What hypnotherapy for fertility and birth can help with

From trying to conceive to giving birth, this time can bring hope, worry and strong emotions. Hypnotherapy for fertility and birth can help with:

  • stress and anxiety while trying to conceive
  • the emotional ups and downs of IVF and fertility treatment
  • anxiety about medical procedures and needles
  • the two-week wait
  • anxiety in pregnancy, including after a loss
  • fear of childbirth
  • preparing for a calm, confident birth
  • worries after a difficult previous birth

It focuses on how you feel and cope, alongside the medical care you receive.

How hypnotherapy for fertility and birth works

We begin with what you are facing and how you would like to feel: less overwhelmed during IVF, more settled between scans or more confident about birth. Your goals and stage of care guide the sessions.

Relaxation, focused attention, imagery and therapeutic suggestions can help you work with anxious expectations and self-critical thoughts. We practise manageable ways to respond to uncertainty and review what is helping you.

Working with a hypnotherapist for fertility and birth

Working with a hypnotherapist for fertility and birth starts with an initial consultation. In this first session, we talk about your situation and what you would like help with.

I explain the approach, answer your questions and agree suitable goals with you. Your first appointment includes hypnosis as well as the consultation, tailored to your needs.

My approach is solution-focused, so we concentrate on how you want to feel and build on the progress you make.

What happens in a fertility or birth hypnotherapy session

Each session after the first starts with a short conversation about what has gone well since we last spoke. Most of the session is hypnosis, using the techniques that suit you.

After each session, you receive a personalised recording to practise with between appointments. We discuss when and how to use it comfortably. During treatment or labour, follow your care team’s instructions and remain able to hear them. Never listen while driving or doing anything that needs your full attention.

My appointment with susannah has gone very very well, I have now been off the weed habit for over a month now, she has taken away my want to smoke it and some of the issues that go with it when you stop smoking it, I cannot thank this lady enough for giving me a new start, the voice notes that you will get after your appointment help so much, I listen to them every night before bed, now I only need to listen to them every now and then, not once have I wanted to go and get some (w) and it is all down to the appointment I had with susannah, highly recommend if you have the problem that I had, tried to give up myself but always gave in to it, I have a new life now and getting a lot done, sleeping is good and have saved a lot of money not smoking it, thinking more clearly now too, I’m so please as it’s been a habit of mine for many many years, I couldn’t have done this without her help and I’m so grateful, she is there if you need extra help too x

I’ve been working with Susannah for several months to work on my insomnia issues. After a few sessions we discovered I was also mildly depressed and we have been working together to try and fix the issues I was experiencing. In just 6 weeks I’ve gone from a fragment of myself to an inspired, vibrant person again and I’m so thrilled with the results. Susannah’s hypnotherapy sessions are beautiful and she really works with you to become better. Highly recommend her to anyone!

Highly recommended. It is very easy to communicate with Susannah and Susannah transmits positive vibes. Clearly Susannah focus is the well being of her patients. I gave up vaping in one session, no craving and no need to substitute by something else. This helps me to open a new chapter in my life without the servitude of smoking/vaping. 100% success as far as I am concerned. Would turn to Susannah again for what ever my needs are in the future.

I have been on quite the journey with Susannah. For so many years so many aspects of my life seemed to be causing me anxiety and anger, making me too exhausted to complete simple, everyday tasks, that seemed straightforward to other people. I couldn’t imagine things would improve without months of therapy at least. Working with Susannah however made me understand that it was my perception of my life rather than the events of my life that needed addressing, and this made finding solutions so much more manageable. Right from the first session things started to improve, and as it turned out, in total I needed only five sessions.Susannah has a gift for explaining complex functions of the brain in a super-accessible way, so that I now both understand what was going wrong and have developed strategies to support me in preventing the build-up of stress and anxiety in the future. I cannot think of an area of my life that has not been positively impacted by my time with Susannah and cannot recommend her highly enough.

I would like to start my review with thanking Susannah. I was sceptical, but went in with an open mind. I had one session of hypnosis to help quit smoking. I was a person that could stop and start but I wanted to quit for good. My session was at the beginning of Feb and so far so good. I feel a lot better health wise also helped motivate me to consistently go to the gym and generally take better care of myself. If your thinking about doing it, go for it, best decision I’ve made.

I got in touch with Susannah after yet another flight that made me feel sick and traumatised. Living overseas is great until you begin to have a fear or flying which impacts your ability to travel with your husband and also for work. Since spending time with Susannah i have been able to fly a total of 4 times in the last 2 weeks and havent gotten upset or fearful like i used too once – im now able to fly and the worst thing that happens is i get bored!! 🙂 I cant thank Susannah enough for helping me with this fear! Also, and i think no coincidence, i am far calmer in my day to day life. I absolutely never thought id be able to get off of a plane and go in to the office, instead of needing a sleep and a drink to get through it!!! Absolutely changed my life – long may it continue.

I’m a 33yo woman. I’ve struggled most of my life with low mood/depression and anxiety. I came to Susannah looking for help in changing my unhealthy habits and mindset. I can’t even tell you exactly what has changed since my 3 hypnotherapy sessions, only that something in me has shifted, I feel better, more content, positive and lighter and I’m making better choices. After the first session it felt like something in my brain moved, for the better. I was really sceptical going in to this, especially as the sessions were online, but it worked. Would definitely recommend Susannah, the sessions aren’t cheap but was worth every penny to me.

Can’t recommend Susannah enough! 3 months down and I’ve not touched a vape Or even thought about it. I will be honest, I was sceptical about hypno previously but it’s been such a great experience. My life has changed so positively since that session.

I recently had 3 sessions of hypnotherapy with Susannah to help with a fear of flying that had been causing me anxiety, and tainting my experience of travel and holidays for many years. This was my first experience of hypnotherapy, and it was an extremely positive and beneficial one, as I have since been on multiple flights without that old anxiety, and free of the accompanying tension and fear. This is entirely down to Susannah’s calming, patient manner and extremely insightful techniques. I can’t recommend her services highly enough. Thank you so so much Susannah!

Fertility hypnotherapy: what it can and cannot do

Fertility hypnotherapy focuses on your emotional wellbeing: the stress, worry and disappointment that trying to conceive can bring. It does not treat the medical causes of fertility problems or promise a pregnancy. Feeling anxious does not mean you have caused a fertility problem or failed to relax enough.

If you have concerns about your fertility, speak to your GP or fertility clinic. Sessions can support how you feel and cope alongside their investigations, advice and treatment.

The emotional strain of trying to conceive

Trying to conceive can bring hope and disappointment month after month. It can affect your mood, your relationship and how you feel about your body.

Pregnancy announcements, baby showers and questions from family can all be painful. Well-meaning advice to 'just relax' rarely helps, and can add to the pressure. Hypnotherapy for fertility aims to ease this strain, so the process feels more manageable.

Read more about individual support with relationship worries.

Hypnotherapy for IVF and fertility treatment

IVF and other fertility treatments can be physically and emotionally demanding. Injections, scans, egg collection and embryo transfer can all bring anxiety, especially if you dislike needles or medical procedures.

Hypnotherapy for IVF aims to help you feel calmer and more in control at each stage of treatment. It can also help you cope if a cycle does not work.

Hypnosis for the two-week wait

The wait between ovulation or embryo transfer and a pregnancy test can feel very long. Many people find it one of the hardest parts, with every twinge analysed and sleep disrupted by worry.

Hypnosis for the two-week wait aims to calm the worry, so you can rest and take each day as it comes.

Hypnotherapy for pregnancy after loss

After a miscarriage or baby loss, a new pregnancy can bring hope and fear at the same time. It can be hard to relax until each scan or milestone has passed.

Hypnotherapy for pregnancy after loss aims to ease this anxiety and help you feel more present in your pregnancy. Charities such as Tommy's and the Miscarriage Association also offer support.

Hypnotherapy for pregnancy anxiety

Many people worry during pregnancy, about the baby's health, scans, the birth or becoming a parent. When the worry is constant, it can affect your sleep and your enjoyment of pregnancy.

Hypnotherapy for pregnancy anxiety aims to calm these worries, so you can feel more settled. If you feel very anxious or low, speak to your midwife or GP, as specialist support is available during and after pregnancy.

Read more about hypnotherapy for anxiety.

Hypnotherapy for fear of childbirth (tokophobia)

A fear of childbirth, sometimes called tokophobia, can be so intense that some people avoid pregnancy or dread the birth for months. It may come from stories you have heard, a fear of pain or a previous difficult birth.

Hypnotherapy for fear of childbirth aims to calm this fear at a subconscious level, so you can approach the birth with more confidence. If your fear is severe, tell your midwife or GP, who can refer you for extra support.

Hypnotherapy for birth and hypnobirthing

Hypnotherapy for birth uses techniques similar to hypnobirthing, such as relaxation, breathing and visualisation, tailored to you. The aim is to help you feel calm, prepared and more in control, however your baby arrives.

It can be helpful whether you are planning a vaginal birth, an induction or a caesarean. You can also share some of the techniques with your birth partner, so they know how to support you.

Hypnotherapy after a difficult birth

If a previous birth was frightening, another pregnancy may bring back worry or a sense of lost control. We can focus on feeling steadier now, identifying what would help you feel supported and preparing questions for your maternity team.

You do not have to describe distressing events in detail. If you have flashbacks, nightmares or severe distress, speak to your GP or midwife about specialist perinatal or trauma support. We discuss whether hypnotherapy is appropriate alongside that care.

Who fertility and birth hypnotherapy can help

Fertility and birth hypnotherapy can help many different people, including:

  • couples and individuals trying to conceive
  • people going through IVF, IUI or egg freezing
  • same-sex couples and solo parents using fertility treatment
  • partners who want support through treatment
  • people pregnant after a miscarriage or loss
  • anyone who feels anxious about pregnancy or birth
  • people preparing for birth after a difficult experience

It can help at any stage, from trying to conceive to the final weeks of pregnancy.

The fears and beliefs that can build up

Trying to conceive can bring thoughts such as “my body has let me down” or “it will never happen for us”. Birth worries may sound like “I won’t cope” or “I won’t be listened to”. These thoughts can feel powerful even when you try to reassure yourself.

We can work with self-criticism, anxious expectations and familiar reactions, practising kinder and more helpful ways of responding. You do not need to stay positive all the time, and difficult thoughts do not determine your fertility or birth outcome.

Fertility, birth and the subconscious mind

Waiting for results, attending appointments or thinking about labour can bring tension before you have time to think it through. When I talk about the subconscious, I mean these familiar expectations and automatic responses.

Hypnosis uses focused attention, imagery and therapeutic suggestions to practise more helpful responses. The aim is to support comfort, confidence and coping, while your medical team looks after your fertility, pregnancy and birth.

What fertility and birth hypnosis feels like

Hypnosis involves focused attention and may feel relaxed or absorbed, a little like daydreaming. You remain able to speak, move, keep your eyes open or stop. You do not have to relax perfectly for us to work together.

Sessions are collaborative and non-judgemental. We agree the exercises, choose a comfortable position and adapt the pace to your needs, including any advice from your maternity or fertility team.

Techniques used in fertility and birth hypnotherapy

Sessions are tailored to you and may include:

  • relaxation to ease everyday tension
  • comfortable breathing and grounding for anxious moments
  • visualisation to rehearse appointments or birth preparations
  • therapeutic suggestions to support confidence
  • working with self-critical thoughts and fears
  • practising ways to ask questions and express preferences
  • self-hypnosis to use between sessions
  • calming routines for the two-week wait or bedtime

We agree exercises together. You do not have to relive a loss or a difficult birth, and hypnosis is not used to recover supposedly hidden memories.

Fertility and birth hypnotherapy alongside medical care

Fertility and birth hypnotherapy works alongside the care you receive from your GP, fertility clinic or midwife. It does not replace medical advice, and any decisions about treatment or birth should be made with your care team.

If you have any concerns during pregnancy, such as reduced movements or bleeding, contact your midwife or maternity unit straight away.

When to start hypnotherapy for birth

Starting a few months before your due date gives you time to practise and become familiar with the techniques. You can also enquire later in pregnancy; we will discuss what is realistic for the time available.

For fertility support, you can start whenever you feel ready, before treatment, during a cycle or while deciding what comes next.

Is hypnotherapy for fertility and birth right for you?

This approach may suit you if you would like individual support with the emotional side of trying to conceive, fertility treatment, pregnancy or birth preparation. We discuss your needs, preferences and any existing care before starting.

Practice between sessions can help you become familiar with the techniques. We keep it manageable: a missed recording or an anxious day is not a failure.

Choosing a hypnotherapist for fertility and birth

When choosing a hypnotherapist for fertility and birth, look for recognised qualifications and experience of working with stress and anxiety. It also helps to feel comfortable with the person you choose, as this can be a sensitive time. An initial consultation is a good chance to ask questions.

I hold the SQHP and HPD qualifications and have been practising as a clinical hypnotherapist since 2003.

The benefits of hypnotherapy for fertility and birth

Hypnotherapy for fertility and birth aims to help you feel calmer and more in control. Benefits can include:

  • less stress and anxiety while trying to conceive
  • feeling calmer during treatment and procedures
  • coping better with the two-week wait
  • more restful sleep
  • feeling more present and settled in pregnancy
  • less fear of childbirth
  • feeling prepared and confident for the birth
  • techniques you can use in labour

If you would like help with fertility or birth, contact me to find out more or book your initial consultation.

Research and guidance on anxiety and birth preparation

A 2019 meta-analysis by Valentine and colleagues reviewed 15 studies containing 17 trials and found benefits from hypnosis for reducing anxiety. Effects were stronger when hypnosis was combined with other psychological approaches. These findings concern anxiety relief, which is the focus of this emotional support.

NHS guidance on preparing for labour includes practising breathing and relaxation to help with calm and coping. Birth preparation can include these skills alongside your antenatal care and preferred pain relief.

The HFEA’s guide to emotional support explains options such as clinic counselling and peer support during fertility treatment. Your wellbeing deserves attention at every stage, whatever the outcome.

Fertility and birth hypnotherapy: frequently asked questions

Answers about trying to conceive, IVF, pregnancy anxiety, birth preparation and appointments in London or online.

Fertility and trying to conceive

What is fertility hypnotherapy?

Fertility hypnotherapy is emotional support for people trying to conceive or having fertility treatment. Sessions focus on worry, tension, self-criticism and coping with uncertainty. They can sit alongside care from your GP or fertility clinic, helping you work towards feeling steadier during a demanding time.

Can hypnotherapy improve my chances of becoming pregnant?

The purpose of these sessions is to support emotional wellbeing, not to increase pregnancy rates or treat the medical causes of fertility problems. Hypnotherapy cannot promise conception. You can seek support for stress and anxiety while your fertility team advises you about investigations and treatment.

Have I caused fertility problems by feeling stressed?

You should not blame yourself for feeling stressed or struggling to stay positive. Fertility problems and treatment can be emotionally demanding. The HFEA explains that evidence does not show that people with higher stress levels are less likely to have a baby through fertility treatment. Support is for your wellbeing, not a test of how well you relax.

Can I have hypnotherapy before starting fertility treatment?

Yes. You can enquire while trying to conceive, waiting for a referral or preparing for treatment. Sessions can focus on uncertainty, appointments, sleep or confidence in asking questions. You do not need to wait until treatment begins to ask for emotional support.

Can hypnotherapy help with the disappointment of trying to conceive?

Sessions can offer space to work with sadness, frustration and the repeated cycle of hope and disappointment. We can practise ways to respond to difficult moments with less self-criticism. You do not have to suppress your feelings or pretend to be positive.

Can we work on pregnancy announcements and family questions?

Yes. We can explore what makes these situations difficult and rehearse responses that respect your privacy and feelings. This might include choosing what to say, setting limits or deciding which events feel manageable. You can care about other people and still need space for yourself.

Is fertility hypnotherapy available for partners and men?

Yes. Partners and men can seek individual emotional support with fertility worries, treatment pressures and uncertainty. Sessions focus on your own feelings and coping needs. This is not treatment for sperm problems or other medical causes of infertility, which need appropriate clinical advice.

Can same-sex couples and solo parents enquire?

Yes. Individual support is available whatever your family structure or route to parenthood. You can discuss the emotional pressures of donor treatment, fertility appointments, uncertainty or preparing for birth. Contact me about your circumstances so we can agree the most suitable format.

IVF, procedures and the two-week wait

How can hypnotherapy support me during IVF?

Hypnotherapy can focus on the emotional demands of IVF: anticipating appointments, feeling overwhelmed, worrying about results or struggling to switch off. We can rehearse manageable coping responses and practise calming techniques. Your fertility clinic continues to guide all medical decisions and treatment.

Can I use hypnotherapy alongside IUI or egg freezing?

Yes, you can enquire about emotional support during IUI, egg freezing or other fertility treatment. The focus may be procedure anxiety, uncertainty or decisions that feel emotionally difficult. Sessions are adapted to your stage of care and do not change your clinic’s instructions.

Can hypnosis help with anxiety about fertility injections?

We can work with anticipatory fear and practise ways to approach injections or medical appointments more calmly. Tell your clinic if needles make you faint or feel unwell so they can plan appropriate support. Follow their injection training and medication instructions throughout.

Can we prepare for egg collection or embryo transfer?

Yes. We can rehearse arriving, communicating with staff and using calming cues during appropriate parts of the appointment. Your clinic can explain the procedure, sedation and practical arrangements. Hypnosis does not replace pain relief or clinical instructions, and you should remain able to respond to staff.

What is hypnosis for the two-week wait?

This means using hypnosis and relaxation to support coping while waiting for a pregnancy test after ovulation or treatment. Sessions may focus on repetitive symptom-checking, difficulty resting and worry about the result. The aim is a more manageable wait, not influencing implantation or predicting the outcome.

Can I listen to my recording after embryo transfer?

Ask your fertility team about any practical concerns and follow their aftercare advice. A relaxation recording can be used as emotional support when it is comfortable and safe to do so. You do not need to listen perfectly or believe that missing it will affect the treatment outcome.

Can hypnotherapy support me after an unsuccessful IVF cycle?

You can enquire after an unsuccessful cycle, whether you are considering more treatment, taking a break or unsure what comes next. Sessions can support coping with disappointment and self-blame. Specialist fertility counselling is another useful option, and your clinic can explain the support available.

Do I have to keep trying to conceive to receive support?

No. You can seek emotional support while pausing treatment, deciding to stop or adjusting to an unexpected future. The work follows your priorities and does not pressure you towards further treatment. Decisions about fertility care remain yours, informed by your medical team.

Pregnancy anxiety, loss and fear of birth

Can hypnotherapy help with anxiety in pregnancy?

Hypnotherapy can support work on anxious expectations, tension and coping during pregnancy. We agree goals and adapt exercises to your comfort and care needs. If anxiety is persistent, intense or affecting daily life, tell your midwife or GP so you can access appropriate perinatal support alongside any hypnotherapy.

Can I have support during pregnancy after miscarriage or baby loss?

Yes. A subsequent pregnancy can bring both hope and fear. Sessions can focus on feeling steadier between appointments and responding kindly to yourself. You do not have to retell a loss in detail. Your maternity team and specialist bereavement services can also help you find suitable support.

Can we work on anxiety before scans or test results?

Yes. We can rehearse attending appointments, asking questions and managing the waiting period. Techniques can include grounding, comfortable breathing and shifting attention away from repetitive checking. They support coping with uncertainty rather than offering reassurance about a result that only your clinical team can assess.

What is tokophobia?

Tokophobia is an intense fear of childbirth and sometimes pregnancy. It may relate to a previous experience or occur before a first pregnancy. If fear is severe, speak to your GP or midwife about specialist perinatal mental health support. You deserve help and a chance to discuss your birth options.

Can I seek help for fear of childbirth before I am pregnant?

Yes. You can discuss birth-related fears before pregnancy, including worries that affect decisions about having children. Sessions can support work on anxiety and confidence in seeking information. A GP can also help you access specialist advice if the fear is intense or persistent.

Can hypnotherapy support me after a difficult previous birth?

Sessions can focus on present-day anxiety, a sense of lost control and preparing for future care at a manageable pace. You do not have to relive the experience. Flashbacks, nightmares or severe distress should also be discussed with your GP or maternity team so specialist trauma support can be considered.

Do I need to describe a traumatic birth in detail?

No. You can choose what to share, and we can begin with your current needs and goals. You can pause or decline an exercise. Hypnosis is not used to recover hidden memories, establish what happened or pressure you into revisiting distressing events.

Can hypnotherapy replace my midwife or perinatal mental health care?

No. Hypnotherapy is emotional support alongside appropriate maternity and mental health care. Keep your appointments and discuss treatment decisions with your clinical team. If you have a physical concern such as bleeding or reduced baby movements, contact your maternity unit promptly rather than using relaxation to wait it out.

Hypnotherapy for birth uses individual sessions to work on worry, confidence and preparation for labour or a planned birth. Techniques may include relaxation, imagery and rehearsing how to express preferences. The aim is to feel more prepared while remaining flexible about the medical care you and your baby may need.

Is this the same as a hypnobirthing course?

There is overlap in skills such as relaxation, breathing and visualisation. These sessions are individual hypnotherapy tailored to your fears and goals, rather than a complete antenatal education course. Antenatal classes and your maternity team remain important sources of practical information about labour, feeding and caring for your baby.

When should I start hypnotherapy for birth?

Starting a few months before your due date gives you time to practise and become familiar with the techniques. You can also enquire later in pregnancy. We discuss the time available, your main concerns and a realistic plan; there is no requirement to reach a particular week before asking.

Can I use birth hypnosis if I want an epidural?

Yes. Relaxation and confidence work can sit alongside your chosen pain relief, including an epidural. Needing or choosing medication is not a failure. Discuss options with your maternity team and feel free to change your preferences as labour unfolds.

Can hypnotherapy help me prepare for an induction or caesarean?

You can use sessions to work on anxiety and preparation for an induction or planned caesarean. We can rehearse communicating with staff and coping with unfamiliar surroundings. Your maternity team explains the procedures and medical options; hypnosis supports your emotional preparation.

Does hypnobirthing guarantee a painless or intervention-free birth?

No. Birth experiences vary, and no preparation method can guarantee how labour will feel or unfold. The aim is to build coping skills, confidence and flexibility. A change of plan, pain relief or medical intervention does not mean you have done anything wrong.

Can my birth partner learn ways to support me?

You can share agreed calming cues, recordings or preferences with your birth partner. They may help by offering reassurance and reminding you of techniques you find useful. If you want a partner involved in an appointment, contact me beforehand to discuss the format.

What if I cannot relax or my birth plan changes?

You do not need to feel calm all the time. We can practise returning to a simple anchor, asking for explanations and taking one step at a time. Techniques are tools you can use when helpful, not rules you have to follow or a measure of a successful birth.

London appointments, recordings and choosing support

Can I have fertility or birth hypnotherapy online?

Yes. Individual appointments are available by Zoom, which may be convenient around treatment or pregnancy. Choose a private, comfortable place where you can hear clearly and will not be interrupted. We discuss your needs and whether online appointments are suitable before starting.

How much does fertility and birth hypnotherapy cost?

Standard individual sessions cost £198 per session, including VAT, and last approximately 50 minutes. Your first appointment includes hypnosis as well as the consultation. Appointments are available in the City of London and online; the fees page has full booking information.

What happens at the first appointment?

We discuss your situation, any medical or psychological care, and what you would like help with. I explain the approach, answer questions and agree suitable goals with you. The first appointment includes hypnosis tailored to your needs, with time to consider how you found the experience.

How many sessions will I need?

The number depends on your goals, circumstances and how you respond. Some people want support around a particular appointment; others prefer work across treatment or pregnancy. We discuss a plan and review progress together rather than promising a fixed number or a particular outcome.

Will I receive a personalised hypnosis recording?

Yes. You receive a personalised recording of your session to practise with between appointments. We discuss when and how to use it comfortably. Listen only where it is safe to relax, never while driving, and follow your clinical team’s instructions during treatment or labour.

How do I choose the best fertility or birth hypnotherapist for me?

There is no single best practitioner for everyone. Look for recognised qualifications, an approach that respects medical care and someone you feel comfortable talking to. Susannah holds the HPD and SQHP qualifications and has practised since 2003. Try the free relaxation audio to hear her voice, or contact her to discuss your needs.
