too. Serious financial harm, addiction or risky behaviour needs appropriate specialist support; hypnotherapy alone should not be relied on to manage it.
Can ADHD hypnotherapy help with work or study stress?
Sessions can focus on the pressure around deadlines, asking for help or starting a difficult task. We can rehearse manageable steps alongside practical changes to your environment. Hypnotherapy does not replace workplace or study adjustments, organisational tools or specialist ADHD support.
Feeling comfortable with hypnosis
Can I be hypnotised if I am easily distracted?
Having ADHD does not automatically mean you cannot engage with hypnosis. Experiences vary, and wandering thoughts are not a failure. We can discuss what helps you stay comfortable and adapt the pace or use of imagery. There is no need to achieve a perfectly empty mind.
Do I have to sit completely still during hypnosis?
No. You can change position or fidget if that helps you feel comfortable. Let me know about sensory preferences or anything that makes stillness difficult. We agree a way of working that feels manageable for you.
Will I lose control during ADHD hypnosis?
Hypnosis is collaborative. You can speak, move or ask to stop, and you do not have to accept suggestions that do not suit you. Clinical sessions are different from stage hypnosis; there is no performance or test to pass.
What if I do not feel deeply relaxed?
Deep relaxation is not a requirement for having a useful conversation or beginning the work. Hypnosis can feel like focused attention, absorption or ordinary relaxation, and experiences differ. Tell me how it feels so we can adapt rather than judge your response.
Will you try to change my personality?
No. The goals are yours. We focus on what makes life harder and what you would like to do with greater ease, while respecting your preferences and strengths. You do not need to become a different person or hide the way your mind works.
Do I need to uncover a hidden memory or cause?
No. We can work with present concerns without trying to recover forgotten memories. ADHD is not explained by a hidden subconscious event, and memories arising during hypnosis are not necessarily accurate. The focus is on your current needs and agreed goals.
Who is the best hypnotherapist for ADHD in London?
There is no single best fit for everyone. Look for recognised qualifications, professional registration, clear boundaries and an honest explanation of the evidence. Rapport matters. You can try my free relaxation audio to hear my voice or contact me before deciding whether to book.
Is this service for adults or children with ADHD?
This page describes my work with adults. It should not be taken as an offer of ADHD assessment or treatment for children. For a child or young person, seek advice from their GP and an appropriately qualified children’s ADHD service about suitable support.

How much does ADHD hypnotherapy cost?
Sessions cost £198, including VAT, and last approximately 50 minutes. The first appointment includes hypnosis as well as the consultation. You receive a personalised session recording for practice. See full fees and appointment information.
What happens at my first appointment?

How many sessions will I need?
There is no fixed number that suits everyone. We agree a starting plan and review whether the work is helping your chosen goals, such as less self-criticism or a more manageable bedtime routine. If progress is limited, we can discuss changing the approach or seeking other support.
