What hypnotherapy for perfectionism can help with

Perfectionism can help you achieve a great deal, yet it often comes at a cost to your wellbeing. Hypnotherapy for perfectionism and fear of failure can help with:

  • high standards that keep rising
  • harsh self-criticism
  • fear of making mistakes
  • fear of failure or judgement
  • putting off tasks until you can do them perfectly
  • overworking and struggling to switch off
  • finding it hard to delegate
  • feeling like an imposter
  • overlooking your successes

It aims to help you feel confident, calm and proud of what you achieve.

How hypnotherapy for perfectionism works

We start with the situations that create pressure and what you would like to feel or do differently. That might mean sending an email without repeated checking, finishing a creative project or applying for an opportunity you have been avoiding.

During hypnosis, relaxation, imagery and tailored suggestions support work on self-critical thoughts and anxious expectations. We explore beliefs such as “a mistake means I am not capable” and practise more flexible, encouraging responses. The goal is to keep your ambition while making progress feel less pressured.

Working with a hypnotherapist for perfectionism

Working with a hypnotherapist for perfectionism starts with an initial consultation. In this first session, we talk about where perfectionism shows up in your life and what you would like to change.

I also explain how stress and the subconscious mind can drive perfectionism and fear of failure. The first session includes hypnosis, so the work begins straight away.

My approach is solution-focused, so we concentrate on how you want to feel and build on the progress you make.

What happens in a perfectionism hypnotherapy session

Each session after the first starts with a conversation about what has gone well and the situations you want help with. Perfectionists often overlook progress, so noticing useful changes is part of the work. The hypnosis is tailored to your current goals.

You receive a personalised recording of your session to practise between appointments. Listen in a safe, comfortable place where you can relax fully, never while driving or doing anything that needs your attention.

My appointment with susannah has gone very very well, I have now been off the weed habit for over a month now, she has taken away my want to smoke it and some of the issues that go with it when you stop smoking it, I cannot thank this lady enough for giving me a new start, the voice notes that you will get after your appointment help so much, I listen to them every night before bed, now I only need to listen to them every now and then, not once have I wanted to go and get some (w) and it is all down to the appointment I had with susannah, highly recommend if you have the problem that I had, tried to give up myself but always gave in to it, I have a new life now and getting a lot done, sleeping is good and have saved a lot of money not smoking it, thinking more clearly now too, I’m so please as it’s been a habit of mine for many many years, I couldn’t have done this without her help and I’m so grateful, she is there if you need extra help too x

I’ve been working with Susannah for several months to work on my insomnia issues. After a few sessions we discovered I was also mildly depressed and we have been working together to try and fix the issues I was experiencing. In just 6 weeks I’ve gone from a fragment of myself to an inspired, vibrant person again and I’m so thrilled with the results. Susannah’s hypnotherapy sessions are beautiful and she really works with you to become better. Highly recommend her to anyone!

Highly recommended. It is very easy to communicate with Susannah and Susannah transmits positive vibes. Clearly Susannah focus is the well being of her patients. I gave up vaping in one session, no craving and no need to substitute by something else. This helps me to open a new chapter in my life without the servitude of smoking/vaping. 100% success as far as I am concerned. Would turn to Susannah again for what ever my needs are in the future.

I have been on quite the journey with Susannah. For so many years so many aspects of my life seemed to be causing me anxiety and anger, making me too exhausted to complete simple, everyday tasks, that seemed straightforward to other people. I couldn’t imagine things would improve without months of therapy at least. Working with Susannah however made me understand that it was my perception of my life rather than the events of my life that needed addressing, and this made finding solutions so much more manageable. Right from the first session things started to improve, and as it turned out, in total I needed only five sessions.Susannah has a gift for explaining complex functions of the brain in a super-accessible way, so that I now both understand what was going wrong and have developed strategies to support me in preventing the build-up of stress and anxiety in the future. I cannot think of an area of my life that has not been positively impacted by my time with Susannah and cannot recommend her highly enough.

I would like to start my review with thanking Susannah. I was sceptical, but went in with an open mind. I had one session of hypnosis to help quit smoking. I was a person that could stop and start but I wanted to quit for good. My session was at the beginning of Feb and so far so good. I feel a lot better health wise also helped motivate me to consistently go to the gym and generally take better care of myself. If your thinking about doing it, go for it, best decision I’ve made.

I got in touch with Susannah after yet another flight that made me feel sick and traumatised. Living overseas is great until you begin to have a fear or flying which impacts your ability to travel with your husband and also for work. Since spending time with Susannah i have been able to fly a total of 4 times in the last 2 weeks and havent gotten upset or fearful like i used too once – im now able to fly and the worst thing that happens is i get bored!! 🙂 I cant thank Susannah enough for helping me with this fear! Also, and i think no coincidence, i am far calmer in my day to day life. I absolutely never thought id be able to get off of a plane and go in to the office, instead of needing a sleep and a drink to get through it!!! Absolutely changed my life – long may it continue.

I’m a 33yo woman. I’ve struggled most of my life with low mood/depression and anxiety. I came to Susannah looking for help in changing my unhealthy habits and mindset. I can’t even tell you exactly what has changed since my 3 hypnotherapy sessions, only that something in me has shifted, I feel better, more content, positive and lighter and I’m making better choices. After the first session it felt like something in my brain moved, for the better. I was really sceptical going in to this, especially as the sessions were online, but it worked. Would definitely recommend Susannah, the sessions aren’t cheap but was worth every penny to me.

Can’t recommend Susannah enough! 3 months down and I’ve not touched a vape Or even thought about it. I will be honest, I was sceptical about hypno previously but it’s been such a great experience. My life has changed so positively since that session.

I recently had 3 sessions of hypnotherapy with Susannah to help with a fear of flying that had been causing me anxiety, and tainting my experience of travel and holidays for many years. This was my first experience of hypnotherapy, and it was an extremely positive and beneficial one, as I have since been on multiple flights without that old anxiety, and free of the accompanying tension and fear. This is entirely down to Susannah’s calming, patient manner and extremely insightful techniques. I can’t recommend her services highly enough. Thank you so so much Susannah!

What is perfectionism?

Perfectionism is a need to get things exactly right, often with harsh self-criticism when they fall short. It can affect work, studies, appearance, relationships and home life.

High standards can be healthy and motivating. With perfectionism, the standards keep rising, and anything short of perfect can feel like failure. Hypnotherapy for perfectionism aims to help you keep the drive to do well while feeling calmer about the outcome.

Signs of perfectionism

Common signs of perfectionism include:

  • checking and rechecking your work
  • spending far longer on tasks than they need
  • redoing work that others would see as finished
  • all-or-nothing thinking
  • feeling anxious or defensive about feedback
  • comparing yourself with others
  • going over mistakes again and again
  • feeling guilty when you rest

If several of these sound familiar, perfectionism hypnotherapy may help.

Hypnotherapy for fear of failure

Fear of failure can stop you applying for a new job, starting a business or trying something new. For some people, it means avoiding challenges altogether. For others, it means working twice as hard to make sure nothing goes wrong.

When the fear is intense, it is sometimes called atychiphobia. Hypnotherapy for fear of failure aims to calm this fear at a subconscious level, so you can take on challenges with confidence. It can also help you see setbacks as part of learning.

Where perfectionism comes from

Perfectionism can develop through a combination of temperament, experiences and expectations. You may have learned to associate praise with achievement, felt criticised for mistakes or become used to being the person who gets everything right.

Competitive workplaces, education and social comparison can add to that pressure. We can work with the patterns affecting you now without needing to identify one hidden cause or recover a forgotten memory.

Hypnotherapy for self-criticism

Many perfectionists have a harsh inner critic. It points out every flaw and replays mistakes long after they have happened. You might say things to yourself that you would find hurtful from anyone else.

Hypnotherapy for self-criticism aims to calm the inner critic, so you can treat yourself with the kindness you show others. A kinder inner voice can also make it easier to learn from mistakes and move on.

Hypnosis for fear of making mistakes

Fear of making mistakes can make simple tasks feel high-stakes. You might reread emails many times or freeze when asked a question in a meeting.

Mistakes are a normal part of learning, yet the subconscious can treat them as a threat. Hypnosis for fear of making mistakes aims to help you feel calm, so you can act with confidence and recover quickly from slip-ups.

Hypnosis for fear of judgement

For many perfectionists, the biggest fear is what others will think. You might worry about looking foolish or letting people down.

Hypnosis for fear of judgement aims to help you feel secure, so you can speak up and share your work with confidence.

Read more about hypnotherapy for social anxiety.

Hypnotherapy for perfectionism at work

At work, perfectionism can mean long hours and difficulty delegating. Tasks can overrun as you polish them again and again. Some people redo colleagues' work, or hold back from putting themselves forward for promotion.

Perfectionism often shows up in high achievers, including managers, directors and CEOs. Hypnotherapy for perfectionism at work aims to help you delegate with confidence and feel proud of what you deliver.

Read more about public speaking hypnotherapy.

Perfectionism and imposter feelings

Many perfectionists feel like a fraud, however much they achieve. Success can feel like luck, and praise can be hard to accept.

Hypnotherapy aims to help you recognise your strengths and own your achievements. My page on confidence and self-esteem has more on imposter syndrome.

Read more about confidence and self-esteem.

Perfectionism and procrastination

Perfectionism and procrastination often go together. If something has to be perfect, starting it can feel overwhelming, so it gets put off.

Some people wait for the right moment or the right mood, then rush to finish at the last minute. In hypnosis, we can rehearse beginning with an imperfect first step, allowing a draft to develop and recognising steady progress.

Perfectionism, stress and burnout

When every task feels important and nothing seems finished, pressure can build until it becomes difficult to switch off. You may lie awake reviewing the day, keep working through tiredness or feel guilty about taking a break.

In solution-focused work, the “stress bucket” is a useful metaphor for accumulated pressure. Sessions support relaxation and a more balanced response to expectations, so there is room for rest as well as achievement. Persistent exhaustion or low mood is also worth discussing with your GP.

Read more about support with stress.

How perfectionism affects daily life

Perfectionism can affect far more than work. Emails, hosting friends, getting ready to go out or tidying the house can all start to feel like a test.

It can be hard to relax or enjoy good results, as your focus moves straight to the next goal. Some people also hold others to the same high standards, which can cause tension in relationships.

Who perfectionism hypnotherapy can help

Perfectionism hypnotherapy can help many different people, including:

  • high achievers who feel constant pressure
  • professionals who find it hard to delegate
  • students facing exams or deadlines
  • creatives who struggle to finish or share their work
  • people who feel like an imposter at work
  • those who avoid new challenges in case they fail
  • parents who feel they have to get everything right
  • anyone with a harsh inner critic

It can help whether perfectionism affects your work, your home life or both.

The beliefs behind perfectionism and fear of failure

Perfectionism can be shaped by beliefs such as “if it is not perfect, it is a failure”, “I am only as good as my results” or “people will judge me if I get it wrong”. Repeated often enough, these thoughts can begin to feel like facts.

We explore how these expectations affect you and use hypnosis to practise a steadier sense of self-worth. You can learn from feedback, value your effort and recognise strengths without treating each outcome as a verdict on who you are.

Perfectionism, hypnosis and the subconscious mind

The word subconscious is often used to describe learned responses that feel automatic. A mistake, deadline or piece of feedback may trigger tension before you have had time to consider what it really means.

Hypnosis uses focused attention, imagery and therapeutic suggestions to work with these patterns. We can rehearse feeling more settled when something is unfinished, responding constructively to feedback and separating your worth from one result.

What hypnosis for perfectionism feels like

Hypnosis is a natural, relaxed state, similar to daydreaming or the moment before sleep. You stay aware of what is happening and in control throughout.

Hypnosis for perfectionism is a clinical process, very different from stage hypnosis. There is no right or wrong way to experience it, which many perfectionists find a relief. You simply relax and listen.

Techniques used in hypnotherapy for perfectionism and fear of failure

Hypnotherapy for perfectionism draws on many techniques, tailored to you. Depending on what you need, sessions can include:

  • lowering overall stress and anxiety
  • working on the beliefs behind perfectionism and fear of failure
  • positive suggestion to build self-worth and confidence
  • calming the inner critic
  • taking the emotional charge out of past criticism or setbacks
  • building calm responses to mistakes and feedback
  • deep relaxation to help you switch off
  • self-hypnosis to use before a big task or deadline
  • rehearsing challenges such as presentations or exams, where helpful

Each session uses the techniques that suit you at that stage.

Is hypnotherapy for perfectionism and fear of failure right for you?

Hypnotherapy for perfectionism and fear of failure can suit anyone whose high standards have started to feel like pressure. It tends to work best when you are ready to make changes and listen to the personalised recording between sessions.

It can help whether you want to feel calmer at work or have the confidence to try something new.

Choosing a hypnotherapist for perfectionism

When choosing a hypnotherapist for perfectionism or fear of failure, look for recognised qualifications and experience of working with anxiety and self-esteem. It also helps to feel comfortable with the person you choose, and an initial consultation is a good chance to ask questions.

I hold the SQHP and HPD qualifications and have been practising as a clinical hypnotherapist since 2003.

The benefits of hypnotherapy for perfectionism and fear of failure

Hypnotherapy for perfectionism aims to help you do your best work and feel good about it. Benefits can include:

  • feeling calmer about mistakes and setbacks
  • a kinder, more encouraging inner voice
  • confidence to try new things
  • finishing tasks and moving on
  • delegating with ease
  • enjoying your achievements
  • better sleep and more time to relax
  • a steady sense of your own worth

If you would like help with perfectionism or fear of failure, contact me to find out more or book your initial consultation.

Research supporting work on anxiety and stress

A 2019 meta-analysis by Valentine and colleagues found that hypnosis reduced anxiety across the studies reviewed, with stronger effects when combined with other psychological interventions. Anxiety management is relevant when mistakes, criticism or uncertain outcomes feel threatening.

In a 2020 randomised trial by Fisch and colleagues, a group hypnosis programme with home recordings and educational material reduced perceived stress compared with educational material alone. These findings concern anxiety and stress, two areas we can address when perfectionism leaves you feeling under pressure.

Perfectionism and fear of failure: frequently asked questions

Answers about self-criticism, high standards, anxiety, hypnosis and appointments in London or online.

Understanding perfectionism and fear of failure

What is perfectionism?

Perfectionism is a pattern of demanding very high standards and judging yourself harshly when you feel you have fallen short. It can affect work, study, appearance, relationships and everyday decisions. The difficulty is often not caring about quality, but feeling that anything less than perfect says something negative about your worth.

What is the difference between high standards and perfectionism?

Healthy standards can guide your effort while leaving room for mistakes, rest and changing priorities. Perfectionism tends to make standards rigid and achievements hard to enjoy. We can work on keeping the parts of ambition you value while reducing the fear and self-criticism that turn ordinary tasks into tests.

What are common signs of perfectionism?

Common signs include repeatedly checking work, delaying tasks until you can do them perfectly, struggling to delegate and replaying mistakes. You may dismiss praise, compare yourself with others or feel guilty when resting. What matters is whether these patterns cost you time, confidence, sleep or enjoyment.

What is fear of failure or atychiphobia?

Fear of failure is anxiety about getting something wrong, falling short or what an outcome might mean about you. An intense fear is sometimes called atychiphobia. It can lead to avoiding opportunities or working excessively to prevent mistakes. Sessions focus on your experiences and goals rather than requiring a particular label.

Why do I feel like a failure even when I achieve a lot?

If your standards keep moving, success can feel temporary or never quite enough. You may notice the one flaw and discount everything that went well. We can explore this habit and practise recognising effort, ability and progress without making your self-worth depend on the next achievement.

Can perfectionism be linked with anxiety?

Yes. Worry about mistakes, judgement or uncertainty can lead to checking, overpreparing and avoiding challenges. Those habits may briefly reduce worry while keeping pressure high. Hypnotherapy can support work on the anxious expectations and self-critical responses behind the pattern, together with goals for daily life.

Is perfectionism the same as OCD?

No. Perfectionism and OCD can overlap, but they are not the same. OCD involves obsessions and compulsions that can be distressing and time-consuming. If intrusive thoughts or rituals are disrupting your life, discuss them with a qualified healthcare professional so you receive suitable assessment and support.

Where does perfectionism come from?

There is no single explanation. Temperament, family expectations, school, work and experiences of praise or criticism can all play a part. You may have learned to feel safer when you get everything right. We can focus on the patterns affecting you now without needing to identify one cause.

Work, study and everyday life

Can hypnotherapy help with perfectionism at work?

Hypnotherapy can support work on the anxiety and beliefs that make tasks feel high-stakes. We can rehearse finishing a piece of work, accepting reasonable feedback or delegating without constant checking. Your goals might include clearer boundaries, more sustainable working hours and greater confidence in what you deliver.

Can you help high achievers who struggle to switch off?

Yes. You may be doing well externally while feeling constantly behind or responsible for everything. Sessions can focus on the pressure to keep proving yourself, guilt about rest and difficulty recognising when enough is enough. We work towards a more sustainable relationship with achievement.

Can hypnotherapy help with perfectionism and procrastination?

It can help address the fear and self-criticism that make starting feel difficult. During hypnosis, we can rehearse beginning with a manageable first step, allowing a rough draft and staying with a task without needing immediate certainty. The focus is on progress that feels possible rather than another demanding productivity rule.

Why do I spend so long checking emails or small tasks?

Repeated checking may be an attempt to avoid criticism, embarrassment or uncertainty. The relief can be short-lived, leading you to check again. We explore what you fear would happen and practise more proportionate responses. Time-consuming rituals or intrusive thoughts also deserve an assessment for appropriate support.

Can you help with fear of applying for jobs or promotion?

Yes. Sessions can focus on worries about rejection, being exposed as inadequate or disappointing others. Mental rehearsal and tailored suggestions can support a calmer approach to applications, interviews and new responsibilities. We can also work on separating the outcome of one application from your overall ability and worth.

Can hypnotherapy help students with exam perfectionism?

Sessions can address pressure to achieve top marks, fear of disappointing others and harsh self-talk around study. We can rehearse a calmer approach to preparation and exams, while making room for breaks and sleep. Contact me to discuss the student’s age and circumstances so we can consider suitable support.

Can you help creatives who struggle to finish or share their work?

Yes. We can explore the judgement you anticipate and the belief that a piece of work must represent everything you are capable of. Hypnosis can include rehearsal of finishing, sharing and receiving feedback with greater steadiness. The aim is to make space for creativity, learning and enjoyment.

Can perfectionism affect relationships and parenting?

Yes. Feeling responsible for getting everything right can make it difficult to relax, ask for help or accept different approaches. You may be just as demanding of yourself at home as at work. Sessions can focus on realistic expectations, communication and a kinder response when life is unpredictable.

Self-criticism, judgement and confidence

Can hypnosis help with a harsh inner critic?

Hypnosis can support work on the self-critical thoughts that have become familiar and automatic. We can practise more balanced, encouraging ways of responding to mistakes and effort. A kinder inner voice can still help you take responsibility and learn; it does not mean ignoring what matters.

Will letting go of perfectionism make me lazy?

The work is about making your standards flexible and sustainable while keeping the goals you value. You can care about quality without using fear or self-punishment as your main motivation. We explore what helps you work well and what adds pressure without improving the result.

Can hypnotherapy help with fear of making mistakes?

Sessions can focus on what a mistake has come to mean to you, such as rejection, embarrassment or proof that you are not capable. During hypnosis, we can rehearse a calmer response and the ability to recover, correct and continue. Small practical steps can help you use that response in daily life.

Can you help with fear of judgement or criticism?

Yes. We can work on the anxious predictions that make other people’s opinions feel threatening. Hypnosis can involve rehearsing feedback, speaking up or sharing work while keeping a steadier sense of yourself. We also explore the difference between useful feedback and unfair or unkind criticism.

Can perfectionism contribute to imposter feelings?

Yes. When you believe you must know everything or never make mistakes, ordinary uncertainty can feel like evidence that you do not belong. You may attribute success to luck while taking setbacks personally. Sessions can help you recognise your strengths and approach learning without treating it as exposure.

Why do I keep replaying mistakes?

Replaying can feel like a way to prevent the same thing happening again, but it may keep the embarrassment or anxiety active. We can explore what you have already learned and practise bringing attention back to the present. Hypnosis can support a less punishing response to an event that has passed.

Can hypnotherapy help me accept compliments and enjoy success?

We can work on the tendency to dismiss praise, focus on flaws or move immediately to the next goal. Suggestions and imagery can support recognising your effort and allowing satisfaction. You do not need to feel outstanding all the time to value what you have achieved.

Can you help with guilt about rest and setting boundaries?

Yes. If your worth feels tied to being useful or productive, rest can bring guilt. Sessions can explore those expectations and rehearse saying no, asking for help or ending work at a reasonable time. The aim is to make room for your needs alongside your commitments.

Hypnotherapy and the sessions

How does hypnotherapy for perfectionism work?

We identify the situations where pressure, avoidance or self-criticism show up and agree what you want to change. Hypnosis uses focused attention, relaxation, imagery and tailored suggestions to work with those responses. The sessions can include mental rehearsal of challenges and a more balanced relationship with standards and self-worth.

How does hypnosis work with subconscious habits?

Subconscious is a useful word for learned reactions that feel automatic, such as tensing when you receive feedback. Hypnosis gives you a focused setting to explore those associations and practise different responses. We work with your current experience rather than assuming there must be a hidden memory behind it.

What does hypnosis for perfectionism feel like?

Hypnosis can feel like relaxed, absorbed attention, with your focus on my voice or the images we use. There is no perfect way to experience it. You can communicate and take part at a pace that feels comfortable, and we discuss the approach before beginning.

What if I worry about doing hypnosis correctly?

That worry is welcome in the session. You do not need to produce a particular feeling, picture everything vividly or empty your mind. We can discuss what you notice and adapt the approach. Allowing yourself to engage without grading the experience can itself be a useful theme.

Do I need to revisit difficult childhood experiences?

You can discuss relevant experiences if you wish, but you do not have to give a detailed account of everything that happened. We can focus on present-day patterns, the beliefs you want to change and how you want to feel. The approach is agreed with you and guided by your goals.

How many sessions will I need for perfectionism or fear of failure?

We discuss a plan after understanding how the pattern affects you and what you want to change. We review progress together, using practical goals such as starting tasks more easily, finishing work or feeling less distressed by mistakes. Contact me to talk through your circumstances and possible next steps.

Do I receive a personalised hypnosis recording?

Yes. You receive a personalised recording of your session to listen to between appointments. It supports practice with the relaxation, imagery and suggestions we have used together. Listen somewhere safe and comfortable, never while driving or doing anything that requires alertness.

Is there research supporting hypnosis for anxiety and stress?

Research supports hypnosis for anxiety and stress, which can be important parts of perfectionism. A 2019 meta-analysis found reduced anxiety across the studies reviewed. A 2020 randomised trial found reduced perceived stress with a group hypnosis programme. The research section links to these studies and describes what they examined.
