Your safety comes first

If you are in immediate danger in the UK, call 999. Leaving an abusive relationship can increase risk. A specialist service can help you consider your options and plan safely.

If someone may monitor your phone or computer, use a safer device to seek support where possible. See Refuge’s safety guidance. Hypnotherapy supports emotional wellbeing alongside specialist help; it does not replace safety planning.

What hypnotherapy for narcissistic abuse can help with

Narcissistic abuse can leave deep and lasting effects, even after the relationship has ended. Hypnotherapy for narcissistic abuse can help with:

  • anxiety and feeling constantly on edge
  • self-doubt and second-guessing yourself
  • low self-esteem and self-worth
  • the emotional hold that keeps you going back
  • finding the confidence to leave
  • staying no contact
  • replaying what happened
  • trusting yourself and others again

It aims to help you feel calmer, steadier and more like yourself again.

How hypnotherapy for narcissistic abuse recovery works

We begin with your circumstances, your sense of safety and what you would like support with now. Goals might include feeling less anxious, rebuilding confidence, sleeping more comfortably or trusting your own decisions.

Sessions use focused attention, calming exercises, imagery and therapeutic suggestions tailored to those goals. We work at a pace you can manage and review how you are finding the process. You do not have to relive distressing experiences in detail.

Working with a hypnotherapist for narcissistic abuse

Working with a hypnotherapist for narcissistic abuse starts with an initial consultation. In this first session, we talk about where you are now and how you would like to feel.

I explain the approach, answer your questions and agree suitable goals with you. Your first appointment includes hypnosis as well as the consultation, where appropriate for your needs.

My approach is solution-focused, so we concentrate on your recovery and the progress you make.

What happens in a narcissistic abuse hypnotherapy session

Each session after the first starts with a short conversation about what has gone well since we last spoke. Most of the session is hypnosis, using the techniques that suit you.

You can receive a personalised recording of your session to use between appointments. We agree whether keeping and listening to a recording is safe and comfortable for you, especially if someone else has access to your devices. Listen only where it is safe to relax, never while driving or operating machinery.

My appointment with susannah has gone very very well, I have now been off the weed habit for over a month now, she has taken away my want to smoke it and some of the issues that go with it when you stop smoking it, I cannot thank this lady enough for giving me a new start, the voice notes that you will get after your appointment help so much, I listen to them every night before bed, now I only need to listen to them every now and then, not once have I wanted to go and get some (w) and it is all down to the appointment I had with susannah, highly recommend if you have the problem that I had, tried to give up myself but always gave in to it, I have a new life now and getting a lot done, sleeping is good and have saved a lot of money not smoking it, thinking more clearly now too, I’m so please as it’s been a habit of mine for many many years, I couldn’t have done this without her help and I’m so grateful, she is there if you need extra help too x

I’ve been working with Susannah for several months to work on my insomnia issues. After a few sessions we discovered I was also mildly depressed and we have been working together to try and fix the issues I was experiencing. In just 6 weeks I’ve gone from a fragment of myself to an inspired, vibrant person again and I’m so thrilled with the results. Susannah’s hypnotherapy sessions are beautiful and she really works with you to become better. Highly recommend her to anyone!

Highly recommended. It is very easy to communicate with Susannah and Susannah transmits positive vibes. Clearly Susannah focus is the well being of her patients. I gave up vaping in one session, no craving and no need to substitute by something else. This helps me to open a new chapter in my life without the servitude of smoking/vaping. 100% success as far as I am concerned. Would turn to Susannah again for what ever my needs are in the future.

I have been on quite the journey with Susannah. For so many years so many aspects of my life seemed to be causing me anxiety and anger, making me too exhausted to complete simple, everyday tasks, that seemed straightforward to other people. I couldn’t imagine things would improve without months of therapy at least. Working with Susannah however made me understand that it was my perception of my life rather than the events of my life that needed addressing, and this made finding solutions so much more manageable. Right from the first session things started to improve, and as it turned out, in total I needed only five sessions.

Susannah has a gift for explaining complex functions of the brain in a super-accessible way, so that I now both understand what was going wrong and have developed strategies to support me in preventing the build-up of stress and anxiety in the future. I cannot think of an area of my life that has not been positively impacted by my time with Susannah and cannot recommend her highly enough.

I would like to start my review with thanking Susannah. I was sceptical, but went in with an open mind. I had one session of hypnosis to help quit smoking. I was a person that could stop and start but I wanted to quit for good. My session was at the beginning of Feb and so far so good. I feel a lot better health wise also helped motivate me to consistently go to the gym and generally take better care of myself. If your thinking about doing it, go for it, best decision I’ve made.

I got in touch with Susannah after yet another flight that made me feel sick and traumatised. Living overseas is great until you begin to have a fear or flying which impacts your ability to travel with your husband and also for work. Since spending time with Susannah i have been able to fly a total of 4 times in the last 2 weeks and havent gotten upset or fearful like i used too once – im now able to fly and the worst thing that happens is i get bored!! 🙂 I cant thank Susannah enough for helping me with this fear! Also, and i think no coincidence, i am far calmer in my day to day life. I absolutely never thought id be able to get off of a plane and go in to the office, instead of needing a sleep and a drink to get through it!!! Absolutely changed my life – long may it continue.

I’m a 33yo woman. I’ve struggled most of my life with low mood/depression and anxiety. I came to Susannah looking for help in changing my unhealthy habits and mindset.
I can’t even tell you exactly what has changed since my 3 hypnotherapy sessions, only that something in me has shifted, I feel better, more content, positive and lighter and I’m making better choices.
After the first session it felt like something in my brain moved, for the better. I was really sceptical going in to this, especially as the sessions were online, but it worked.
Would definitely recommend Susannah, the sessions aren’t cheap but was worth every penny to me.

Can’t recommend Susannah enough!
3 months down and I’ve not touched a vape
Or even thought about it.
I will be honest, I was sceptical about hypno previously but it’s been such a great experience.
My life has changed so positively since that session.

I recently had 3 sessions of hypnotherapy with Susannah to help with a fear of flying that had been causing me anxiety, and tainting my experience of travel and holidays for many years. This was my first experience of hypnotherapy, and it was an extremely positive and beneficial one, as I have since been on multiple flights without that old anxiety, and free of the accompanying tension and fear. This is entirely down to Susannah’s calming, patient manner and extremely insightful techniques. I can’t recommend her services highly enough. Thank you so so much Susannah!

What is narcissistic abuse?

Narcissistic abuse is a term people use to describe patterns of emotional abuse, manipulation and control, often associated with narcissistic traits. It can involve a partner, parent, family member, friend or boss. The harm you experience matters whether or not the other person has a diagnosis.

The term is not a diagnosis of the other person. We focus on what happened and how it has affected you. Some relationships alternate intense affection with criticism, intimidation or withdrawal; not every experience follows the same pattern.

Signs of a narcissistic relationship

Every relationship is different, but common signs include:

  • being criticised, belittled or made to feel stupid
  • feeling you are always to blame
  • having your memory or feelings questioned, often called gaslighting
  • the silent treatment, or affection withdrawn as punishment
  • being cut off from friends or family
  • control over your money, phone or where you go
  • walking on eggshells to avoid upsetting them
  • apologies and promises, followed by the same behaviour again

If several of these feel familiar, it may help to talk to someone you trust or a specialist service.

Hypnotherapy for gaslighting and self-doubt

Gaslighting is when someone makes you question your own memory, perception or judgement. Over time, you may stop trusting yourself and rely on the other person to tell you what is real.

This self-doubt often continues after the relationship ends. Hypnotherapy after gaslighting aims to rebuild trust in your own judgement, so you can feel steadier and more sure of yourself.

Read more about support for confidence and self-esteem.

Why it can be hard to leave a narcissistic relationship

People often ask why someone stays, but leaving is rarely simple. Fear, shared finances, children, isolation and hope that things will change can all play a part.

The good times in the relationship can make the bad times easier to explain away. Many people also blame themselves, believing that if they try harder, things will improve. None of this is a sign of weakness.

Hypnotherapy for trauma bonding

A trauma bond describes a strong attachment that can develop in a relationship where harm is mixed with affection or reassurance. You may know a relationship is hurting you and still miss the person or feel drawn back. That does not make the abuse your fault.

Sessions can support the anxiety, self-doubt and difficult feelings around that attachment. We can practise responding to urges with more steadiness, strengthen your sense of worth and support choices made with specialist safety advice where needed.

Hypnotherapy for leaving a toxic relationship

Deciding what to do can take time. Fear, money, housing, children and isolation can make leaving complicated. Hypnotherapy can support clarity and confidence as you consider your options, without telling you which decision to make or when to act.

A specialist domestic abuse service can help assess risk and plan practical steps safely. Therapy is not a substitute for that support, and you do not need to confront the other person as part of this work.

Hypnosis for no contact and moving on

Reducing or ending contact may help some people recover, but it is not possible or safe in every situation. Shared children, work and legal arrangements may mean contact continues. A specialist adviser can help you consider what is appropriate.

Where it fits your circumstances, sessions can help with urges to reply, check social media or return to the relationship. The focus is on managing your feelings and supporting boundaries that are realistic for you, without blaming you if contact happens.

Hypnotherapy for co-parenting with a narcissistic ex

When you share children with an abusive or controlling ex, messages, handovers and school events can bring up anxiety. Sessions can support emotional steadiness and help you practise responses within arrangements that are safe and appropriate.

This work focuses on your wellbeing. Child safety, contact arrangements and legal questions need advice from the relevant specialist services. Being calmer does not mean you are responsible for managing another person’s abusive behaviour.

The effects of narcissistic abuse

Narcissistic abuse can affect your mind and body long after it ends. Common effects include:

  • anxiety and feeling constantly on alert
  • low self-esteem and self-blame
  • second-guessing your own judgement
  • replaying conversations and arguments
  • difficulty sleeping
  • feeling numb, low or not like yourself
  • finding it hard to trust new people

These are common responses to a harmful relationship, and they can ease with the right support.

Read more about hypnotherapy for anxiety.

Who hypnotherapy for narcissistic abuse can help

Hypnotherapy for narcissistic abuse can help many different people, including:

  • people still in the relationship and thinking about leaving
  • those who have recently left
  • people who left years ago but still feel affected
  • parents co-parenting with a narcissistic ex
  • adults who grew up with a narcissistic parent
  • people affected by a narcissistic boss or colleague
  • people of any gender or background

It can help wherever you are in your recovery.

The beliefs narcissistic abuse leaves behind

Repeated criticism can leave thoughts such as ‘it was my fault’, ‘I’m too sensitive’ or ‘no one else would want me’. Hearing these messages repeatedly can make them feel true, even after the relationship has ended.

We can explore these familiar thoughts and practise a kinder, more balanced view of yourself. The aim is to support your judgement and self-worth, rather than replace your decisions with someone else’s reassurance.

Narcissistic abuse, hypnosis and the subconscious mind

After an abusive relationship, a message notification, tone of voice or familiar place may bring a rush of anxiety. It can feel as though the reaction happens before you have time to think.

When I refer to the subconscious, I mean familiar expectations and automatic responses. Hypnosis uses focused attention, imagery and therapeutic suggestions to practise helpful responses. We take your current circumstances seriously rather than assuming every alarm is unnecessary.

What narcissistic abuse hypnosis feels like

Hypnosis involves focused attention and may feel calm or absorbed, a little like daydreaming. Experiences vary. You can speak, move, keep your eyes open or stop, and you do not need to relax perfectly.

This is a collaborative clinical process. We agree what you want to work on, and you can decline any exercise. Your comfort, choices and pace matter throughout.

Techniques used in hypnotherapy after narcissistic abuse

Sessions are tailored to your needs and may include:

  • grounding and calming exercises for anxious moments
  • noticing and responding to self-critical thoughts
  • imagery and positive suggestion to support confidence
  • practising trust in your own judgement
  • rehearsing boundaries where it is safe to do so
  • working with the urge to seek reassurance or re-establish contact
  • self-hypnosis or relaxation to use between sessions
  • building routines that support sleep and everyday life

We agree exercises together. Hypnosis is not used to recover supposedly hidden memories or establish what happened in the past.

Narcissistic abuse hypnotherapy alongside other support

Hypnotherapy can sit alongside specialist domestic abuse support, your GP, counselling or psychotherapy. Some people also need practical advice about housing, money or legal matters.

If you have persistent flashbacks, dissociation, severe distress or feel unable to cope, discuss this with your GP or a qualified mental health professional so your support fits your needs. We can discuss whether hypnotherapy is suitable alongside the care you receive.

Is hypnotherapy for narcissistic abuse right for you?

You can enquire while still in the relationship, after leaving or years later. We discuss your needs, current safety and any other support before deciding whether this approach fits.

You do not need to prove what happened or be at a particular stage of recovery to ask for help. If you are currently unsafe, specialist domestic abuse support is the priority; the services below can help with options and planning.

Choosing a hypnotherapist for narcissistic abuse recovery

When choosing a hypnotherapist for narcissistic abuse recovery, look for recognised qualifications and experience of working with anxiety, confidence and self-worth. It is especially important to feel safe and comfortable with the person you choose. An initial consultation is a good chance to ask questions.

I hold the SQHP and HPD qualifications and have been practising as a clinical hypnotherapist since 2003.

The benefits of hypnotherapy after narcissistic abuse

Hypnotherapy after narcissistic abuse aims to help you feel safe, steady and like yourself again. Benefits can include:

  • feeling calmer and less on edge
  • trusting your own judgement again
  • stronger self-esteem and self-worth
  • less self-blame
  • fewer intrusive thoughts about the relationship
  • finding it easier to stay no contact
  • better sleep
  • feeling ready for healthy relationships in the future

If you would like help recovering from narcissistic abuse, contact me to find out more or book your initial consultation.

Research on hypnosis for anxiety

A 2019 meta-analysis by Valentine and colleagues reviewed 15 studies containing 17 trials. It found benefits for anxiety, with stronger effects when hypnosis was combined with other psychological approaches.

These findings concern anxiety relief. Reducing anxiety can be a useful part of recovery support, alongside rebuilding self-trust, appropriate practical help and your own priorities.

Narcissistic abuse hypnotherapy: frequently asked questions

Answers about emotional abuse recovery, hypnosis, self-trust and appointments in London or online.

Understanding abuse and its effects

What is narcissistic abuse?

Narcissistic abuse is a term used for patterns of emotional abuse, manipulation and control often associated with narcissistic traits. It can occur in intimate, family, social or work relationships. Support focuses on the behaviour and its effects on you, rather than needing a diagnosis of the other person.

Does the other person need a narcissistic personality disorder diagnosis?

No. You can seek support for harmful or abusive behaviour without knowing whether someone has a diagnosis. A diagnosis cannot be made from your account alone, and a label does not establish whether abuse occurred. Your safety, experiences and needs are the starting point.

Can emotional abuse affect me without physical violence?

Yes. Repeated humiliation, intimidation, isolation or control can affect confidence, wellbeing and your sense of safety even without physical violence. You do not have to wait for physical harm to ask for help. A specialist domestic abuse service can discuss what is happening and the support available.

What is gaslighting?

Gaslighting describes manipulation that makes someone doubt their memory, perception or judgement. Repeated denial, distortion or blame can leave you questioning yourself. We can work on the anxiety and self-doubt that remain, without asking hypnosis to decide which memories are accurate.

Why do I still feel anxious after the relationship has ended?

Anxiety does not always disappear when contact ends. Familiar reminders, ongoing messages or worries about the future may still feel threatening. Sessions can help you work on these reactions while taking any continuing risks seriously. Persistent or severe symptoms also deserve discussion with an appropriate health professional.

Is it normal to miss someone who treated me badly?

Mixed feelings are common after a harmful relationship. You may miss affection, companionship or the future you hoped for while recognising the harm. Missing someone does not make their behaviour acceptable, and it does not mean you have to return. Support can help you make room for those feelings.

Is the abuse my fault because I stayed or went back?

No. Responsibility for abusive behaviour lies with the person using it. Fear, money, children, isolation, affection and hope can all make decisions complicated. Therapy should support your wellbeing and choices without blaming you for how long it takes to work out what is safe and right for you.

Can I seek help years after an abusive relationship?

Yes. You can ask for support whenever the effects are troubling you, whether the relationship ended recently or many years ago. Goals may include greater self-trust, less anxiety or feeling more comfortable with boundaries. You do not need to justify why it still matters.

Hypnotherapy, confidence and recovery

What is hypnotherapy for narcissistic abuse recovery?

It is individual hypnotherapy focused on concerns such as anxiety, self-doubt, low confidence and difficult feelings after an abusive relationship. We agree goals together and use calming exercises, imagery and therapeutic suggestions. Your current safety and any specialist support remain part of deciding what is appropriate.

How can hypnotherapy support recovery after gaslighting?

Sessions can focus on self-doubt, repeated reassurance-seeking and the fear of making mistakes. We can practise pausing, noticing your own preferences and responding more kindly to yourself. The aim is to support your judgement, not to ask you to rely on the therapist to tell you what is real.

Can hypnosis help rebuild self-esteem after emotional abuse?

Hypnotherapy can support work on the self-critical thoughts and expectations that repeated criticism may leave. We can rehearse responding to yourself with more respect and recognising your needs. Progress is personal and may show up in everyday choices, boundaries and how you speak to yourself.

What is a trauma bond?

A trauma bond describes a powerful attachment that can develop when harm and affection are mixed together. It can help explain why separation feels emotionally complicated even when you recognise the harm. The term describes a pattern; it is not a judgement about your strength or a reason to blame yourself.

Can hypnotherapy help with a trauma bond?

Sessions can address anxiety, longing, self-doubt and urges to reconnect that are sometimes described as a trauma bond. We can practise tolerating difficult feelings and strengthening self-worth. This emotional support works alongside practical and specialist advice about contact and safety, rather than promising to break an attachment instantly.

Can I work on replaying conversations and arguments?

Yes. We can explore how repetitive thinking affects your day and practise ways to return attention to the present. The aim is to reduce how much these thoughts take over, not to erase what happened. If memories feel like vivid flashbacks or cause severe distress, we discuss suitable additional care.

Can hypnotherapy help with sleep after an abusive relationship?

Sessions can include support for worry and tension around bedtime, with a manageable relaxation routine where it feels safe. Ongoing danger, nightmares or other health concerns may need additional help. If sleep problems persist, speak to your GP as well as discussing your goals in therapy.

Do I need to forgive the other person to recover?

No. Forgiveness is a personal choice and is not a requirement for this work. Sessions focus on your wellbeing, self-trust and future. You can work towards a more settled life while keeping boundaries, recognising harm and deciding for yourself what meaning to give the relationship.

Safety, contact and family relationships

Can I enquire while I am still in the relationship?

Yes. We can discuss emotional support while you consider your circumstances and options. If you are unsafe, a specialist domestic abuse service is the priority. You do not need to be ready to leave to contact a helpline, and therapy will not pressure you into a decision.

Can hypnotherapy help me find the confidence to leave?

Hypnotherapy can support confidence and clearer thinking as you consider options. Planning when and how to leave needs specialist safety advice because separation can increase risk. We do not make leaving or confronting someone a therapy assignment; decisions should reflect your circumstances and appropriate support.

Should I go no contact with an abusive ex?

There is no single answer for everyone. Safety, shared children, work and legal arrangements can affect what is possible. A specialist adviser can help you consider contact options. Hypnotherapy can support the emotions around a plan that fits your circumstances, without making blanket recommendations.

Can hypnosis help with the urge to reply or check social media?

Sessions can help you notice and sit with the feelings behind checking or replying, then practise a response consistent with your chosen boundaries. We also consider whether messages involve threats or practical matters needing specialist advice. A difficult day or renewed contact is not a personal failure.

Can you support me when I share children with an abusive ex?

Individual sessions can support anxiety around contact, messages and handovers, and help you feel steadier. Child safety and contact arrangements need appropriate specialist or legal guidance. Therapy focuses on your wellbeing and does not decide custody, assess the other parent or replace safeguarding support.

Can hypnotherapy help after an emotionally abusive parent?

You can work on the self-doubt, guilt or anxiety that remains from a harmful family relationship. We may explore your needs and rehearse boundaries at a manageable pace. You do not have to adopt a label for your parent or make a particular decision about family contact.

Is this support available to men and LGBT+ people?

Yes. People of any gender or sexual orientation can experience emotional abuse and can enquire about individual sessions. The work follows your experiences and goals. What sessions involve and choosing support

Will I remain in control during hypnosis?

Yes. Hypnotherapy is collaborative: you can speak, move, ask for changes or stop. You can keep your eyes open if that is more comfortable. We agree the focus together, and you do not have to accept a suggestion or discuss something before you feel ready.

Do I have to relive the abuse in detail?

No. We discuss enough to understand your needs and whether the approach is suitable, without requiring a detailed retelling. You can set the pace and tell me what feels difficult. The work focuses on present concerns and helpful next steps rather than forcing a reliving of painful events.

Can hypnosis recover hidden memories or prove what happened?

Hypnosis is not a reliable way to recover hidden memories or verify events. Sessions do not use imagined scenes as evidence about the past. The focus is on your current feelings, wellbeing and coping, with appropriate professional advice for any legal or safeguarding questions.

Can I have hypnotherapy if relaxing makes me uncomfortable?

Tell me before we begin. We can discuss gentler exercises, keeping your eyes open, grounding and stopping whenever needed. You are not expected to relax on demand. If the approach feels unsettling or unsuitable, we can consider what other support may fit better.

Can hypnotherapy work alongside counselling or psychotherapy?

It may be possible when the roles of each approach are clear and suited to your needs. Let me know about other support so we can discuss how the work fits together. Practical domestic abuse support, healthcare and therapy can address different parts of recovery.

What if I have PTSD symptoms, flashbacks or dissociation?

Discuss these symptoms with your GP or a qualified mental health professional so you can access suitable assessment and care. Tell me about them before hypnosis. We consider whether this work is appropriate alongside your treatment, and do not use a general relaxation recording as a substitute for specialist care.

Is there research supporting hypnosis for anxiety?

Yes. A 2019 meta-analysis by Valentine and colleagues reviewed 17 trials and found benefits for anxiety, particularly when hypnosis was combined with other psychological approaches. The findings concern anxiety relief, which can be one relevant goal within a wider plan of recovery support.

How do I choose the best hypnotherapist for narcissistic abuse recovery?

The right fit is personal. Look for recognised qualifications, a clear explanation of the approach and someone who respects your pace and boundaries. Rapport matters. You can try my free relaxation audio to hear my voice and contact me to discuss your needs before deciding whether to book.

London appointments, online sessions and fees

Where do you offer narcissistic abuse recovery hypnotherapy in London?

Appointments are available at City Hypnotherapy Centre, Longcroft House, 2–8 Victoria Avenue, London EC2M 4NS, near Liverpool Street station. You can contact me to discuss your needs and whether this approach is suitable. Private online appointments are also available.

Can I have narcissistic abuse recovery hypnotherapy online?

Yes, individual sessions are available by Zoom. You need a private place where you can speak freely and a device you can use safely. If privacy is difficult or someone monitors your devices, discuss safer arrangements with a specialist service before organising online support.

How much does a hypnotherapy appointment cost?

A session costs £198, including VAT, and lasts approximately 50 minutes. Your first appointment includes hypnosis as well as the consultation, where appropriate for your needs. Appointments are available in London near Liverpool Street or online by Zoom.

What happens at the first consultation?

We discuss your current circumstances, what you would like help with and any other support you receive. I explain the approach, answer questions and consider suitability with you. The first appointment includes hypnosis where appropriate, and you can ask to pause or change an exercise.

How many sessions will I need?

The number depends on your needs, circumstances and how you find the work. We agree initial goals and review progress rather than promising a fixed number. Recovery is not a test or deadline, and you can discuss what feels manageable emotionally and practically.

Will I receive a personalised recording?

A personalised recording can be provided for practice between sessions. We discuss whether storing and listening to it is safe and helpful, especially if someone has access to your devices. Listen only when it is safe to relax, never while driving, cycling or operating machinery.

Can I hear your voice before booking?

Yes. My free 30-minute relaxation audio lets you hear my voice and try a general guided relaxation exercise. Use it only when it feels comfortable and safe, and stop if it unsettles you. Individual appointments are tailored to your needs rather than following a generic recording.

How do I arrange an initial appointment?

Contact me through the website, call 07973 896907 or email susannah@cityhypno.co.uk. You can give a brief outline without sharing details you are not ready to discuss. Please say how and when it is safe to contact you and whether you prefer London or online appointments.
