Hypnotherapy for Agoraphobia in London
Hello, I’m Susannah. I’m a fully qualified clinical hypnotherapist with over 22 years of experience helping people overcome agoraphobia and feel more confident in daily life.
I hold the Senior Qualification in Hypnotherapy Practice (SQHP) from the General Hypnotherapy Standards Council (GHSC), and the HPD from the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH). If you’re interested in hypnotherapy for agoraphobia, I’d be happy to help.
Agoraphobia is often misunderstood. While it’s commonly associated with a fear of open spaces, for many people, it’s more about feeling unsafe, trapped, or out of control when away from the familiar. It might show up when you’re far from home, in crowds, on public transport, or anywhere you don’t feel you can easily escape.
Some people feel anxious even thinking about going out. Others manage short distances but avoid certain places or situations altogether. What begins as a way to stay safe can gradually shrink your world, leaving you feeling stuck, isolated or frustrated.
That’s where hypnotherapy for agoraphobia can help. Hypnosis works with the part of your mind that’s triggering that primitive survival response. When you’re in a deep, relaxed state, your subconscious becomes more open to positive suggestions, so we can gently retrain your response to feel safer, calmer and more capable in everyday situations.

In my treatment for agoraphobia I use a combination of clinical hypnosis, NLP and coaching to help you gradually expand your comfort zone and build trust in yourself again. If your agoraphobia started after a panic attack or a stressful event, we can help your brain process it differently so that it no longer controls your future responses. If your agoraphobia feels completely irrational with no known origin, we’ll work with your subconscious to create a calmer, more balanced response going forward.
Is agoraphobia affecting your daily life?
- Do you avoid balconies, bridges, lifts or high floors whenever you can?
- Do you feel dizzy, panicky or sweaty at the thought of being up high?
- Do you make excuses to get out of situations that involve heights?
- Has your fear stopped you from travelling, socialising or enjoying certain experiences?
- Do you feel frustrated that you can’t “just get over it”, even though you know it’s irrational?
- Would you like to feel calm and in control in these situations?

Hypnosis is a calm, focused state where your mind becomes more receptive to helpful ideas and positive change. Most people find it deeply relaxing, a bit like being in a deep daydream. You’re not asleep, but your mind will wander. During this state, your subconscious is more open to suggestion, so we can help it create a new, more confident response.
Hypnotherapy for agoraphobia can help you:
- Feel more calm and in control when you leave the house
- Enjoy visiting places, running errands, and socialising
- Think more clearly and positively in busy or unfamiliar settings
- Experience a sense of freedom and independence
- Get excited about making future plans
How Hypnotherapy for Agoraphobia Works
Your brain is designed to keep you out of danger, and to do that, it scans every environment for threats. If your brain has linked certain places or situations with panic or anxiety, it can trigger the fight or flight response as a way to protect you.
When that internal alarm goes off, your brain releases stress chemicals like adrenaline and cortisol to prepare your body to act quickly. You might feel your heart racing, your breathing become shallow, or a strong urge to get out of the situation. Sometimes, you might feel frozen or disconnected, unable to move or think clearly.
The more often this happens, the more your brain starts to expect danger in those settings, and the fear response becomes automatic. But the brain is highly adaptable. Just as it learned this pattern, it can also unlearn it.
Hypnotherapy for agoraphobia works by calming the fear response and helping your subconscious create a new, more appropriate way to respond. As your mind starts to feel safer, those situations begin to feel more manageable and your confidence increases.

FAQs
What is agoraphobia?
Agoraphobia is a fear of being in situations where escaping might feel difficult or help might not be available, so often in public places, crowds, transport, or even just being far from home. It’s not always about the space itself, but how the situation makes you feel.
Can hypnotherapy help with agoraphobia?
Yes, hypnotherapy for agoraphobia works by helping your brain respond differently to the situations that currently trigger anxiety. Instead of feeling overwhelmed or panicked, your mind begins to feel calmer, safer, and more in control.
How many sessions will I need?
Every person is different, but many clients notice a shift within a few sessions of treatment for agoraphobia. Typically, 3 – 6 sessions work well, depending on how the agoraphobia shows up and how long it’s been going on.
Do I have to leave the house for sessions?
No, all sessions are held online via Zoom, so you can start from the comfort of your own home. As one of the best treatments for agoraphobia, hypnosis sessions can be done virtually from a comforting and calm place like your home. Many clients find this helps them feel more at ease, especially in the early stages of working on your agoraphobia.
Will I need to revisit the past or talk about everything in detail?
No, my approach is solution-focused, which means we concentrate on how you want things to be going forward. You’re welcome to share anything that feels relevant, but there’s no need to revisit anything in detail unless you want to.
What does hypnotherapy for agrophobia feel like?
Hypnosis is a deeply relaxed, focused state, almost like being in a daydream. You stay fully aware and in control, but your mind becomes more open to positive suggestions that help shift unhelpful patterns and build new, calmer responses.
What if I have panic attacks? Can you help with that, too?
Yes, panic is often part of agoraphobia, and we can work on calming the panic response as part of your sessions. The aim is to help your brain feel safer and more balanced, so that the fight-or-flight response stops kicking in unnecessarily.
