What hypnotherapy for driving anxiety can help with

Driving anxiety can limit where you go, how you work and how often you see friends and family. Hypnotherapy for driving anxiety can help with:

  • nerves before or during a drive
  • fear of motorways and fast roads
  • panic attacks while driving
  • fear of driving after an accident
  • nerves during driving lessons or your test
  • anxiety as a passenger
  • fear of roundabouts, bridges or tunnels
  • avoiding driving altogether

It aims to help you feel calm, confident and in control on the road.

How hypnotherapy for driving anxiety works

We begin with the situations you find difficult and the journeys you would like to feel comfortable making. Together we explore the worry, physical tension and expectations that build around driving.

In hypnosis, tailored suggestions and mental rehearsal help you practise approaching those situations with calm attention and greater confidence. We can work on self-doubt, frightening predictions and the emotional impact of past experiences, then agree manageable next steps.

Working with a hypnotherapist for driving anxiety

Working with a hypnotherapist for driving anxiety starts with an initial consultation. In this first session, we talk about the driving situations you find hardest and where you would like to be able to drive.

I also explain how anxiety and the subconscious mind affect driving. The first session includes hypnosis, so the work begins straight away.

My approach is solution-focused, so we concentrate on your driving goals and build on the progress you make.

What happens in a driving anxiety hypnotherapy session

Each session after the first starts with a short conversation about what has gone well since we last spoke, including any drives. Most of the session is hypnosis, using the techniques that suit you.

After each session, you receive the personalised recording of that session to listen to before the next one. Always listen somewhere you can relax fully, such as at home, and never while driving.

My appointment with susannah has gone very very well, I have now been off the weed habit for over a month now, she has taken away my want to smoke it and some of the issues that go with it when you stop smoking it, I cannot thank this lady enough for giving me a new start, the voice notes that you will get after your appointment help so much, I listen to them every night before bed, now I only need to listen to them every now and then, not once have I wanted to go and get some (w) and it is all down to the appointment I had with susannah, highly recommend if you have the problem that I had, tried to give up myself but always gave in to it, I have a new life now and getting a lot done, sleeping is good and have saved a lot of money not smoking it, thinking more clearly now too, I’m so please as it’s been a habit of mine for many many years, I couldn’t have done this without her help and I’m so grateful, she is there if you need extra help too x

I’ve been working with Susannah for several months to work on my insomnia issues. After a few sessions we discovered I was also mildly depressed and we have been working together to try and fix the issues I was experiencing. In just 6 weeks I’ve gone from a fragment of myself to an inspired, vibrant person again and I’m so thrilled with the results. Susannah’s hypnotherapy sessions are beautiful and she really works with you to become better. Highly recommend her to anyone!

Highly recommended. It is very easy to communicate with Susannah and Susannah transmits positive vibes. Clearly Susannah focus is the well being of her patients. I gave up vaping in one session, no craving and no need to substitute by something else. This helps me to open a new chapter in my life without the servitude of smoking/vaping. 100% success as far as I am concerned. Would turn to Susannah again for what ever my needs are in the future.

I have been on quite the journey with Susannah. For so many years so many aspects of my life seemed to be causing me anxiety and anger, making me too exhausted to complete simple, everyday tasks, that seemed straightforward to other people. I couldn’t imagine things would improve without months of therapy at least. Working with Susannah however made me understand that it was my perception of my life rather than the events of my life that needed addressing, and this made finding solutions so much more manageable. Right from the first session things started to improve, and as it turned out, in total I needed only five sessions.Susannah has a gift for explaining complex functions of the brain in a super-accessible way, so that I now both understand what was going wrong and have developed strategies to support me in preventing the build-up of stress and anxiety in the future. I cannot think of an area of my life that has not been positively impacted by my time with Susannah and cannot recommend her highly enough.

I would like to start my review with thanking Susannah. I was sceptical, but went in with an open mind. I had one session of hypnosis to help quit smoking. I was a person that could stop and start but I wanted to quit for good. My session was at the beginning of Feb and so far so good. I feel a lot better health wise also helped motivate me to consistently go to the gym and generally take better care of myself. If your thinking about doing it, go for it, best decision I’ve made.

I got in touch with Susannah after yet another flight that made me feel sick and traumatised. Living overseas is great until you begin to have a fear or flying which impacts your ability to travel with your husband and also for work. Since spending time with Susannah i have been able to fly a total of 4 times in the last 2 weeks and havent gotten upset or fearful like i used too once – im now able to fly and the worst thing that happens is i get bored!! 🙂 I cant thank Susannah enough for helping me with this fear! Also, and i think no coincidence, i am far calmer in my day to day life. I absolutely never thought id be able to get off of a plane and go in to the office, instead of needing a sleep and a drink to get through it!!! Absolutely changed my life – long may it continue.

I’m a 33yo woman. I’ve struggled most of my life with low mood/depression and anxiety. I came to Susannah looking for help in changing my unhealthy habits and mindset. I can’t even tell you exactly what has changed since my 3 hypnotherapy sessions, only that something in me has shifted, I feel better, more content, positive and lighter and I’m making better choices. After the first session it felt like something in my brain moved, for the better. I was really sceptical going in to this, especially as the sessions were online, but it worked. Would definitely recommend Susannah, the sessions aren’t cheap but was worth every penny to me.

Can’t recommend Susannah enough! 3 months down and I’ve not touched a vape Or even thought about it. I will be honest, I was sceptical about hypno previously but it’s been such a great experience. My life has changed so positively since that session.

I recently had 3 sessions of hypnotherapy with Susannah to help with a fear of flying that had been causing me anxiety, and tainting my experience of travel and holidays for many years. This was my first experience of hypnotherapy, and it was an extremely positive and beneficial one, as I have since been on multiple flights without that old anxiety, and free of the accompanying tension and fear. This is entirely down to Susannah’s calming, patient manner and extremely insightful techniques. I can’t recommend her services highly enough. Thank you so so much Susannah!

What is driving anxiety?

Driving anxiety is a fear of driving, or of certain driving situations, that affects your daily life. When it is intense, it is sometimes called a driving phobia.

Some people feel anxious every time they get in the car. Others are fine on local roads but dread motorways, long drives or unfamiliar routes. It can affect new drivers and people who have driven for decades.

Read more about hypnotherapy for phobias.

Common driving anxiety triggers

Common triggers include:

  • motorways, dual carriageways and fast traffic
  • lorries passing close by
  • roundabouts and busy junctions
  • bridges, tunnels and high roads
  • driving in the dark or in bad weather
  • unfamiliar routes or city traffic
  • being stuck in traffic with nowhere to pull over
  • having passengers in the car

For many people, the fear centres on feeling trapped or out of control.

Hypnotherapy for fear of motorway driving

Motorways can feel overwhelming when speed, lorries, merging or distance between exits becomes the focus of worry. You may take long detours even when you would prefer a more direct journey.

Hypnotherapy can help you work on those expectations and rehearse approaching motorway driving with greater calm and attention. When practical support would help, a motorway lesson with a qualified instructor offers an opportunity to build experience.

Hypnosis for panic attacks while driving

A panic attack at the wheel can feel frightening. Afterwards, anticipating another episode may make you tense before the journey even begins. Hypnotherapy can focus on that fear of panic and help you rehearse a steadier response to anxious thoughts.

If anxiety affects your ability to drive safely, stop in a safe, lawful place as soon as you can. New or concerning physical symptoms need appropriate medical advice. Hypnosis and relaxation recordings are for use in a safe, stationary setting, never while driving.

Hypnotherapy for fear of driving after an accident

After an accident, even a minor one, it is common to feel shaken and anxious about driving again. You might avoid a particular route, picture the event happening again or find yourself bracing for danger.

We can work on the emotional impact and rebuild confidence at a comfortable pace, without needing to relive the event in detail. Follow medical advice after injury, and speak to your GP about persistent flashbacks or nightmares so any trauma-focused support can be included.

Hypnotherapy for nervous learner drivers

Learning to drive can be daunting, especially if you are starting later in life or have had a bad experience in a lesson. Nerves can make it hard to remember what you have learned, and some people put off lessons for years.

Hypnotherapy for learner drivers aims to help you feel calm and focused in lessons, so you can enjoy the progress you make. It can also help if you feel anxious about stalling or making mistakes in front of other drivers.

Hypnotherapy for driving test nerves

Driving test nerves can make it hard to show what you can do. Shaking hands, a racing mind and fear of failing can lead to mistakes that are out of character. Some people put off booking their test, or feel sick with nerves in the days before it.

Hypnotherapy for driving test nerves aims to help you feel calm and focused on the day. Rehearsing the test in hypnosis can help it feel familiar before you take it.

Hypnosis for passenger anxiety

Some people feel anxious as passengers, gripping the seat, pressing an imaginary brake or watching every movement the driver makes. Long trips and holidays can become stressful before they begin.

Sessions can explore the worry about control and help you rehearse feeling more comfortable with a safe, responsible driver. We can also discuss communicating what helps you feel at ease during a journey.

Hypnotherapy for returning to driving

After a break from driving, whether through moving to a city, illness or losing confidence, getting back behind the wheel can feel daunting.

Hypnotherapy for returning to driving aims to rebuild your confidence, so driving feels familiar again. Some people also find a few refresher lessons helpful alongside it.

How driving anxiety affects daily life

Driving anxiety can shape where you live, where you work and how often you see friends and family. You might rely on others for lifts, take long detours or turn down opportunities.

Many people feel embarrassed, especially if they used to drive with ease. Over time, this can affect confidence well beyond driving.

Read more about hypnotherapy for anxiety.

Who driving anxiety hypnotherapy can help

Driving anxiety hypnotherapy can help many different people, including:

  • people who avoid motorways or fast roads
  • those who have stopped driving altogether
  • people who feel anxious after an accident
  • learner drivers who feel anxious in lessons or before their test
  • nervous passengers
  • people returning to driving after a break
  • those who need to drive for work or family
  • anyone who feels tense or panicky behind the wheel

It can help whether you have been driving for years or have just passed your test.

The beliefs behind driving anxiety

Thoughts such as “I’ll lose control”, “something bad will happen” or “I’m a bad driver” can make a journey feel threatening before it begins. Repeated worry can make these predictions feel increasingly convincing.

During hypnosis we can explore more balanced expectations, practise responding to self-doubt and strengthen confidence in the skills you have developed. Where a skill needs refreshing, driving lessons can support that alongside our work.

Driving anxiety, hypnosis and the subconscious mind

As driving becomes familiar, many learned responses happen with less deliberate effort, while your attention still needs to stay on the road. The word subconscious can describe familiar associations and expectations that arise quickly, such as connecting a motorway with danger.

Hypnosis uses focused attention, imagery and tailored suggestions to practise different responses to those associations. This therapeutic work takes place away from the road and supports the appropriate steps you take towards confident driving.

What driving anxiety hypnosis feels like

Hypnosis is a comfortable state of focused attention in which you can engage with therapeutic suggestions and imagery. Sessions are personal and non-judgemental, and many people find them deeply relaxing.

We use that setting to rehearse confidence and more helpful responses to driving worries. The appointment and any recording practice take place somewhere safe to relax, separate from driving itself.

Techniques used in hypnosis for driving anxiety

Hypnotherapy draws on techniques tailored to your concerns. Sessions can include:

  • therapeutic suggestions for calm, attentive confidence
  • exploring catastrophic predictions and self-doubt
  • sensory imagery and mental rehearsal of journeys
  • working gently with the emotional impact of difficult experiences
  • rehearsing manageable responses to motorway or junction fears
  • confidence building for lessons and driving tests
  • self-hypnosis practice at home between appointments
  • planning suitable steps alongside refresher driving lessons

We choose the techniques and pace that fit your goals. Hypnosis exercises are practised away from the road; driving itself requires your full attention.

Driving anxiety hypnotherapy alongside other support

Hypnotherapy can work alongside refresher lessons or motorway lessons with a qualified instructor. Therapy focuses on anxiety and expectations, while lessons develop practical skills and experience. CBT and other appropriate psychological care can also form part of your support.

If a condition or medication affects your driving, follow your clinician’s advice and check the current DVLA guidance. Your safety and ability to pay attention to the road guide any practice plan.

Is hypnotherapy for driving anxiety right for you?

You can enquire whether you are anxious on certain roads, preparing for a test or hoping to return to driving after a break. We discuss your goals, any relevant health concerns and the support you already have.

The focus is on useful changes in everyday life, with manageable practice between appointments. You might want to feel more confident on local roads, prepare for motorway lessons or enjoy travelling as a passenger again.

Choosing a hypnotherapist for driving anxiety

When choosing a hypnotherapist for driving anxiety, look for recognised qualifications and experience of working with anxiety and phobias. It also helps to feel comfortable with the person you choose, and an initial consultation is a good chance to ask questions.

I hold the SQHP and HPD qualifications and have been practising as a clinical hypnotherapist since 2003.

Read more about support with confidence and self-esteem.

The benefits of hypnotherapy for driving anxiety

Your goals might include:

  • feeling more settled before a journey
  • confidence about motorways and unfamiliar routes
  • less time spent anticipating what could go wrong
  • a calmer, more focused approach to driving lessons
  • approaching a driving test with greater self-belief
  • feeling more comfortable as a passenger
  • more freedom to visit family, travel and take opportunities
  • pride in the steps you take towards greater independence

If you would like help with driving anxiety, contact me to find out more or book your initial consultation.

Research on hypnosis and anxiety

A 2019 meta-analysis by Valentine and colleagues reviewed 15 studies containing 17 trials and found benefits from hypnosis for reducing anxiety. The effects were stronger when hypnosis was combined with other psychological approaches. These findings support the anxiety-management focus of personalised sessions.

The NHS information on phobias lists hypnotherapy among treatment options, alongside talking therapies such as CBT. We draw on an understanding of anxiety and learned fear to shape goals around your own driving concerns.

For practical questions about fitness to drive, see the current GOV.UK guidance on anxiety and driving and ask your doctor if you are unsure how it applies to you.

Driving anxiety hypnotherapy: frequently asked questions

Answers about motorway fears, panic, learner confidence, driving tests, passenger anxiety and appointments in London or online.

Understanding driving anxiety

What is driving anxiety?

Driving anxiety is worry or fear associated with driving, travelling as a passenger or particular road situations. You might feel tense before setting off, avoid certain routes or find that thoughts about what could go wrong dominate a journey. It can affect experienced drivers as well as learners, and support can focus on the situations that matter to you.

Is driving anxiety the same as a driving phobia?

Driving anxiety covers a range of experiences, from occasional nerves to intense fear and avoidance. Driving phobia describes a particularly strong fear that disrupts daily life. You do not need a diagnostic label to discuss help. We start with what happens for you, how it affects your journeys and what you would like to change.

Why have I become anxious about driving after years of confidence?

Driving anxiety can develop after a frightening journey, an accident, a panic episode, a long break or a stressful period in life. Sometimes there is no single obvious starting point. We explore the patterns that keep the worry going now and work towards rebuilding confidence, while any new physical symptoms receive appropriate medical attention.

What are common signs of driving anxiety?

Common experiences include a racing mind, muscle tension, feeling shaky, worrying for days before a journey and taking lengthy detours to avoid certain roads. Some people repeatedly check routes or rely on another driver. Understanding these patterns helps us choose practical therapy goals, such as feeling more comfortable on familiar roads or preparing for a specific journey.

Can I have driving anxiety if I am a capable driver?

Yes. Knowing how to drive and feeling confident about driving are different things. A capable driver may become preoccupied with a feared mistake or a repeat of a frightening experience. Hypnotherapy can focus on that anxiety and self-doubt, while a qualified instructor can help with any skills you would like to refresh.

Why do I feel fine on local roads but anxious on motorways?

Motorways can bring particular concerns about speed, joining traffic, changing lanes or being unable to leave immediately. Familiar local roads may feel more manageable because you know the turns and stopping places. We identify your specific triggers and use therapeutic imagery and rehearsal to practise a steadier response, alongside suitable driving practice.

Can avoiding driving make the fear feel stronger?

Avoiding a feared journey can bring immediate relief, but it may leave you with fewer opportunities to build confidence. Over time, the range of journeys that feel manageable can shrink. Therapy can help you plan small, appropriate steps towards your goals, with a driving instructor involved where road skills or supported practice would help.

Can driving anxiety affect work, family life and independence?

Yes. It can make commuting, school runs, visiting friends and holidays feel complicated, especially when you depend on lifts or take long detours. These everyday effects are useful starting points for therapy. We can focus on the journeys that would make the biggest difference to your freedom, confidence and enjoyment of life.

How driving anxiety hypnotherapy works

How can hypnotherapy help with driving anxiety?

Hypnotherapy combines therapeutic conversation with hypnosis to address the worry, expectations and learned responses associated with driving. Tailored suggestions and imagery can help you rehearse feeling more settled and attentive in situations you find difficult. The work is guided by your goals, such as returning to local driving or feeling more confident about motorways.

How does hypnosis work with subconscious driving fears?

The word subconscious can describe familiar expectations and responses that happen with little deliberate thought. A road or situation may quickly bring up a prediction of danger. In hypnosis, we explore these associations and practise more helpful responses through imagery, suggestion and mental rehearsal, supported by appropriate steps in everyday life.

What techniques do you use for driving anxiety?

Sessions can include tailored therapeutic suggestions, sensory imagery, mental rehearsal of a journey, work on self-critical thinking and confidence building. We may explore the emotional impact of a previous difficult experience without needing to relive it in detail. Any self-hypnosis practice takes place somewhere safe to relax, away from driving.

What does hypnosis for driving anxiety feel like?

Hypnosis usually feels like a comfortable state of focused attention, with time to settle and engage with helpful imagery or suggestions. Some people notice physical relaxation; others remain more aware of their thoughts. Sessions take place in the consulting room or online from a safe, stationary setting, so you can give the work your attention.

Do I need to remember what first caused my fear of driving?

No. We can work with the thoughts, feelings and situations you experience now. If a past event feels relevant, we can discuss its emotional impact at a comfortable pace. There is no need to search for a hidden memory before making progress towards a useful driving goal.

Can you help if I feel embarrassed about being a nervous driver?

Yes. Many people find it difficult to talk about driving fears, particularly when others assume driving should be easy. Sessions provide a non-judgemental space to describe what happens and what you would like to change. We can work on self-criticism as well as the anxiety around particular roads or journeys.

Can online hypnotherapy help with driving anxiety?

Online sessions offer the same opportunity to discuss your goals and take part in personalised hypnosis from home. You need a private, quiet place and a reliable connection. Online appointments can be especially convenient if travelling to London currently feels difficult. You remain in a safe, stationary setting throughout the appointment.

Can hypnotherapy work alongside driving lessons or CBT?

Yes. Hypnotherapy can focus on anxiety, expectations and confidence, while a qualified instructor supports driving skills and on-road practice. CBT can also help people work with fearful thinking and avoidance. We discuss other support you are receiving so the goals and practice we agree fit together sensibly.

Motorways, panic and challenging journeys

Can hypnotherapy help with fear of motorway driving?

Sessions can focus on the specific aspects of motorways that worry you, such as speed, merging, overtaking or distance between exits. During hypnosis, we can rehearse a calmer, more attentive response to those situations. A motorway lesson with a qualified instructor can provide practical support when you are ready for appropriate on-road practice.

Can you help with fear of bridges, tunnels or roundabouts?

Yes. We can explore whether the difficulty relates to height, enclosed spaces, traffic decisions or feeling unable to stop. Understanding the trigger allows the hypnosis and rehearsal to be more personal. Where a manoeuvre or road layout is unfamiliar, a qualified driving instructor can help you build the relevant skills alongside therapy.

Can hypnotherapy help with panic attacks linked to driving?

Hypnotherapy can focus on the fear of panic, catastrophic predictions and the tension that builds before a journey. We can rehearse responding to anxious thoughts in a steadier way and plan suitable steps towards driving goals. New, severe or unexplained physical symptoms should be medically assessed, particularly if they could affect safe driving.

What should I do if I feel panicky while driving?

Road safety comes first. Keep your attention on controlling the vehicle and stop in a safe, lawful place as soon as you can. Once safely parked, take time to settle and assess whether you are fit to continue. Do not use hypnosis recordings, close your eyes or attempt an attention-absorbing exercise while driving. Seek medical advice for new or concerning symptoms.

Can you help with fear of being stuck in traffic?

Yes. Some people worry about feeling trapped, being unable to leave quickly or having a panic attack in a queue. Sessions can address the anticipation and the meaning you attach to these situations. Hypnosis can provide a setting to rehearse more flexible thoughts and coping responses before you practise an appropriate journey.

Can hypnotherapy help with night driving or unfamiliar routes?

We can work on the worry and self-doubt associated with these journeys, including anticipating mistakes or feeling pressured by other drivers. Sensible preparation and appropriate practice remain useful. If visibility, eyesight or a driving skill is part of the difficulty, address that with the relevant professional alongside the confidence work.

Can you help with passenger anxiety?

Yes. Passenger anxiety can involve watching every movement, bracing for danger or feeling uncomfortable without control of the car. Sessions can explore those reactions and help you practise feeling more at ease with a safe, responsible driver. Clear communication about comfort and safe driving is also part of making journeys more manageable.

Can I listen to a hypnosis recording while driving?

Only listen to hypnosis recordings when you are safely settled somewhere you can relax fully, such as at home. Never listen while driving, operating machinery or supervising something that requires your attention. A personalised recording is for practice between appointments; it is not an in-car driving aid.

Learners, driving tests and returning to the road

Can hypnotherapy help nervous learner drivers?

Yes. Sessions can address worrying about mistakes, feeling judged, tension before lessons or difficulty showing what you have learned. Hypnotic rehearsal can help you imagine approaching lessons with greater confidence and focus. Your instructor continues to guide the practical skills and decisions involved in learning to drive safely.

Can hypnotherapy help with driving test nerves?

Hypnotherapy can focus on anticipatory worry, fear of the examiner and the pressure you put on yourself to perform. Rehearsing the experience in hypnosis can help it feel more familiar and manageable. We work on calm attention and responding constructively to small mistakes, alongside the practical preparation you do with your instructor.

How far before my driving test should I book?

Enquire when you know you would like support, ideally with time for appointments and practice before the test. Tell me your test date and what happens when you feel nervous. We can discuss availability and a useful focus for the time you have, including how to use your personalised recording between sessions.

Can you help after repeated driving test failures?

Yes. Repeated attempts can affect confidence and make the next test feel more pressured. We can explore the meaning you have attached to previous results and rehearse a more focused approach. Feedback from your instructor and examiner remains valuable for identifying practical skills to develop alongside managing nerves.

Can hypnotherapy help me return to driving after an accident?

Sessions can support the anxiety and loss of confidence that sometimes follow an accident. We discuss the experience at a comfortable pace and focus on what would help you move forward. Follow medical advice after injury, and speak to your GP about persistent flashbacks or nightmares so any trauma-focused care can be included in your support.

Can you help me drive again after a long break?

Yes. Returning after months or years can bring both anxiety and uncertainty about skills. Hypnotherapy can focus on confidence, expectations and rehearsing manageable steps. Refresher lessons with a qualified instructor can help you become familiar with the car, road conditions and any skills you want to practise before driving independently.

Will I need to drive as part of a hypnotherapy appointment?

Appointments involve conversation and hypnosis in the consulting room or online, rather than driving during the session. We can discuss suitable practice between appointments and whether an instructor would be helpful. Any on-road practice needs to match your skills, licensing requirements and ability to drive safely.

Do I need to tell the DVLA about driving anxiety?

GOV.UK says you must tell the DVLA if you are diagnosed with anxiety and it affects your ability to drive safely. If your driving is not affected, you do not need to tell them on that basis. Ask your doctor if you are unsure and check the current GOV.UK guidance for your licence type.
