What hypnotherapy for toilet anxiety and shy bladder can help with

Toilet anxiety is common, but few people talk about it. Hypnotherapy for shy bladder and toilet anxiety can help with:

  • difficulty peeing when others are nearby
  • using urinals or busy public toilets
  • fear of being heard, seen or judged
  • difficulty opening your bowels away from home
  • needing to go 'just in case'
  • worry about finding a toilet when you are out
  • anxiety about giving a urine sample
  • avoiding travel, events or staying over

It aims to help you feel relaxed and confident wherever you are.

How hypnotherapy for shy bladder works

We begin with the situations you find difficult and what you would like to do more freely, such as using a toilet at work, taking a train or staying with a partner. We explore the worry, self-consciousness and pressure around those moments.

During hypnosis, relaxation, imagery and therapeutic suggestions support work on the anxiety. Mental rehearsal can help you picture approaching everyday situations more calmly. Where appropriate, this can sit alongside CBT, professionally guided graduated exposure and medical care.

Working with a hypnotherapist for shy bladder

Working with a hypnotherapist for shy bladder starts with an initial consultation. In this first session, we talk about the situations you find hardest and what you would like to be able to do.

I also explain how anxiety and the subconscious mind affect the body. The first session includes hypnosis, so the work begins straight away.

My approach is solution-focused, so we concentrate on your goals and build on the progress you make.

What happens in a toilet anxiety hypnotherapy session

We begin with a conversation about your experiences since the previous appointment, including situations that felt easier and any worries you want to work on. The hypnosis is shaped around your current goals.

You receive a personalised recording of your session for practice between appointments. Listen somewhere safe and comfortable where you can give it your attention, never while driving, cycling or doing anything that requires alertness.

My appointment with susannah has gone very very well, I have now been off the weed habit for over a month now, she has taken away my want to smoke it and some of the issues that go with it when you stop smoking it, I cannot thank this lady enough for giving me a new start, the voice notes that you will get after your appointment help so much, I listen to them every night before bed, now I only need to listen to them every now and then, not once have I wanted to go and get some (w) and it is all down to the appointment I had with susannah, highly recommend if you have the problem that I had, tried to give up myself but always gave in to it, I have a new life now and getting a lot done, sleeping is good and have saved a lot of money not smoking it, thinking more clearly now too, I’m so please as it’s been a habit of mine for many many years, I couldn’t have done this without her help and I’m so grateful, she is there if you need extra help too x

I’ve been working with Susannah for several months to work on my insomnia issues. After a few sessions we discovered I was also mildly depressed and we have been working together to try and fix the issues I was experiencing. In just 6 weeks I’ve gone from a fragment of myself to an inspired, vibrant person again and I’m so thrilled with the results. Susannah’s hypnotherapy sessions are beautiful and she really works with you to become better. Highly recommend her to anyone!

Highly recommended. It is very easy to communicate with Susannah and Susannah transmits positive vibes. Clearly Susannah focus is the well being of her patients. I gave up vaping in one session, no craving and no need to substitute by something else. This helps me to open a new chapter in my life without the servitude of smoking/vaping. 100% success as far as I am concerned. Would turn to Susannah again for what ever my needs are in the future.

I have been on quite the journey with Susannah. For so many years so many aspects of my life seemed to be causing me anxiety and anger, making me too exhausted to complete simple, everyday tasks, that seemed straightforward to other people. I couldn’t imagine things would improve without months of therapy at least. Working with Susannah however made me understand that it was my perception of my life rather than the events of my life that needed addressing, and this made finding solutions so much more manageable. Right from the first session things started to improve, and as it turned out, in total I needed only five sessions.Susannah has a gift for explaining complex functions of the brain in a super-accessible way, so that I now both understand what was going wrong and have developed strategies to support me in preventing the build-up of stress and anxiety in the future. I cannot think of an area of my life that has not been positively impacted by my time with Susannah and cannot recommend her highly enough.

I would like to start my review with thanking Susannah. I was sceptical, but went in with an open mind. I had one session of hypnosis to help quit smoking. I was a person that could stop and start but I wanted to quit for good. My session was at the beginning of Feb and so far so good. I feel a lot better health wise also helped motivate me to consistently go to the gym and generally take better care of myself. If your thinking about doing it, go for it, best decision I’ve made.

I got in touch with Susannah after yet another flight that made me feel sick and traumatised. Living overseas is great until you begin to have a fear or flying which impacts your ability to travel with your husband and also for work. Since spending time with Susannah i have been able to fly a total of 4 times in the last 2 weeks and havent gotten upset or fearful like i used too once – im now able to fly and the worst thing that happens is i get bored!! 🙂 I cant thank Susannah enough for helping me with this fear! Also, and i think no coincidence, i am far calmer in my day to day life. I absolutely never thought id be able to get off of a plane and go in to the office, instead of needing a sleep and a drink to get through it!!! Absolutely changed my life – long may it continue.

I’m a 33yo woman. I’ve struggled most of my life with low mood/depression and anxiety. I came to Susannah looking for help in changing my unhealthy habits and mindset. I can’t even tell you exactly what has changed since my 3 hypnotherapy sessions, only that something in me has shifted, I feel better, more content, positive and lighter and I’m making better choices. After the first session it felt like something in my brain moved, for the better. I was really sceptical going in to this, especially as the sessions were online, but it worked. Would definitely recommend Susannah, the sessions aren’t cheap but was worth every penny to me.

Can’t recommend Susannah enough! 3 months down and I’ve not touched a vape Or even thought about it. I will be honest, I was sceptical about hypno previously but it’s been such a great experience. My life has changed so positively since that session.

I recently had 3 sessions of hypnotherapy with Susannah to help with a fear of flying that had been causing me anxiety, and tainting my experience of travel and holidays for many years. This was my first experience of hypnotherapy, and it was an extremely positive and beneficial one, as I have since been on multiple flights without that old anxiety, and free of the accompanying tension and fear. This is entirely down to Susannah’s calming, patient manner and extremely insightful techniques. I can’t recommend her services highly enough. Thank you so so much Susannah!

What is shy bladder (paruresis)?

Shy bladder, also called paruresis, describes difficulty passing urine when other people are nearby or you feel you might be heard or observed. It can affect people of any gender. You may find it easy to go at home but struggle in a busy public toilet, at work or when someone is waiting.

Anxiety can interfere with the relaxation and coordination involved in passing urine. Trying to force it can add to the pressure. We focus on the worry, self-consciousness and tension around these situations, alongside checking any physical symptoms with your GP.

What is shy bowel (parcopresis)?

Shy bowel, also called parcopresis, describes anxiety or difficulty opening your bowels when other people are nearby or when you are away from the privacy of home. You might worry about sounds, smells, taking too long or someone noticing.

Sessions can address the embarrassment and anticipation that make these situations difficult. Persistent constipation, pain or a change in bowel habits also deserves a medical assessment, so you receive the right support for both physical symptoms and anxiety.

Read more about IBS and gut-directed hypnotherapy.

Toilet anxiety hypnotherapy: see your GP first

Speak to your GP about difficulty passing urine, persistent urgency, constipation or new bowel symptoms before assuming anxiety is the cause. Infections, prostate or pelvic-floor problems, medicines and other physical conditions can contribute.

Seek urgent medical help immediately if you suddenly cannot pass urine, particularly with lower abdominal pain or swelling. Hypnotherapy appointments are for support with anxiety and do not replace assessment or treatment of urinary retention.

Common toilet anxiety triggers

Common triggers include:

  • queues or people waiting outside
  • urinals and toilets with gaps under the doors
  • bathrooms where you can be heard
  • toilets at work near colleagues
  • toilets on planes, trains or coaches
  • staying with friends, family or a new partner
  • giving a urine sample at the doctor's or for work
  • feeling rushed or watched

For many people, the fear is of being heard, judged or taking too long.

Hypnotherapy for shy bladder at work

Work can be one of the hardest places for shy bladder. Toilets near colleagues, busy breaks and long meetings can all add to the pressure. Drug or alcohol tests at work, where someone may be nearby, can feel especially daunting.

Some people drink as little as possible at work, or wait until they get home. Hypnotherapy for shy bladder at work aims to help you feel relaxed, so you can go when you need to.

Hypnosis for toilet anxiety when travelling

Travel can bring extra worry, from long car trips to flights, trains and festivals. You might worry about finding a toilet, using a busy one or being heard on a plane. Long queues at service stations or airports can make the worry worse.

Hypnosis for toilet anxiety when travelling aims to help you feel calm and prepared, so you can enjoy trips and holidays.

Hypnotherapy for going 'just in case'

Repeated trips to the toilet before leaving home, starting a meeting or travelling can become part of an anxiety routine. You may feel briefly reassured, only to start checking your sensations again.

We can work on the anxious predictions and reassurance-seeking behind the pattern. Any plan to change toilet habits should take account of your medical needs; bladder training or advice about urgency is best discussed with a qualified healthcare professional.

Safety behaviours that keep toilet anxiety going

You may cope by avoiding outings, restricting drinks, running a tap or waiting until a toilet is empty. Some strategies bring temporary relief but can leave you feeling increasingly dependent on particular conditions.

We can explore manageable ways to broaden your confidence without removing every coping strategy at once. Do not deliberately dehydrate yourself or hold urine to the point of pain. Follow any individual fluid or bladder-care advice from your healthcare professional.

How shy bladder affects daily life

Toilet anxiety can affect where you go and how long you stay. Some people avoid concerts, sport, festivals or long days out, or turn down invitations to stay over. Long meetings, school runs and days out with children can all need careful planning.

It can affect work, dating and relationships, and many people keep it secret because they feel embarrassed.

Read more about hypnotherapy for anxiety.

Who shy bladder hypnotherapy can help

Shy bladder hypnotherapy can help many different people, including:

  • men who find urinals difficult
  • women who struggle in busy public toilets
  • people with shy bowel
  • those who feel anxious at work or when travelling
  • people who need to give urine samples for work or medical tests
  • anyone who plans their day around toilets
  • people whose toilet anxiety affects dating or staying over

It can help whether your toilet anxiety started recently or has been with you for years.

The beliefs behind toilet anxiety

Thoughts such as “everyone will hear”, “people will think I am strange” or “I am taking too long” can make an ordinary bodily function feel like a performance. One difficult experience can also leave you expecting the same thing next time.

We explore those predictions compassionately and practise a less pressured response. The focus is on feeling more at ease, allowing privacy preferences and reconnecting with everyday activities you value.

Read more about support with social anxiety.

Shy bladder, hypnosis and the subconscious mind

The word subconscious is often used to describe learned responses that feel automatic. You may know you are safe and still notice tension as soon as someone enters a toilet or waits outside.

Hypnosis uses focused attention, imagery and tailored suggestions to explore those reactions and rehearse calmer responses. We work with your experience without assuming there is one hidden cause that must be uncovered.

What toilet anxiety hypnosis feels like

Hypnosis involves comfortable, focused attention and may feel deeply relaxing. You remain able to communicate, move and decide how you engage. We discuss the approach before starting and agree goals together.

Appointments are non-judgemental. You can explain your concerns in everyday language and share at a pace that feels comfortable. The work takes place in the consultation room or online; you are not expected to demonstrate using a toilet during hypnosis.

Techniques used in hypnosis for shy bladder

Sessions are tailored to your goals and may include:

  • relaxation to reduce general stress and tension
  • exploring predictions about being heard or judged
  • therapeutic suggestions for calm and confidence
  • mental rehearsal of work, travel and social situations
  • responding more kindly to an awkward experience
  • comfortable breathing without straining or breath-holding
  • self-hypnosis in a safe, quiet setting
  • agreeing small, practical steps alongside other support

We work at a manageable pace. There is no need to force urination, overfill your bladder or practise through pain.

Shy bladder hypnotherapy alongside other support

Support can combine several approaches. Your GP can assess physical symptoms and discuss referrals; CBT and graduated exposure address the anxiety and avoidance associated with shy bladder.

Hypnotherapy sessions focus on relaxation, anxious expectations and confidence. The UK Paruresis Trust also offers information and peer support for people living with shy bladder. You can discuss how these options fit together rather than feeling you have to manage alone.

Is hypnotherapy for shy bladder right for you?

You can enquire if anxiety about toilets limits your work, travel, social life or confidence. We can focus on one situation or a broader pattern of avoidance, while taking account of any medical advice you have received.

An initial conversation gives you space to ask questions and discuss a plan. We review the work together and agree practical goals that fit your circumstances.

Choosing a hypnotherapist for shy bladder and toilet anxiety

When choosing a hypnotherapist for shy bladder and toilet anxiety, look for recognised qualifications and experience of working with anxiety and phobias. It also helps to feel comfortable with the person you choose, as this can be a sensitive subject to talk about. An initial consultation is a good chance to ask questions.

I hold the SQHP and HPD qualifications and have been practising as a clinical hypnotherapist since 2003.

The benefits of hypnotherapy for shy bladder and toilet anxiety

Hypnotherapy for shy bladder aims to help you feel relaxed and confident wherever you are. Benefits can include:

  • feeling calm using public toilets
  • using toilets at work with ease
  • enjoying trips, events and holidays
  • staying over with friends, family or a partner
  • drinking normally throughout the day
  • giving urine samples calmly
  • trusting your body to go when you need to
  • more freedom in daily life

If you would like help with shy bladder or toilet anxiety, contact me to find out more or book your initial consultation.

Research and practical support for anxiety

A 2019 meta-analysis by Valentine and colleagues found that hypnosis reduced anxiety in the studies reviewed, with stronger effects when combined with other psychological interventions. This supports the anxiety-management element of sessions: relaxation and work on the worry surrounding toilet situations. The study examined anxiety rather than shy bladder specifically.

The UK Paruresis Trust describes practical support and a gradual approach to feared situations. Its information can help you understand shy bladder and explore peer support alongside your individual care. For physical symptoms, see the NIDDK guidance on urinary retention and speak to your GP.

Toilet anxiety and shy bladder hypnotherapy: frequently asked questions

Answers about paruresis, shy bowel, public toilets, travel and appointments in London or online.

Understanding toilet anxiety

What is toilet anxiety?

Toilet anxiety is worry about using a toilet, being heard or judged, or needing a toilet when one may not be available. It can affect work, journeys and social plans. Some people struggle to pass urine or open their bowels around others; others become preoccupied with finding a toilet or avoiding an accident.

What is shy bladder syndrome or paruresis?

Paruresis is difficulty passing urine in situations where other people are nearby or might hear or observe you. You may be able to go comfortably at home but feel blocked in a public toilet. A GP assessment is useful to check physical causes before treating the problem as anxiety-related.

Is shy bladder the same as toilet anxiety?

Shy bladder is one form of toilet anxiety, specifically involving difficulty passing urine around others. Toilet anxiety is a broader term that can include shy bowel, fear of accidents, discomfort using unfamiliar bathrooms and worry about access to toilets. We discuss your particular pattern rather than assuming every concern is the same.

What is shy bowel or parcopresis?

Parcopresis describes anxiety or difficulty opening your bowels when other people are nearby or you are away from home. Fear of sounds, smells or taking too long may be involved. Support can focus on the embarrassment and tension, while a GP assesses persistent constipation, pain or changes in bowel habits.

Can shy bladder affect women as well as men?

Yes. Shy bladder can affect people of any gender. Urinals may be a particular trigger for some men, while shared cubicles, quiet bathrooms or queues can be difficult for anyone. The relevant issue is how privacy, proximity and pressure affect you, rather than a particular type of toilet.

Why can I pee at home but struggle in public?

A familiar private bathroom may feel comfortable, while another person nearby makes you more self-conscious and tense. That change in anxiety can interfere with passing urine. This pattern is worth discussing with your GP, particularly if you also notice pain, a weak stream or difficulty going when alone.

Is toilet anxiety connected with social anxiety?

It can be. Worry about being heard, judged or noticed has similarities with social anxiety. Some people feel confident elsewhere and only struggle around toilets; others recognise the same fear of scrutiny in meetings, dating or public speaking. Sessions can focus on the situations and beliefs that matter to you.

Can toilet anxiety develop after an embarrassing experience?

An awkward experience, teasing or feeling rushed may contribute to anxious expectations, although there is not always a clear starting point. We can work with how the problem affects you now without needing to identify a single cause. You can discuss past experiences at a pace that feels comfortable.

Everyday situations and confidence

Can hypnotherapy help with shy bladder at work?

Hypnotherapy can support work on the anxiety, self-consciousness and pressure you feel around workplace toilets. We can rehearse approaching those situations more calmly and discuss manageable steps alongside other support. Practical arrangements, such as access to a quieter bathroom, may also be worth discussing confidentially at work.

Can you help with anxiety about using urinals?

Yes, sessions can focus on the fear of being observed, feeling rushed or not being able to go at a urinal. You do not need to prove yourself by choosing the hardest situation. We agree goals around comfort and everyday freedom, including any appropriate graduated practice with professional support.

What if I cannot go when someone is waiting outside?

Feeling that someone is waiting can turn using a toilet into a perceived deadline. We can work on predictions about taking too long, being judged or needing to perform. Mental rehearsal and a calmer response to those thoughts can support practical steps towards feeling less pressured.

Can hypnosis help with toilet anxiety on planes and trains?

Sessions can address the anticipation, limited privacy and worry about queues or access that make journeys difficult. We can rehearse a trip in manageable stages and focus on reducing the anxiety around it. Useful travel planning and any medical advice about bladder or bowel symptoms remain part of the picture.

Can you help with fear of needing the toilet during a car journey?

We can explore the predictions that make journeys feel difficult, such as being unable to stop or having an accident. The work can include calmer mental rehearsal and rebuilding confidence with manageable journeys. New urgency, leakage or bowel symptoms should also be assessed by your GP.

What if I avoid staying with friends or a partner?

Shared bathrooms can bring worries about being heard, smells or someone noticing how long you take. Sessions can focus on those expectations and the confidence to enjoy visits and relationships. We can agree small steps and discuss privacy needs without making the visit a test you have to pass.

Can hypnotherapy help with fear of being heard in the toilet?

We can work on the embarrassment and judgement you associate with ordinary bathroom sounds. Hypnosis offers space to rehearse a less self-critical, more relaxed response. The aim is to reduce the sense of threat and help you make choices more freely, rather than insisting that you abandon all privacy preferences.

Can you help with anxiety about giving a urine sample?

Sessions can address the pressure and anticipation around a medical or workplace urine sample. Tell the clinician or testing provider in advance that you have difficulty passing urine under observation, so they can explain available arrangements. Follow their instructions; do not force fluids or delay urgent medical care.

Why do I keep going to the toilet just in case?

Repeated toilet trips can become a way of seeking reassurance before leaving home, meetings or journeys. We can explore the worry behind the habit and practise a calmer response to uncertainty. Frequent urination can also have physical causes, so discuss it with your GP before changing your toilet routine.

Medical questions and other support

Should I see my GP before hypnotherapy for shy bladder?

Yes, discuss difficulty passing urine or persistent bowel symptoms with your GP so possible physical causes can be assessed. Anxiety and physical symptoms can coexist. Hypnotherapy can then focus on the emotional side of the problem alongside any medical advice or treatment you receive.

When is difficulty passing urine an emergency?

Seek urgent medical help immediately if you suddenly cannot pass urine, particularly with lower abdominal pain or swelling. Do not assume it is shy bladder or wait for a hypnotherapy appointment. Sudden urinary retention needs prompt medical assessment and treatment.

Could medicines or a physical condition cause these symptoms?

Yes. Medicines, infections, prostate problems, constipation and other conditions can affect passing urine. Persistent symptoms need a healthcare assessment, even if anxiety also plays a part. Tell your GP what you take, including over-the-counter medicines, and do not stop prescribed treatment on your own.

Is shy bladder the same as an overactive bladder?

No. Shy bladder describes difficulty passing urine in particular social situations. An overactive bladder usually involves urgency, often with frequency or leakage. They can overlap, and worry may accompany either. A healthcare professional can assess the symptoms and advise on the appropriate treatment.

Can toilet anxiety occur alongside IBS?

Yes. Bowel symptoms and worry about toilet access can influence one another. Someone with IBS may feel anxious about journeys, meetings or being away from home. We can discuss the anxiety and confidence aspects alongside appropriate medical care and whether gut-directed hypnotherapy is relevant to your needs.

Should I drink less to avoid public toilets?

Deliberately restricting fluids can affect your health and make daily life increasingly difficult to plan. Follow your healthcare professional’s advice about hydration, especially if you have a medical condition with individual fluid guidance. Sessions can focus on the worry that makes restricting drinks feel necessary.

Should I force myself to go or hold on until I can?

Do not strain, hold urine to the point of pain or deliberately overfill your bladder to test yourself. The aim is a more comfortable response, supported by appropriate care. If you cannot pass urine or develop significant pain, seek medical help rather than continuing a practice exercise.

Can hypnotherapy work alongside CBT or graduated exposure?

Hypnotherapy can focus on anxiety, relaxation and mental rehearsal alongside CBT or professionally guided graduated exposure. Exposure involves approaching feared situations in manageable steps rather than jumping into the hardest one. Tell each practitioner about the support you receive so the approaches can work towards compatible goals.

Hypnotherapy appointments and practice

How does hypnotherapy for toilet anxiety work?

We explore the situations that trigger worry and what you would like to do more freely. During hypnosis, focused attention, imagery and tailored suggestions support work on anxiety and self-consciousness. Goals may include approaching a workplace bathroom more calmly or enjoying a journey without so much anticipation.

What does hypnosis for shy bladder feel like?

Hypnosis often feels like comfortable, absorbed attention and can be deeply relaxing. You remain able to communicate, move and choose how to engage. We discuss the approach beforehand, and the suggestions are shaped around your goals rather than something being imposed on you.

Will I be asked to use a toilet during the session?

The appointment focuses on conversation, hypnosis and mental rehearsal in the consultation room or online. You are not expected to demonstrate using a toilet during hypnosis. Any practical steps between appointments are discussed in advance, with attention to your comfort and medical needs.

What if I feel too embarrassed to talk about it?

You can start with a simple description, such as finding public toilets difficult or avoiding trips because of toilet worries. You do not need technical terms or a detailed account straight away. Sessions are non-judgemental, and we can take time to understand the parts you want help with.

Will I need to revisit upsetting memories?

You can discuss relevant experiences if you wish, but you do not have to retell everything that has happened. My approach is guided by your goals and what feels manageable. We can focus on present-day expectations, confidence and practical situations without searching for a hidden memory.

How many sessions of shy bladder hypnotherapy will I need?

We discuss a plan after exploring your concerns and review it together as the work develops. A specific situation, such as a journey, may need a different focus from a longstanding pattern across daily life. Goals are based on meaningful changes in comfort, confidence and participation.

Do I receive a personalised hypnosis recording?

Yes, you receive a personalised recording of your session for use between appointments. It gives you a way to practise the relaxation and suggestions we have worked on together. Listen in a safe, quiet place, never while driving or doing anything that requires alertness.

Can I listen to the recording before a journey?

You can listen beforehand in a safe, comfortable place where you can relax fully. Do not play a hypnosis recording while driving, cycling or navigating a journey. We can also discuss brief, non-distracting ways to manage worry that fit your circumstances.
