What hypnotherapy for procrastination can help with

Putting things off can bring short-term relief, followed by stress, guilt and last-minute panic. Hypnotherapy for procrastination and motivation can help with:

  • putting off important tasks
  • difficulty getting started
  • low motivation
  • feeling overwhelmed by your to-do list
  • last-minute rushes before deadlines
  • getting distracted by your phone
  • starting projects, then losing momentum
  • sticking to exercise or study plans

It aims to help you feel motivated, focused and ready to get things done.

How hypnotherapy for procrastination works

We begin with what you are putting off and how you would like things to be different. That might mean starting a report without an evening of worry, revising steadily or making time for exercise.

Hypnosis combines focused attention, relaxation, imagery and therapeutic suggestions. We explore self-critical thoughts and beliefs such as “I will only get it wrong”, and rehearse a calmer, more encouraging response to getting started. Small practical steps help you bring that work into daily life.

My appointment with susannah has gone very very well, I have now been off the weed habit for over a month now, she has taken away my want to smoke it and some of the issues that go with it when you stop smoking it, I cannot thank this lady enough for giving me a new start, the voice notes that you will get after your appointment help so much, I listen to them every night before bed, now I only need to listen to them every now and then, not once have I wanted to go and get some (w) and it is all down to the appointment I had with susannah, highly recommend if you have the problem that I had, tried to give up myself but always gave in to it, I have a new life now and getting a lot done, sleeping is good and have saved a lot of money not smoking it, thinking more clearly now too, I’m so please as it’s been a habit of mine for many many years, I couldn’t have done this without her help and I’m so grateful, she is there if you need extra help too x

I’ve been working with Susannah for several months to work on my insomnia issues. After a few sessions we discovered I was also mildly depressed and we have been working together to try and fix the issues I was experiencing. In just 6 weeks I’ve gone from a fragment of myself to an inspired, vibrant person again and I’m so thrilled with the results. Susannah’s hypnotherapy sessions are beautiful and she really works with you to become better. Highly recommend her to anyone!

Highly recommended. It is very easy to communicate with Susannah and Susannah transmits positive vibes. Clearly Susannah focus is the well being of her patients. I gave up vaping in one session, no craving and no need to substitute by something else. This helps me to open a new chapter in my life without the servitude of smoking/vaping. 100% success as far as I am concerned. Would turn to Susannah again for what ever my needs are in the future.

I have been on quite the journey with Susannah. For so many years so many aspects of my life seemed to be causing me anxiety and anger, making me too exhausted to complete simple, everyday tasks, that seemed straightforward to other people. I couldn’t imagine things would improve without months of therapy at least. Working with Susannah however made me understand that it was my perception of my life rather than the events of my life that needed addressing, and this made finding solutions so much more manageable. Right from the first session things started to improve, and as it turned out, in total I needed only five sessions.

Susannah has a gift for explaining complex functions of the brain in a super-accessible way, so that I now both understand what was going wrong and have developed strategies to support me in preventing the build-up of stress and anxiety in the future. I cannot think of an area of my life that has not been positively impacted by my time with Susannah and cannot recommend her highly enough.

I would like to start my review with thanking Susannah. I was sceptical, but went in with an open mind. I had one session of hypnosis to help quit smoking. I was a person that could stop and start but I wanted to quit for good. My session was at the beginning of Feb and so far so good. I feel a lot better health wise also helped motivate me to consistently go to the gym and generally take better care of myself. If your thinking about doing it, go for it, best decision I’ve made.

I got in touch with Susannah after yet another flight that made me feel sick and traumatised. Living overseas is great until you begin to have a fear or flying which impacts your ability to travel with your husband and also for work. Since spending time with Susannah i have been able to fly a total of 4 times in the last 2 weeks and havent gotten upset or fearful like i used too once – im now able to fly and the worst thing that happens is i get bored!! 🙂 I cant thank Susannah enough for helping me with this fear! Also, and i think no coincidence, i am far calmer in my day to day life. I absolutely never thought id be able to get off of a plane and go in to the office, instead of needing a sleep and a drink to get through it!!! Absolutely changed my life – long may it continue.

I’m a 33yo woman. I’ve struggled most of my life with low mood/depression and anxiety. I came to Susannah looking for help in changing my unhealthy habits and mindset.
I can’t even tell you exactly what has changed since my 3 hypnotherapy sessions, only that something in me has shifted, I feel better, more content, positive and lighter and I’m making better choices.
After the first session it felt like something in my brain moved, for the better. I was really sceptical going in to this, especially as the sessions were online, but it worked.
Would definitely recommend Susannah, the sessions aren’t cheap but was worth every penny to me.

Can’t recommend Susannah enough!
3 months down and I’ve not touched a vape
Or even thought about it.
I will be honest, I was sceptical about hypno previously but it’s been such a great experience.
My life has changed so positively since that session.

I recently had 3 sessions of hypnotherapy with Susannah to help with a fear of flying that had been causing me anxiety, and tainting my experience of travel and holidays for many years. This was my first experience of hypnotherapy, and it was an extremely positive and beneficial one, as I have since been on multiple flights without that old anxiety, and free of the accompanying tension and fear. This is entirely down to Susannah’s calming, patient manner and extremely insightful techniques. I can’t recommend her services highly enough. Thank you so so much Susannah!

What is procrastination?

Procrastination means delaying tasks you intend to do, even when you know it will make things harder later. It is often mistaken for laziness, yet it is usually linked to stress, worry or self-doubt.

Most people put things off from time to time. Procrastination hypnotherapy can help when it starts to affect your work, health or relationships.

Signs of procrastination

Common signs of procrastination include:

  • doing easy tasks to avoid harder ones
  • waiting until you feel in the mood
  • tidying, emailing or scrolling when you mean to work
  • relying on deadline pressure to get going
  • starting lots of projects and finishing few
  • missing deadlines or asking for extensions
  • feeling guilty about unfinished tasks
  • putting off appointments, bills or difficult conversations

If several of these sound familiar, hypnotherapy for procrastination may help.

Why we procrastinate

Procrastination is often a way of avoiding uncomfortable feelings. A task might feel boring, difficult or uncertain, or it might stir up a fear of failure.

Putting it off brings a moment of relief, which the subconscious learns to repeat. Over time, the habit can become automatic, even for tasks you want to do.

Hypnotherapy for motivation

Motivation can seem like something you either have or lack. Often, it grows once you have started, as small steps build momentum.

Low motivation can follow stress, tiredness or a long period of pressure. Hypnotherapy for motivation aims to help you feel energised and focused, so acting on your plans feels easier.

Hypnosis for procrastination and getting started

Getting started is often the hardest part. A task can feel huge in your head, while the first step may take only a few minutes.

Hypnosis for procrastination aims to make that first step feel easier and more natural. Rehearsing it in hypnosis can help it feel familiar before you begin.

Procrastination, perfectionism and fear of failure

For many people, procrastination is linked to fear of failure. If a task has to be done perfectly, delaying it can feel safer than risking falling short.

Hypnotherapy aims to calm this fear, so you can start with confidence and feel good about your progress. My page on perfectionism and fear of failure has more on this.

Read more about perfectionism and fear of failure.

Hypnotherapy for feeling overwhelmed

A long to-do list can feel so overwhelming that it is hard to know where to begin. Some people freeze, while others keep busy with small tasks and avoid the big ones.

Hypnotherapy for overwhelm aims to help you feel calm and clear-headed, so you can prioritise and take one step at a time.

Read more about support for ADHD, stress and overwhelm.

Hypnotherapy for procrastination at work

At work, procrastination can mean late reports, rushed presentations and long evenings catching up. Business owners and the self-employed, who set their own deadlines, can find it especially hard to get going.

Hypnotherapy for procrastination at work aims to help you feel focused and productive, so you can start tasks promptly and meet deadlines calmly.

Hypnosis for study motivation

Students often put off revision, essays and dissertations until the pressure builds. Exams and deadlines can then bring stress, late nights and cramming.

Hypnosis for study motivation aims to help you focus, revise steadily and feel calm as exams approach. It can also help adults returning to study or working towards professional exams.

Hypnotherapy for exercise motivation

Many people want to exercise more, yet find it hard to keep going after the first few weeks. Busy days, tiredness and feeling self-conscious can all get in the way.

Sessions can focus on what movement means to you, the obstacles you meet and a routine that fits your life. We can rehearse taking the first manageable step and making activity feel more inviting, rather than another test to pass.

Hypnosis for focus and concentration

Phones, emails and notifications make it easy to drift away from a task. Each interruption can make it harder to settle back into focused work.

Hypnosis for focus aims to help you concentrate for longer and return to a task with ease.

Read more about confidence and self-esteem.

Procrastination, stress and low mood

When you feel under pressure, even a small task can seem difficult to face. Avoiding it may bring a moment of relief, followed by more worry as it remains unfinished. Tiredness and poor sleep can add to this cycle.

In solution-focused work, the “stress bucket” is a helpful metaphor for accumulated pressure. We work on lowering stress, making space for rest and building manageable steps towards your goals. If low motivation comes with persistent low mood or changes in sleep, your GP can help you explore what else may be contributing.

How procrastination affects daily life

Procrastination can touch many parts of life. Bills, appointments, emails and household jobs can all pile up.

Many people feel guilty or frustrated with themselves, which can make starting even harder. Over time, it can affect confidence, sleep and relationships.

Who procrastination hypnotherapy can help

Procrastination hypnotherapy can help many different people, including:

  • students with revision, essays or dissertations
  • professionals with deadlines and reports
  • business owners and the self-employed
  • creatives who want to start or finish projects
  • people who want to exercise regularly
  • those who put off admin, bills or appointments
  • people who feel stuck or unmotivated
  • anyone who relies on last-minute panic to get going

It can help whether procrastination affects one area of your life or several.

The beliefs behind procrastination

Beliefs such as “I work best under pressure”, “I will do it when I feel like it” or “I will only get it wrong” can make delaying feel like the obvious choice. Calling yourself lazy can add guilt without helping you begin.

We explore how these expectations affect your actions and practise more flexible responses. You can learn to start before everything feels ideal, choose a manageable next step and recognise progress as it happens.

Procrastination, hypnosis and the subconscious mind

Subconscious is a useful word for learned responses that feel automatic. You may reach for your phone or find another job to do as soon as a task feels uncomfortable, before you have consciously decided to avoid it.

Hypnosis uses focused attention, imagery and tailored suggestions to work with these associations. We can rehearse approaching a task calmly, staying with the first few minutes and noticing the satisfaction of making progress.

What motivation hypnosis feels like

Hypnosis is a natural, relaxed state, similar to daydreaming or the moment before sleep. You stay aware of what is happening and in control throughout.

Motivation hypnosis is a clinical process, very different from stage hypnosis. Most people find it very relaxing, and you may leave feeling clear-headed and ready to get going.

Techniques used in hypnotherapy for procrastination and motivation

Hypnotherapy for procrastination draws on many techniques, tailored to you. Depending on what you need, sessions can include:

  • lowering overall stress and anxiety
  • working on the beliefs behind procrastination
  • positive suggestion to build motivation and focus
  • linking tasks with a sense of calm and achievement
  • helping big tasks feel more manageable
  • taking the emotional charge out of past setbacks or criticism
  • building your ability to focus for longer
  • self-hypnosis to use before you start a task
  • rehearsing getting started and following through, where helpful

Each session uses the techniques that suit you at that stage.

Is hypnotherapy for procrastination right for you?

Hypnotherapy can suit people who want support with the stress, self-doubt or habits that make acting on their plans difficult. You can bring one specific task or a pattern that affects several areas of life.

We work together on goals that matter to you, with space to discuss what feels manageable. Practising with your personalised recording between sessions supports the work we do together.

Choosing a hypnotherapist for procrastination and motivation

When choosing a hypnotherapist for procrastination and motivation, look for recognised qualifications and experience of working with stress and anxiety. It also helps to feel comfortable with the person you choose, and an initial consultation is a good chance to ask questions.

I hold the SQHP and HPD qualifications and have been practising as a clinical hypnotherapist since 2003.

The benefits of hypnotherapy for procrastination and motivation

Hypnotherapy for procrastination aims to help you get started, keep going and enjoy the results. Benefits can include:

  • getting started with ease
  • feeling motivated and energised
  • better focus and concentration
  • meeting deadlines calmly
  • making steady progress on your goals
  • exercising regularly
  • relaxing with a clear conscience
  • feeling proud of what you achieve

If you would like help with procrastination or motivation, contact me to find out more or book your initial consultation.

Research supporting work on anxiety and stress

A 2019 meta-analysis by Valentine and colleagues found that hypnosis reduced anxiety across the studies reviewed, with stronger effects when combined with other psychological interventions. A 2020 randomised trial by Fisch and colleagues found reduced perceived stress following a group hypnosis programme with home recordings and educational material.

These findings relate to anxiety and stress. Working on those feelings is relevant when worry, pressure or fear of getting something wrong makes starting a task difficult. In sessions, we connect that work with your own goals and everyday routines.

Procrastination and motivation: frequently asked questions

Answers about getting started, focus, work, study, motivation hypnosis and appointments in London or online.

Understanding procrastination and motivation

What is procrastination?

Procrastination means delaying something you intend to do, even when the delay is likely to create more difficulty later. It can involve work, study, exercise or everyday admin. Often the task brings up discomfort, uncertainty or pressure, and doing something else provides short-term relief.

Why do I procrastinate even when a task matters to me?

A task can matter deeply and still feel difficult to begin. Worry about the outcome, an unclear starting point or the size of the job can make avoidance feel easier in the moment. We explore your particular pattern and practise approaching the task in smaller, more manageable steps.

Is procrastination the same as laziness?

Procrastination does not automatically mean you are lazy. Many people who delay tasks care about doing them and feel frustrated when they put them off. Stress, tiredness, perfectionism and difficulty organising a task can all contribute. Understanding the obstacle is more useful than criticising yourself.

What are common signs of procrastination?

Common signs include doing easier jobs instead of the important one, scrolling when you mean to work, waiting to feel ready and relying on a deadline to start. You may begin many projects but finish few, postpone appointments or feel guilty whenever you try to rest.

What is the connection between procrastination and anxiety?

Anxiety can make a task feel threatening, especially if you expect criticism, failure or uncertainty. Avoiding the task may briefly ease that feeling while increasing pressure later. Hypnotherapy can support work on the anxious expectations and self-talk that keep this cycle going.

Can perfectionism cause procrastination?

Perfectionism can make starting feel risky: if the result has to be flawless, a first draft may seem unacceptable. You may wait for the ideal time or keep preparing instead of beginning. Sessions can focus on allowing an imperfect first step and recognising progress without constantly grading yourself.

Can ADHD be linked with procrastination?

Yes. ADHD can involve difficulties with initiating tasks, organising priorities, estimating time and regulating attention. These difficulties can look like procrastination. Hypnotherapy sessions can support related stress, confidence and routines alongside any ADHD care you receive. Speak with a qualified clinician if you would like an ADHD assessment.

What if my low motivation comes with low mood or exhaustion?

Persistent low mood, marked tiredness or a noticeable loss of interest deserves attention. Your GP can help explore possible contributors and suitable support. We can also discuss how hypnotherapy might fit alongside that care, focusing on stress, confidence and manageable goals rather than adding more pressure.

Getting started, focus and follow-through

Can hypnotherapy help with procrastination?

Hypnotherapy can help you work on the stress, self-doubt and learned habits that make getting started difficult. We identify what happens around the tasks you avoid and use hypnosis, imagery and tailored suggestions to practise a calmer response. Practical goals help connect the sessions with everyday action.

How can hypnosis support motivation?

Motivation hypnosis uses focused attention and personalised suggestions to connect your goals with the actions you want to take. We explore what matters to you, reduce pressure around starting and rehearse following through. The work can include building a routine that feels realistic and rewarding.

Can you help if I find starting harder than doing the task?

Yes. We can focus specifically on the moments before you begin: the thoughts, feelings and distractions that show up. In hypnosis, we can rehearse opening the document, putting on your walking shoes or taking another small first step, so the beginning feels more familiar and manageable.

Why do I only get things done under deadline pressure?

An approaching deadline can temporarily make the next action feel clear and urgent. Relying on that pressure can also mean rushed work, worry and difficulty switching off. Sessions can explore the beliefs behind this pattern and rehearse beginning earlier with a steadier sense of purpose.

Can hypnotherapy help with feeling overwhelmed by a to-do list?

Sessions can support a calmer response when everything feels equally urgent. We can work on the pressure to do it all, decide what matters first and practise taking one step at a time. A manageable starting point can be more useful than another elaborate productivity system.

Can hypnosis help me focus and concentrate?

Hypnosis can support work on the stress, anxious thoughts and distracting habits that interrupt concentration. We can rehearse settling into one task and returning to it after an interruption. We also consider practical changes, such as a quieter workspace and a clear next step.

Can you help with phone scrolling and distractions?

Yes. We can explore the moments when you reach for your phone, such as boredom, uncertainty or feeling stuck. Hypnosis can include rehearsal of noticing that urge and choosing how to respond. Practical boundaries around notifications and phone access can support the changes you want to make.

Can hypnotherapy help me finish projects instead of constantly starting new ones?

We can work on what happens when the initial excitement fades or finishing brings a fear of judgement. Sessions can focus on choosing priorities, staying with manageable steps and recognising when something is complete. Your goals can include sharing work or letting go of projects you no longer want.

Work, study, exercise and everyday life

Do you offer hypnotherapy for procrastination at work?

Yes. Sessions can focus on reports, presentations, emails and other tasks that create avoidance or last-minute pressure. We explore the feelings and expectations attached to them and rehearse a more settled way to begin and follow through. London and online appointments are available.

Can you help business owners and self-employed people with motivation?

Yes. Setting your own priorities and deadlines can feel difficult when you carry many responsibilities. We can work on avoidance, decision-making pressure and confidence, then connect the hypnosis with practical goals. That might mean beginning a proposal, handling admin or making time for important work.

Can hypnosis help with study motivation and revision?

Sessions can support work on the stress and self-doubt that make revision, essays or professional exams difficult to approach. We can rehearse settling into a study session and working in manageable stages. The focus includes a sustainable routine with space for sleep, breaks and life outside study.

Can you help with dissertation or thesis procrastination?

Yes. A large academic project can feel vague and intimidating, particularly when you care about the result. We can explore fear of criticism, perfectionism or feeling behind, then rehearse a manageable next action. The work supports beginning and continuing without needing to solve the entire project at once.

Do you work with students?

I support people with study-related stress, confidence and motivation, including adults taking professional exams or returning to education. If you are enquiring for a younger student, contact me with their age and circumstances so we can discuss suitable support and arrangements.

Can hypnotherapy help creatives with motivation or a mental block?

Sessions can focus on the pressure, fear of judgement or self-criticism that gets in the way of creative work. Hypnosis can include rehearsal of experimenting, making a rough first version and returning to the project. The aim is to make room for curiosity and progress.

Can hypnosis support exercise motivation?

Hypnosis can support work on the thoughts and habits that make movement easy to postpone. We can connect activity with your own reasons for doing it and rehearse a realistic first step. Your goal might be enjoying regular walks or returning to a routine that fits your circumstances.

Can you help with putting off bills, appointments or difficult conversations?

Yes. Procrastination often affects ordinary tasks as well as major goals. We can explore what makes a particular job uncomfortable, such as worry about bad news or conflict, and practise approaching it calmly. Sessions focus on the actions that would make a useful difference to your life.

We talk about the tasks you avoid, how the pattern affects you and what you want to change. I explain the approach and answer your questions. Your first appointment includes hypnosis as well as the consultation, so we begin the therapeutic work during that session.

What does motivation hypnosis feel like?

Hypnosis can feel like calm, absorbed attention, with your focus on my voice, imagery or the suggestions we use. You do not need to empty your mind or create a particular sensation. We discuss the process beforehand and adapt it around how you experience the session.

Will I remain aware and in control during hypnosis?

Yes. Hypnosis is a collaborative process, and you can speak, ask questions or stop at any time. You remain involved in the work and the goals we agree. Clinical hypnotherapy is different from a stage performance; the session centres on your concerns and comfort.

What if I struggle to relax or my mind wanders?

You can tell me, and we adapt the approach. A wandering mind does not mean you have done anything wrong, and there is no need to perform relaxation perfectly. We can work with the thoughts or pressure that appear and help you engage at a pace that feels comfortable.

How many hypnotherapy sessions will I need for procrastination?

We discuss a plan after understanding your goals and how the pattern affects you. We review progress together using practical examples, such as beginning tasks more easily or reducing last-minute panic. You can contact me to talk through your circumstances and possible next steps.

Will I receive a personalised hypnosis recording?

Yes. You receive a personalised recording of your session to listen to between appointments. It supports practice with the suggestions, imagery and relaxation we have used together. Listen in a safe, quiet place where you can relax fully, never while driving or doing anything that needs alertness.

Can I use self-hypnosis before starting a task?

We can discuss a short self-hypnosis or relaxation practice that fits your needs. Used in a safe setting, it can provide a pause to settle anxious thoughts and focus on your next step. We keep the routine manageable so preparation does not become another way to delay starting.

Is there research supporting hypnosis for stress and anxiety?

A 2019 meta-analysis found reduced anxiety across the hypnosis studies reviewed, and a 2020 randomised trial found reduced perceived stress after a group hypnosis programme. These studies concern anxiety and stress, which are relevant when pressure or worry contributes to avoiding tasks. The research section links to the original papers.
