What hypnotherapy for health anxiety can help with

Health anxiety can take up hours of the day and leave you feeling exhausted. Hypnotherapy for health anxiety can help with:

  • constant worry about your health
  • checking your body for lumps, changes or symptoms
  • searching your symptoms online
  • seeking reassurance from doctors, family or friends
  • fear of a serious illness, such as cancer or heart disease
  • physical symptoms of anxiety, such as a racing heart or tingling
  • avoiding doctors, hospitals or health news
  • worry about the health of loved ones

It aims to help you feel calmer and more at ease in your body.

How hypnotherapy for health anxiety works

We begin with your worries, the situations that trigger them and how you would like daily life to change. Together we identify useful goals, such as less time checking, more confidence at appointments or better engagement with work and relationships.

During hypnosis, therapeutic suggestions and imagery help you rehearse responding differently to worry. This can include allowing some uncertainty, shifting attention and continuing with meaningful activities without first needing complete reassurance.

Working with a hypnotherapist for health anxiety

Working with a hypnotherapist for health anxiety starts with an initial consultation. In this first session, we talk about your worries and what you would like to change.

I also explain how anxiety and the subconscious mind affect the body. The first session includes hypnosis, so the work begins straight away.

My approach is solution-focused, so we concentrate on how you want to feel and build on the progress you make.

What happens in a health anxiety hypnotherapy session

Each session begins with a conversation about how you have been and what has changed. We review your goals before using hypnosis tailored to your needs.

You receive a personalised recording for agreed practice between sessions. It is a tool, not something you must repeat until you feel safe. We adapt the plan if listening starts to become another reassurance habit. Only listen somewhere safe to relax, never while driving.

My appointment with susannah has gone very very well, I have now been off the weed habit for over a month now, she has taken away my want to smoke it and some of the issues that go with it when you stop smoking it, I cannot thank this lady enough for giving me a new start, the voice notes that you will get after your appointment help so much, I listen to them every night before bed, now I only need to listen to them every now and then, not once have I wanted to go and get some (w) and it is all down to the appointment I had with susannah, highly recommend if you have the problem that I had, tried to give up myself but always gave in to it, I have a new life now and getting a lot done, sleeping is good and have saved a lot of money not smoking it, thinking more clearly now too, I’m so please as it’s been a habit of mine for many many years, I couldn’t have done this without her help and I’m so grateful, she is there if you need extra help too x

I’ve been working with Susannah for several months to work on my insomnia issues. After a few sessions we discovered I was also mildly depressed and we have been working together to try and fix the issues I was experiencing. In just 6 weeks I’ve gone from a fragment of myself to an inspired, vibrant person again and I’m so thrilled with the results. Susannah’s hypnotherapy sessions are beautiful and she really works with you to become better. Highly recommend her to anyone!

Highly recommended. It is very easy to communicate with Susannah and Susannah transmits positive vibes. Clearly Susannah focus is the well being of her patients. I gave up vaping in one session, no craving and no need to substitute by something else. This helps me to open a new chapter in my life without the servitude of smoking/vaping. 100% success as far as I am concerned. Would turn to Susannah again for what ever my needs are in the future.

I have been on quite the journey with Susannah. For so many years so many aspects of my life seemed to be causing me anxiety and anger, making me too exhausted to complete simple, everyday tasks, that seemed straightforward to other people. I couldn’t imagine things would improve without months of therapy at least. Working with Susannah however made me understand that it was my perception of my life rather than the events of my life that needed addressing, and this made finding solutions so much more manageable. Right from the first session things started to improve, and as it turned out, in total I needed only five sessions.Susannah has a gift for explaining complex functions of the brain in a super-accessible way, so that I now both understand what was going wrong and have developed strategies to support me in preventing the build-up of stress and anxiety in the future. I cannot think of an area of my life that has not been positively impacted by my time with Susannah and cannot recommend her highly enough.

I would like to start my review with thanking Susannah. I was sceptical, but went in with an open mind. I had one session of hypnosis to help quit smoking. I was a person that could stop and start but I wanted to quit for good. My session was at the beginning of Feb and so far so good. I feel a lot better health wise also helped motivate me to consistently go to the gym and generally take better care of myself. If your thinking about doing it, go for it, best decision I’ve made.

I got in touch with Susannah after yet another flight that made me feel sick and traumatised. Living overseas is great until you begin to have a fear or flying which impacts your ability to travel with your husband and also for work. Since spending time with Susannah i have been able to fly a total of 4 times in the last 2 weeks and havent gotten upset or fearful like i used too once – im now able to fly and the worst thing that happens is i get bored!! 🙂 I cant thank Susannah enough for helping me with this fear! Also, and i think no coincidence, i am far calmer in my day to day life. I absolutely never thought id be able to get off of a plane and go in to the office, instead of needing a sleep and a drink to get through it!!! Absolutely changed my life – long may it continue.

I’m a 33yo woman. I’ve struggled most of my life with low mood/depression and anxiety. I came to Susannah looking for help in changing my unhealthy habits and mindset. I can’t even tell you exactly what has changed since my 3 hypnotherapy sessions, only that something in me has shifted, I feel better, more content, positive and lighter and I’m making better choices. After the first session it felt like something in my brain moved, for the better. I was really sceptical going in to this, especially as the sessions were online, but it worked. Would definitely recommend Susannah, the sessions aren’t cheap but was worth every penny to me.

Can’t recommend Susannah enough! 3 months down and I’ve not touched a vape Or even thought about it. I will be honest, I was sceptical about hypno previously but it’s been such a great experience. My life has changed so positively since that session.

I recently had 3 sessions of hypnotherapy with Susannah to help with a fear of flying that had been causing me anxiety, and tainting my experience of travel and holidays for many years. This was my first experience of hypnotherapy, and it was an extremely positive and beneficial one, as I have since been on multiple flights without that old anxiety, and free of the accompanying tension and fear. This is entirely down to Susannah’s calming, patient manner and extremely insightful techniques. I can’t recommend her services highly enough. Thank you so so much Susannah!

What is health anxiety?

Health anxiety, sometimes called hypochondria, is when worry about being ill or becoming ill starts to take over your life. Medical reassurance may bring brief relief before the worry returns or moves to another sensation.

Health anxiety and OCD can share patterns of checking and reassurance seeking. Sessions focus on how you respond to worry, helping you make more room for daily life while keeping appropriate medical care in place.

Read more about support alongside OCD care.

Health anxiety hypnotherapy and your GP

If you have new or changing symptoms, get appropriate advice from your GP or healthcare team. Hypnotherapy works alongside medical care; sessions do not diagnose symptoms or ask you to ignore them.

Your GP can also help with health anxiety itself, including talking therapy such as CBT. In England, adults can self-refer to NHS Talking Therapies. We discuss current care so our work fits your wider support.

Signs of health anxiety

Common signs of health anxiety include:

  • worrying a lot about your health
  • frequently checking your body for signs of illness
  • asking others for reassurance
  • worrying that doctors or tests have missed something
  • spending a long time reading about symptoms online
  • avoiding anything to do with serious illness, such as medical TV programmes
  • noticing normal sensations and fearing the worst

Any of these can be a reason to seek support.

The health anxiety cycle

A worrying sensation, thought or health story can trigger anxiety. Checking or seeking reassurance may offer relief, but another doubt can soon bring the worry back.

Sessions help you recognise this pattern and practise a more flexible response. The goal is not to prove that nothing could ever go wrong, but to cope with uncertainty and return attention to your day.

Hypnosis for body checking and reassurance seeking

Repeatedly taking your pulse, examining the same area or asking others whether you are all right can become exhausting. The relief may fade quickly and prompt another check.

Hypnosis can help you rehearse a different response to the urge and build confidence with uncertainty. We distinguish anxiety-driven repetition from screening or monitoring recommended by your clinician.

Hypnotherapy for googling symptoms

Searching your symptoms online often leads to the most frightening explanation. One search can turn into hours of reading, leaving you more anxious than before. This is sometimes called cyberchondria.

Hypnotherapy for googling symptoms aims to calm the urge to search, so you can feel more settled and in control.

When anxiety feels like illness

Anxiety can bring real physical sensations and make you more watchful of changes in your body. Paying close attention to a sensation may make it feel more prominent or frightening.

A sensation alone cannot tell you whether anxiety is its cause. With appropriate medical advice in place, sessions can focus on the stress, interpretation and repeated monitoring around it.

Hypnotherapy for fear of serious illness

For many people, health anxiety centres on one illness, such as cancer, heart disease, MS or dementia. A news story, a friend's diagnosis or a family history can make the fear feel very close.

Hypnotherapy for fear of serious illness aims to calm this fear at a subconscious level, so you can feel calmer and enjoy the present.

Hypnosis for health anxiety about loved ones

Health anxiety can also focus on others, such as your children, partner or parents. Every cough or temperature can feel like the start of something serious.

Hypnosis for health anxiety about loved ones aims to calm this worry, so you can care for the people you love with a calmer mind.

Hypnotherapy for health anxiety after a health scare

Health worries can grow after an illness, bereavement or difficult medical experience. Even when the immediate situation has changed, you may find yourself watching closely for another problem.

We can work on the emotional impact and confidence in coping with the present. The pace is agreed with you and respects any ongoing medical or psychological care.

How health anxiety affects daily life

Health anxiety can take up hours each day and make it hard to concentrate or sleep. Some people avoid doctors altogether, while others visit often and still feel unsure.

It can affect relationships, as loved ones are asked for reassurance again and again. Many people also feel embarrassed, which can make the worry harder to talk about.

Read more about hypnotherapy for sleep difficulties.

Who health anxiety hypnotherapy can help

Health anxiety hypnotherapy can help many different people, including:

  • people who constantly worry about their health
  • those who check their body or search symptoms online
  • people whose anxiety began after a health scare or illness
  • those with a family history of illness who fear the same
  • parents who worry about their children's health
  • people who feel anxious before medical appointments or test results
  • anyone whose health worries are affecting work, sleep or relationships

It can help whether your health anxiety started recently or has been with you for years.

The beliefs behind health anxiety

Thoughts such as “if I stop worrying, I’ll miss something” or “I won’t cope if I’m ill” can make checking feel necessary. Repeatedly debating those thoughts may keep you searching for certainty.

We explore more flexible expectations and rehearse coping responses. You can care for your health without needing to settle every possible doubt before enjoying the present.

Health anxiety, hypnosis and the subconscious mind

The word subconscious can describe familiar expectations and responses that happen with little deliberate thought. A sensation may quickly become linked with a frightening interpretation, even when you are trying to think differently.

Hypnosis uses focused attention, imagery and tailored suggestions to practise more helpful responses. We work with present patterns rather than assuming there is one hidden cause or using hypnosis to recover supposedly forgotten memories.

What health anxiety hypnosis feels like

Hypnosis is a natural, relaxed state, similar to daydreaming or the moment before sleep. You stay aware of what is happening and in control throughout.

Health anxiety hypnosis is a clinical process, very different from stage hypnosis. Sessions are non-judgemental, and you may notice your body relax as the session goes on.

Techniques used in health anxiety hypnotherapy

Sessions are tailored to you and can include:

  • focused attention and imagery to support coping
  • suggestions for more flexible responses to uncertainty
  • exploring self-critical or catastrophic thinking
  • practising alternatives to repeated searching and checking
  • rehearsing medical appointments and asking useful questions
  • building confidence after a health scare
  • agreed self-hypnosis practice between appointments

We choose a comfortable focus. You do not need to scan your body, relive a frightening experience or feel perfectly calm before taking a useful step.

Is hypnotherapy for health anxiety right for you?

You can enquire if health worries, checking or searching are taking up too much of your life, with or without a formal diagnosis. We discuss your needs, existing care and preferences before starting.

We agree manageable goals and review whether sessions are helping. Where assessment or specialist treatment is needed, that remains part of an appropriate care plan.

Choosing a hypnotherapist for health anxiety

When choosing a hypnotherapist for health anxiety, look for recognised qualifications and experience of working with anxiety. It also helps to feel comfortable with the person you choose, and an initial consultation is a good chance to ask questions.

I hold the SQHP and HPD qualifications and have been practising as a clinical hypnotherapist since 2003.

The benefits of hypnotherapy for health anxiety

Hypnotherapy for health anxiety aims to help you feel calmer and more at ease in your body. Benefits can include:

  • feeling calmer about your health
  • trusting your body again
  • more control over the urge to check or search
  • seeing symptoms in proportion
  • more time and energy for the things you enjoy
  • better sleep
  • feeling more relaxed at medical appointments
  • enjoying life in the present

If you would like help with health anxiety, contact me to find out more or book your initial consultation.

Research on hypnosis and anxiety

A 2019 meta-analysis by Valentine and colleagues reviewed 15 studies containing 17 trials and found benefits from hypnosis for reducing anxiety. Effects were stronger when hypnosis was combined with other psychological approaches. These findings support an anxiety-management focus in individual sessions.

The NHS guide to health anxiety explains the checking and reassurance cycle and describes support including CBT. Understanding that cycle helps us set practical goals alongside appropriate healthcare, such as spending less time seeking certainty and more time on everyday life.

Health anxiety hypnotherapy: frequently asked questions

Answers about health worries, body checking, online searching, hypnosis and appointments in London or online.

Understanding health anxiety

What is health anxiety?

Health anxiety is persistent worry about having or developing an illness that starts to dominate everyday life. You might repeatedly check your body, search for symptoms or ask for reassurance, yet struggle to feel settled. Support focuses on changing your relationship with these worries while keeping appropriate medical care in place.

Is health anxiety the same as hypochondria?

Hypochondria is an older term often used for health anxiety. Many people find it dismissive because the distress and physical sensations they experience are real. I use health anxiety to describe the pattern of fear, checking and uncertainty, and approach it with understanding rather than judgement.

What are common signs of health anxiety?

Common patterns include spending a lot of time thinking about illness, repeatedly checking sensations, searching online, seeking reassurance or avoiding health information. You may find that relief after a medical appointment does not last. The amount of time, distress and disruption matters more than any single behaviour.

Can health anxiety happen alongside a real medical condition?

Yes. A diagnosed condition and persistent health worries can coexist. Hypnotherapy can focus on distress, uncertainty and coping without questioning your diagnosis or care. We distinguish agreed medical monitoring from additional checking driven by anxiety, and work in a way that respects the advice of your healthcare team.

Is health anxiety related to OCD?

Health anxiety and OCD can overlap in their patterns of repeated checking, reassurance seeking and difficulty with uncertainty. They are not interchangeable diagnoses. If you think you have OCD, an appropriate assessment can guide care. Hypnotherapy support can fit alongside your existing psychological treatment rather than adding another reassurance ritual.

Why does reassurance about my health only help briefly?

Reassurance may ease worry for a short time, but another doubt or sensation can restart the cycle. Repeating the search for certainty can make it harder to tolerate uncertainty. Sessions explore how to respond differently to that urge, while maintaining a sensible plan for medical concerns.

Can health anxiety begin after illness or bereavement?

A health scare, illness, loss or difficult medical experience can make health feel less predictable. Some people become more watchful afterwards. We can discuss how those experiences affect you now and build coping skills at a comfortable pace. You do not have to repeatedly relive an upsetting event.

How is health anxiety different from sensible concern about symptoms?

Sensible concern usually leads to an appropriate action and a plan. Health anxiety can involve repeated checking or fear that keeps returning despite following that plan. The distinction is not a way to diagnose symptoms yourself. Discuss new or changing symptoms with a clinician and seek support for persistent worry.

Hypnotherapy and the health worry cycle

Can hypnotherapy help with health anxiety?

Hypnotherapy can support people with the anxiety, habitual responses and distress around health worries. Sessions use therapeutic conversation, focused attention, imagery and tailored suggestions to practise more flexible responses. We agree individual goals, such as spending less time searching and more time living, alongside appropriate medical or psychological care.

How does hypnosis for health anxiety work?

We explore what happens when a health worry appears and what you do next. During hypnosis, you practise responses such as allowing uncertainty, shifting attention and continuing with meaningful activities. Suggestions are tailored to your situation. Progress means greater choice in everyday life, rather than having to feel completely certain.

What do you mean by the subconscious in health anxiety?

I use subconscious to describe learned expectations and responses that can happen before you deliberately think them through. For example, a sensation may immediately trigger a frightening interpretation. Hypnosis provides a focused setting for practising alternatives; it does not reveal a hidden diagnosis or prove that a physical symptom is psychological.

What does health anxiety hypnosis feel like?

Hypnosis often feels like focused attention or comfortable absorption. Some people feel deeply relaxed; others remain aware of their surroundings. You do not need to empty your mind or experience a special sensation. We discuss your preferences and adapt the session so that you can participate comfortably.

Do I have to relax perfectly for hypnosis to work?

No. Trying to check whether you are relaxed enough can itself become frustrating. We can work with a busy mind or some discomfort and choose an external point of focus if that suits you. The purpose is to practise a useful response, not achieve a perfect internal state.

Does hypnosis stop all thoughts about illness?

The goal is a different response to health thoughts, rather than guaranteeing they never occur. You can learn to notice a worry without giving it the whole day or immediately seeking certainty. We focus on what you can do when thoughts appear and how life becomes less restricted.

What research supports hypnosis for anxiety?

A 2019 meta-analysis by Valentine and colleagues reviewed 15 studies containing 17 trials and found benefits from hypnosis for reducing anxiety. Effects were stronger when hypnosis accompanied other psychological approaches. This supports an anxiety-management focus; the research section links to the study so you can read its findings and scope.

Can hypnotherapy complement CBT for health anxiety?

Yes, where it fits your treatment plan. CBT is a recognised treatment for health anxiety. Additional hypnosis work can focus on coping, stress and practising agreed responses. Let me know about current therapy so our work supports it and does not introduce conflicting advice or new checking routines.

Checking, searching and everyday situations

Can hypnosis help me stop googling symptoms?

Sessions can help you explore the urge to search and practise a different response when worry appears. We distinguish useful information from repeated searches that keep you stuck. Goals are agreed gradually and fit with medical advice, so reducing compulsive searching does not mean ignoring a genuine need for care.

What is cyberchondria?

Cyberchondria describes health anxiety that becomes caught up in repeated online searching. Looking for reassurance can expose you to alarming explanations and lead to further searches. Support focuses on the pattern and its impact, helping you use information more deliberately rather than chasing a level of certainty the internet cannot provide.

Can hypnotherapy help with repeated body checking?

We can work on the anxiety and automatic urge behind repeated checking, such as repeatedly inspecting the same area or monitoring a sensation. Changes should respect screening advice and any monitoring prescribed by your clinician. The aim is to reduce anxiety-driven repetition while keeping appropriate healthcare habits.

Can hypnosis help with reassurance seeking from family?

Sessions can explore what happens before you ask for reassurance and help you practise tolerating the uncomfortable moment without immediately repeating the question. Loved ones can offer warmth and support without continually debating whether you are ill. We agree changes sensitively, rather than withdrawing support or demanding an abrupt stop.

Can health anxiety make physical sensations feel stronger?

Anxiety and increased attention can make sensations feel more noticeable or alarming. This does not tell you what is causing a particular symptom. Once appropriate medical advice is in place, therapy can help with anxious interpretation and repeated monitoring, making more room for activities beyond watching your body.

Can you help with fear of cancer or heart disease?

You can discuss persistent fears about serious illness in sessions. The focus is the distress, uncertainty and checking around the fear, not providing medical reassurance that an illness is impossible. We work alongside appropriate assessment and screening, with goals such as returning attention to daily life and meaningful plans.

Can hypnotherapy help with anxiety while waiting for test results?

It can support coping during the uncertainty of waiting. We can practise settling into ordinary activities, preparing questions and responding to frightening predictions without repeatedly analysing them. Hypnosis cannot predict the result. Keep agreed follow-up arrangements and contact your healthcare team if you need clarification about the next step.

Can hypnosis help if I avoid doctors or hospitals?

We can explore the fears around appointments and rehearse manageable steps such as making a call, explaining concerns or attending with support. The work is paced to your needs and complements practical arrangements with the clinic. It should help you access appropriate care, rather than delay an appointment you need.

Personal circumstances and appropriate care

Can I have support for worries about a loved one’s health?

Yes. Sessions can focus on your anxiety about a partner, parent or child, and how it affects your own life. We work on coping with uncertainty and responding thoughtfully. Hypnosis does not assess another person’s health; their symptoms and care decisions still need appropriate medical attention.

Can health anxiety hypnotherapy help after a health scare?

We can work on the worry and heightened watchfulness that remain after a difficult experience. Sessions may include calming imagery, confidence building and rehearsal of everyday situations. The pace is agreed with you, and any continuing medical care remains part of the picture. You do not need to force yourself to forget what happened.

Can health anxiety affect sleep and concentration?

Persistent worry and checking can make it difficult to settle at night or stay engaged during the day. Sessions can address the routines and expectations around those moments, alongside stress management. If sleep problems persist or change significantly, discuss them with your GP so relevant causes and care can be considered.

Can I have hypnotherapy without a formal health anxiety diagnosis?

You can enquire without a diagnosis. We discuss the pattern of your worries, how they affect your life and any healthcare you are receiving. Where assessment would be helpful, I will encourage it. The initial conversation helps us decide whether this form of support fits your needs and goals.

Should I see my GP before starting health anxiety hypnotherapy?

Speak to your GP about new, changing or unexplained symptoms and follow any recommended investigations. You can also ask for help with persistent health worry itself. Hypnotherapy works alongside that care. We discuss your situation before beginning and avoid assuming that an unassessed symptom is simply caused by anxiety.

How do I reduce checking without ignoring my health?

An agreed healthcare plan helps separate appropriate action from repeated checking for reassurance. Follow your clinician’s advice on monitoring, screening and when to seek help. Therapy can then focus on the extra checking that anxiety adds. We do not set a blanket rule against appointments or noticing changes.

Can I continue prescribed medication during hypnotherapy?

Yes, you can discuss hypnotherapy alongside prescribed treatment. Tell me about relevant medication and care so sessions can be adapted appropriately. Decisions about starting, stopping or changing a medicine belong with your prescriber. Hypnosis sessions do not require you to stop medication or change a dose.

What if relaxation recordings become another reassurance habit?

We can review how you use them. A recording is a practice tool, not something you must repeat until you feel safe or certain. If listening becomes compulsory or interferes with other therapy, we adapt the plan. You can make progress without achieving complete calm before continuing your day.

London and online appointments

Where can I have health anxiety hypnotherapy in London?

Susannah Saunders offers appointments at City Hypnotherapy Centre, Longcroft House, 2–8 Victoria Avenue, London EC2M 4NS, a short walk from Liverpool Street station. Sessions are individual and tailored to your concerns. Online appointments by Zoom are also available if that suits your location or routine.

Can I have health anxiety hypnotherapy online?

Yes. Individual sessions are available by Zoom. Choose a private, comfortable place where you can hear clearly and will not be interrupted. We discuss your needs and suitability before starting. Online work uses the same personal conversation and tailored hypnosis approach, adapted to the practicalities of meeting remotely.

How much does health anxiety hypnotherapy cost?

Sessions cost £198 each, including VAT, and last approximately 50 minutes. Your first appointment includes hypnosis as well as the consultation. You can choose an appointment in the City of London or online by Zoom. The fees and appointments page contains full booking information.

What happens at my first health anxiety appointment?

We discuss your worries, the situations that trigger them, any current care and what you would like to change. I explain the approach and answer your questions. Your first appointment includes hypnosis, with goals tailored to you and a chance to discuss manageable practice between sessions.

How many health anxiety hypnotherapy sessions will I need?

The number depends on your circumstances, goals and response. We discuss an initial plan and review changes such as time spent checking, everyday functioning and confidence with uncertainty. There is no fixed number that suits everyone. You can ask about progress and the next steps throughout the work.

Will I receive a personalised hypnosis recording?

Yes. You receive a personalised recording of your session for agreed practice between appointments. We discuss a manageable way to use it without making listening another reassurance ritual. Only listen somewhere safe to relax, never while driving or doing anything that needs your full attention.

How do I choose the best health anxiety hypnotherapist for me?

There is no single best practitioner for everyone. Look for recognised qualifications, a thoughtful approach to healthcare and someone you feel comfortable talking to. Susannah holds the HPD and SQHP qualifications and has practised since 2003. Try the free relaxation audio to hear her voice, or contact her to discuss your needs.
