People-pleasing and boundaries hypnotherapy in London and online

Do you say yes when you want to say no? Do you put everyone else's needs first, then feel drained, resentful or taken for granted? I help people explore the guilt, fears and subconscious beliefs that can contribute to people-pleasing, so they can set healthy boundaries, speak up with confidence and put themselves first when it counts.

Hello, I'm Susannah. I am a fully qualified hypnotherapist with 20+ years of experience, offering clinical hypnotherapy in the City of London, near Liverpool Street, and online. What hypnotherapy for people-pleasing can help with

People-pleasing can look like kindness from the outside, while leaving you exhausted on the inside. Hypnotherapy for people-pleasing can help with:

  • saying yes when you mean no
  • guilt when you put yourself first
  • fear of upsetting or disappointing people
  • over-apologising
  • taking on too much at work or at home
  • avoiding conflict at any cost
  • needing approval or reassurance
  • finding it hard to ask for help

It aims to help you feel confident, respected and comfortable putting yourself first.

How hypnotherapy for people-pleasing works

We begin with the situations you find difficult and what you would like to change, such as declining extra work, expressing an opinion or protecting time for rest. We explore the guilt, anxiety and expectations around those moments.

During hypnosis, therapeutic suggestions and mental rehearsal help you practise responding with greater calm and self-belief. We build on manageable changes between appointments, so the work connects with conversations and choices in everyday life.

Working with a hypnotherapist for people-pleasing

Your initial appointment gives us time to discuss where people-pleasing shows up, what you would like to feel differently about and any questions you have. A goal might be giving yourself time to answer, leaving work on time or expressing an honest preference.

I explain the approach and include hypnosis in this first appointment. Sessions are solution-focused: we concentrate on the changes that matter to you and build on the steps you make.

What happens in a people-pleasing hypnotherapy session

We begin by discussing your experiences since the previous appointment, including moments when a boundary felt easier or you noticed an old pattern. The hypnosis is then shaped around your current goals.

You receive a personalised recording of your session for agreed practice between appointments. Listen in a safe place where you can relax fully, never while driving or doing something that needs your attention.

My appointment with susannah has gone very very well, I have now been off the weed habit for over a month now, she has taken away my want to smoke it and some of the issues that go with it when you stop smoking it, I cannot thank this lady enough for giving me a new start, the voice notes that you will get after your appointment help so much, I listen to them every night before bed, now I only need to listen to them every now and then, not once have I wanted to go and get some (w) and it is all down to the appointment I had with susannah, highly recommend if you have the problem that I had, tried to give up myself but always gave in to it, I have a new life now and getting a lot done, sleeping is good and have saved a lot of money not smoking it, thinking more clearly now too, I’m so please as it’s been a habit of mine for many many years, I couldn’t have done this without her help and I’m so grateful, she is there if you need extra help too x

I’ve been working with Susannah for several months to work on my insomnia issues. After a few sessions we discovered I was also mildly depressed and we have been working together to try and fix the issues I was experiencing. In just 6 weeks I’ve gone from a fragment of myself to an inspired, vibrant person again and I’m so thrilled with the results. Susannah’s hypnotherapy sessions are beautiful and she really works with you to become better. Highly recommend her to anyone!

Highly recommended. It is very easy to communicate with Susannah and Susannah transmits positive vibes. Clearly Susannah focus is the well being of her patients. I gave up vaping in one session, no craving and no need to substitute by something else. This helps me to open a new chapter in my life without the servitude of smoking/vaping. 100% success as far as I am concerned. Would turn to Susannah again for what ever my needs are in the future.

I have been on quite the journey with Susannah. For so many years so many aspects of my life seemed to be causing me anxiety and anger, making me too exhausted to complete simple, everyday tasks, that seemed straightforward to other people. I couldn’t imagine things would improve without months of therapy at least. Working with Susannah however made me understand that it was my perception of my life rather than the events of my life that needed addressing, and this made finding solutions so much more manageable. Right from the first session things started to improve, and as it turned out, in total I needed only five sessions.Susannah has a gift for explaining complex functions of the brain in a super-accessible way, so that I now both understand what was going wrong and have developed strategies to support me in preventing the build-up of stress and anxiety in the future. I cannot think of an area of my life that has not been positively impacted by my time with Susannah and cannot recommend her highly enough.

I would like to start my review with thanking Susannah. I was sceptical, but went in with an open mind. I had one session of hypnosis to help quit smoking. I was a person that could stop and start but I wanted to quit for good. My session was at the beginning of Feb and so far so good. I feel a lot better health wise also helped motivate me to consistently go to the gym and generally take better care of myself. If your thinking about doing it, go for it, best decision I’ve made.

I got in touch with Susannah after yet another flight that made me feel sick and traumatised. Living overseas is great until you begin to have a fear or flying which impacts your ability to travel with your husband and also for work. Since spending time with Susannah i have been able to fly a total of 4 times in the last 2 weeks and havent gotten upset or fearful like i used too once – im now able to fly and the worst thing that happens is i get bored!! 🙂 I cant thank Susannah enough for helping me with this fear! Also, and i think no coincidence, i am far calmer in my day to day life. I absolutely never thought id be able to get off of a plane and go in to the office, instead of needing a sleep and a drink to get through it!!! Absolutely changed my life – long may it continue.

I’m a 33yo woman. I’ve struggled most of my life with low mood/depression and anxiety. I came to Susannah looking for help in changing my unhealthy habits and mindset. I can’t even tell you exactly what has changed since my 3 hypnotherapy sessions, only that something in me has shifted, I feel better, more content, positive and lighter and I’m making better choices. After the first session it felt like something in my brain moved, for the better. I was really sceptical going in to this, especially as the sessions were online, but it worked. Would definitely recommend Susannah, the sessions aren’t cheap but was worth every penny to me.

Can’t recommend Susannah enough! 3 months down and I’ve not touched a vape Or even thought about it. I will be honest, I was sceptical about hypno previously but it’s been such a great experience. My life has changed so positively since that session.

I recently had 3 sessions of hypnotherapy with Susannah to help with a fear of flying that had been causing me anxiety, and tainting my experience of travel and holidays for many years. This was my first experience of hypnotherapy, and it was an extremely positive and beneficial one, as I have since been on multiple flights without that old anxiety, and free of the accompanying tension and fear. This is entirely down to Susannah’s calming, patient manner and extremely insightful techniques. I can’t recommend her services highly enough. Thank you so so much Susannah!

What is people-pleasing?

People-pleasing is a habit of putting other people's needs, wishes and approval ahead of your own, often at a cost to yourself. It usually comes from a good place, such as wanting to be kind, helpful or liked.

The difference is that kindness is a choice, while people-pleasing can feel like something you have to do. Saying no, or even pausing before saying yes, can bring a wave of guilt or anxiety.

Read more about support with confidence and self-esteem.

Signs of people-pleasing

Common signs of people-pleasing include:

  • agreeing to things you do not want to do
  • apologising when you have done nothing wrong
  • changing your opinions to fit in
  • feeling responsible for other people's moods
  • finding it hard to say how you feel
  • putting off your own plans to help others
  • feeling anxious if someone seems annoyed with you
  • struggling to accept help or compliments

If several of these sound familiar, hypnotherapy may help.

Where people-pleasing comes from

People-pleasing can develop when being helpful, agreeable or easy-going has brought approval or reduced conflict. Some people recognise these expectations from childhood; others notice the pattern after a difficult relationship or a demanding period at work.

Sometimes, appeasing others has been a way of coping with feeling unsafe. This is often described as a fawn response. We explore what is relevant to you without assuming that every people-pleasing habit comes from trauma.

Read more about support after a controlling or abusive relationship.

Hypnotherapy for setting boundaries

Boundaries are the limits you set around your time, energy and emotions. They help others know what you are comfortable with, and they protect your relationships from resentment. A boundary can be as simple as leaving work on time or taking a day to think about a request.

For people-pleasers, setting a boundary can feel selfish or even frightening. Hypnotherapy for setting boundaries aims to help you set them calmly and stick to them.

Hypnosis for saying no

Saying no can bring up guilt, worry about what others will think or fear of conflict. Many people say yes on autopilot, then regret it straight away.

Hypnosis for saying no aims to calm the anxious response, so you can pause, check in with yourself and answer honestly. In hypnosis, you can also rehearse saying no in situations you find hard, where helpful.

Hypnotherapy for guilt and fear of disappointing others

Guilt can keep a people-pleasing pattern going. Even a small no may leave you replaying the conversation or wondering whether someone is upset.

We can work on tolerating those uncomfortable feelings, separating responsibility from assumption and recognising that caring about someone does not require agreeing to every request. The aim is to make thoughtful choices without automatically abandoning your own needs.

Hypnotherapy for people-pleasing at work

At work, people-pleasing can mean taking on extra tasks, staying late, struggling to delegate or agreeing to deadlines you know are unrealistic. Over time, this can lead to stress and burnout.

Hypnotherapy for people-pleasing at work aims to help you speak up, share your workload and protect your time with confidence.

Hypnosis for people-pleasing in relationships

People-pleasing can mean hiding your feelings, agreeing to plans you do not enjoy or always being the person who gives way. It may happen with a partner, parents, friends or other family members.

We can work on expressing your needs and developing more balanced relationships. Where someone is controlling, threatening or abusive, support should focus on your safety and choices; you do not have to confront them to prove you can set a boundary.

Read more about hypnotherapy for dating and relationships.

Hypnotherapy for assertiveness

Being assertive means saying what you think and asking for what you need, calmly and respectfully. It is very different from being aggressive or difficult. It means respecting your own needs as well as other people's.

Hypnotherapy for assertiveness aims to build the confidence to share your opinions, ask for help and stand your ground when you need to.

People-pleasing, stress and burnout

Always being available can leave little room for recovery. When you regularly agree to more than you have capacity for, you may notice tiredness, tension, irritability or difficulty switching off.

Sessions can focus on reducing stress and making space for rest, alongside clearer decisions about what you take on. Persistent exhaustion or low mood is also worth discussing with your GP, so you can explore any additional support you need.

Read more about support with anxiety.

How people-pleasing affects daily life

People-pleasing can leave little time for the things you enjoy. You might cancel your own plans, feel constantly on call or lose touch with what you want.

Many people feel unseen or taken for granted, even by those they do the most for. This can affect confidence, health and relationships. Some people only notice how much they have been giving when they feel burnt out or resentful.

Who people-pleasing hypnotherapy can help

People-pleasing hypnotherapy can help many different people, including:

  • people who find it hard to say no
  • those who always put others first
  • people who avoid conflict at all costs
  • carers and parents who put themselves last
  • people who take on too much at work
  • those who struggle to set boundaries with family
  • people recovering from a controlling relationship
  • anyone who feels guilty putting themselves first

It can help whether people-pleasing affects one area of your life or many.

The beliefs behind people-pleasing

Beliefs such as “my needs don’t count”, “I must keep everyone happy” or “they’ll leave if I say no” can make it hard to respond freely. You might know logically that a request is unreasonable and still feel compelled to agree.

Hypnotherapy provides space to explore these familiar expectations and practise a kinder, more balanced view of yourself. The aim is to feel that your time, preferences and wellbeing deserve consideration too.

People-pleasing, hypnosis and the subconscious mind

People often use the word subconscious to describe learned reactions that feel automatic. You might agree before considering your own plans, apologise immediately or read disapproval into someone’s expression.

Hypnosis uses focused attention, imagery and tailored suggestions to work with these familiar patterns. You can rehearse pausing, noticing what you need and choosing a response that fits your values.

What people-pleasing hypnosis feels like

Hypnosis involves comfortable, focused attention and can feel deeply relaxing. You remain able to communicate, move and decide how you engage with suggestions. It is a collaborative clinical appointment, guided by your goals.

For someone accustomed to looking after everyone else, the session can also be a welcome opportunity to focus on their own wellbeing. We discuss what helps you feel comfortable before beginning.

Techniques used in hypnotherapy for people-pleasing and boundaries

The approach is tailored to your concerns and can include:

  • exploring beliefs about approval, responsibility and self-worth
  • suggestions that support calm confidence
  • mental rehearsal of saying no or asking for what you need
  • working gently with feelings linked to criticism or conflict
  • noticing your preferences before answering a request
  • practising a pause instead of an automatic yes
  • relaxation and self-hypnosis for use at home
  • recognising and building on everyday progress

You do not need to force a difficult conversation or revisit an experience before you feel ready. We agree a comfortable pace and useful next steps together.

Is hypnotherapy for people-pleasing right for you?

You can enquire if saying no, expressing your needs or dealing with disapproval feels difficult. The work can focus on a single situation or on patterns across work, family and relationships.

An initial conversation gives you space to explain what you want help with and ask about the approach. We agree goals that fit your circumstances and make room for your own choices throughout.

Choosing a hypnotherapist for people-pleasing

When choosing a hypnotherapist for people-pleasing, look for recognised qualifications and experience of working with confidence, anxiety and self-esteem. It also helps to feel comfortable with the person you choose, and an initial consultation is a good chance to ask questions.

I hold the SQHP and HPD qualifications and have been practising as a clinical hypnotherapist since 2003.

The benefits of hypnotherapy for people-pleasing and boundaries

Hypnotherapy for people-pleasing aims to help you feel confident, respected and at ease putting yourself first. Benefits can include:

  • saying no calmly and with confidence
  • setting boundaries and sticking to them
  • feeling at ease putting yourself first
  • more time and energy for yourself
  • speaking up at work and at home
  • more balanced relationships
  • stronger self-worth
  • feeling more like yourself again

If you would like help with people-pleasing, contact me to find out more or book your initial consultation.

Research and practical support for anxiety and self-esteem

A 2019 meta-analysis by Valentine and colleagues found benefits from hypnosis for reducing anxiety, with stronger effects when combined with other psychological approaches. This research informs the anxiety-management element of sessions, including work on the worry that can arise around saying no or expressing a need.

The NHS guidance on raising self-esteem encourages challenging unhelpful beliefs, practising assertiveness and learning to say no. These practical ideas fit the goals we can rehearse together: valuing your needs, communicating clearly and developing a more supportive relationship with yourself.

People-pleasing and boundaries hypnotherapy: frequently asked questions

Answers about saying no, guilt, assertiveness, relationships and appointments in London or online.

Understanding people-pleasing

What is people-pleasing?

People-pleasing is a pattern of prioritising other people’s approval or needs at a repeated cost to your own. You might agree to requests you want to decline, hide your preferences or feel responsible for everyone’s happiness. The key issue is whether your choices feel free and balanced, or driven by guilt and fear.

What are the signs that I am a people-pleaser?

Common signs include saying yes automatically, over-apologising, avoiding disagreement and worrying excessively about disappointing others. You may feel drained or resentful after helping, while struggling to ask for help yourself. Noticing when this happens gives us useful starting points for your sessions.

What is the difference between kindness and people-pleasing?

Kindness allows room for your own needs and for a genuine choice. People-pleasing can feel compulsory, even when you are exhausted or uncomfortable. The aim of our work is to keep the warmth and generosity you value while making it easier to decide when, how and whether you want to help.

Is people-pleasing a mental health condition?

People-pleasing describes a behaviour pattern rather than a diagnosis in itself. It can overlap with anxiety, low self-esteem or difficult relationship experiences. You do not need a label to ask for support with saying no, expressing a preference or protecting your time.

Why do I say yes when I really want to say no?

You may have learned to associate agreeing with approval, harmony or security. A request can then bring an automatic yes before you consider your own capacity. Sessions can explore those expectations and help you rehearse a pause, so you have more space to choose your answer.

Where does people-pleasing come from?

The pattern can develop through family expectations, friendships, school, demanding workplaces or difficult relationships. Some people learned that being agreeable reduced conflict; others became used to earning approval through helping. We explore your experience without assuming there must be one particular cause.

Is people-pleasing the same as the fawn response?

The term fawn response is often used for appeasing others when someone feels threatened or unsafe. People-pleasing is broader and may also involve habit, approval-seeking or fear of everyday disagreement. Understanding the circumstances matters, especially when a current relationship feels controlling or frightening.

Can people-pleasing affect confidence and wellbeing?

Repeatedly overlooking your own preferences can leave you doubting your judgement or feeling unseen. Taking on too much may also add to stress and make rest difficult. Our goals can include recognising what you want, trusting your decisions and making more room for your wellbeing.

Boundaries, saying no and guilt

What are healthy boundaries?

Healthy boundaries are limits around your time, energy, privacy, body and participation. They communicate what you are comfortable with and what you will do to look after yourself. For example, a boundary might be switching off work messages in the evening or declining a conversation when you need a break.

Can hypnotherapy help me set boundaries?

Hypnotherapy can help you work on the anxiety, guilt and self-doubt that make boundaries difficult. We can rehearse clear responses in hypnosis and agree manageable ways to practise them. The focus is on making choices that reflect your needs and values, with consideration for your circumstances.

Can hypnosis help me say no without feeling so guilty?

We can focus on the guilt and worry that arise when you decline a request. Hypnosis offers a setting to practise a calmer response and explore the belief that saying no makes you unkind. You can learn to acknowledge a feeling without automatically changing your answer because of it.

Is setting a boundary selfish?

A thoughtful boundary recognises that your needs matter alongside those of other people. Protecting time for rest, work or your own plans can make your commitments more sustainable. We can explore the difference between being considerate and taking responsibility for things that are not yours to manage.

How can I say no politely without over-explaining?

A brief, clear response is often enough: “Thank you for asking, but I can’t take that on.” You can acknowledge someone’s request without giving a long defence. If answering immediately feels difficult, practise “Let me check and get back to you” to create space for a considered decision.

What if I worry that a boundary will upset someone?

It is understandable to care about another person’s feelings, but their disappointment does not automatically mean your boundary is wrong. We can work on communicating respectfully and tolerating ordinary disagreement. If you fear retaliation or harm, the priority is safe support and planning rather than confronting that person.

How do I keep a boundary when someone pushes back?

It can help to repeat your message calmly and focus on the action you can take, rather than trying to secure agreement. For example, you might end a call at the time you said you would. We can rehearse responses that fit the relationship and your safety.

Can I change my mind after I have already said yes?

You can review a commitment when you realise you do not have the capacity for it. Explain the change as clearly and promptly as you can, taking account of any practical responsibilities. Therapy can help you approach that conversation without turning a change of plan into a judgement of your worth.

What is the difference between a boundary and controlling someone?

A boundary describes your limits and the actions you will take. Control tries to determine another person’s choices. “I will leave a conversation if I am shouted at” describes your response; demanding that someone never feel angry attempts to govern their feelings. We can explore examples from your own life.

Work, family and relationships

Can hypnotherapy help with people-pleasing at work?

Sessions can focus on the anxiety around declining extra tasks, questioning an unrealistic deadline or asking for support. We can rehearse calm, professional language and explore beliefs about needing to be constantly useful. Practical workplace processes and a conversation with your manager may also help clarify expectations.

How can I set boundaries around workload and availability?

Start with a clear picture of your commitments and capacity. You might ask which task takes priority, agree realistic deadlines or clarify when you are available for messages. Hypnotherapy can support the confidence to have these conversations and reduce the urge to agree automatically.

Can hypnotherapy help me be more assertive?

Assertiveness means expressing your views and needs respectfully while recognising the rights of others. We can work on the worry that speaking up makes you difficult, then rehearse situations such as asking a question, making a request or disagreeing calmly. Small everyday opportunities can help you practise.

How can I set boundaries with parents or family?

Family boundaries may involve visits, advice, privacy, money or expectations about your time. We can explore what is realistic for your circumstances and practise communicating a clear preference. It can be useful to begin with a manageable change rather than trying to renegotiate every relationship at once.

Can people-pleasing affect romantic relationships?

People-pleasing may lead you to hide disagreement, accept plans you dislike or overlook your own emotional and physical boundaries. Sessions can support more honest communication and confidence about your preferences. A balanced relationship makes room for each person’s choices, including the freedom to say no.

Can hypnotherapy help with boundaries in friendships?

We can work on asking for support, declining plans, addressing one-sided expectations or making space for your own interests. You can value a friendship while being honest about your capacity. The aim is to help your choices feel more authentic rather than driven by fear of losing approval.

Can carers and parents work on people-pleasing?

Yes. Caring responsibilities can make it difficult to recognise where a practical duty ends and an automatic expectation begins. We can explore realistic ways to ask for help, share tasks and protect small periods of rest. Your responsibilities and the support available to you shape the goals.

Can hypnotherapy help after a controlling or abusive relationship?

Sessions can support self-trust, confidence and recognition of your preferences after a difficult relationship. Where control or abuse is ongoing, specialist support and safety planning matter too. You do not have to confront someone or disclose your plans to them as part of setting a boundary.

Can I stay kind while becoming less of a people-pleaser?

Yes. The aim is to make kindness more freely chosen and sustainable. You can remain warm and helpful while being honest about your limits. We can focus on the kind of person you want to be, including how you would like to treat yourself.

Hypnotherapy and everyday change

How does hypnotherapy for people-pleasing work?

We explore the situations, expectations and emotions that lead you to put yourself last. During hypnosis, focused attention, imagery and therapeutic suggestions help you rehearse different responses. Goals might include pausing before answering, expressing a preference or feeling more comfortable with respectful disagreement.

Can hypnotherapy help with over-apologising?

We can explore what an apology is doing for you: smoothing tension, seeking reassurance or preventing anticipated criticism. Sessions can help you recognise when an apology is appropriate and when a different response would fit better. For example, you might thank someone for waiting rather than apologise repeatedly.

Can hypnosis help with fear of rejection and approval-seeking?

Hypnotherapy can focus on the anxious predictions and self-critical beliefs that make approval feel essential. We can rehearse responding to uncertainty with greater self-trust and explore how to value your own judgement. This work is shaped around the situations that matter to you.

Can hypnotherapy help me stop replaying conversations?

We can work on the worry and self-criticism that keep you reviewing what you said or imagining someone is upset. The focus may include a calmer response to uncertainty, more balanced interpretations and ways to return attention to the present. Clearer boundaries can also reduce decisions made purely to seek reassurance.

Will I need to revisit difficult childhood experiences?

We can discuss relevant experiences at a pace you feel comfortable with, but you do not need to give detailed accounts of everything that has happened. My approach is solution-focused and guided by your goals. You can say when you want to pause or concentrate on a different aspect of the work.

Will I stay in control during hypnosis?

Yes. Hypnosis is collaborative, and you remain able to communicate, move and decide how to engage. We discuss the approach beforehand and work with suggestions that fit your goals. Feeling comfortable with the therapist and knowing you can ask questions are important parts of the appointment.

How many sessions might I need for people-pleasing?

We discuss a plan after exploring your goals and review it together as the work develops. A specific conversation or situation may need a different focus from a longstanding pattern across several relationships. Useful progress includes changes in everyday choices, such as a pause before agreeing or a clearer request for help.

What can I practise between appointments?

You can listen to your personalised session recording in a safe, comfortable place and practise the small steps we agree. These might include noticing an automatic yes, taking time before answering or expressing a low-pressure preference. Recordings should never be used while driving or doing tasks that require attention.
